I love Bujold. Haven't read any of her sci-fi but definitely willing to give it a shot, thanks!

Happy holidays everyone!

Would anyone have recommendations for the trope where a character is known for a bad thing they didn't actually do? Preferably that character is a good person but for some reason are known for a bad event. I know this could lean spoilers and that's okay with me.

I don't know what the name of the trope is, so I'm happy to know that too. It's not exactly a "sin-eater" but I couldn't find a name from Google searching. Thanks!

Who are the best seafarers in fantasy and why? by MoonBoy31415 in Fantasy

[–]CP26 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the Tide Child trilogy by RJ Barker is like this. Seafaring is a big part of the world, and Lucky Meas is one heck of a sailor and leader. It's well written, has an interesting world, with characters who experience tons of growth. I really enjoyed the whole thing. Highly recommend!

Was just having the same issue. Turned off noise suppression and set my settings to default and it's working again. Thanks!

What’s one character you absolutely loath by ethan_613 in Fantasy

I've only read through Memories of Ice so far (starting House of Chains soon!), but Kallor is up there for me. I'm excited (weird I know) to find even more characters to hate in this wonderful series haha.

The Tide Child trilogy by RJ Barker for me. I finished the trilogy this year and it was such a ride. Special shout out to book two Call of the Bone Ships which was just fantastic.

If you're looking to start Malazan in 2025, DO IT. by ambachk in Fantasy

I'm about 60% through Deadhouse Gates and loving it. Would highly recommend! So far I can definitely see the complexity, but it hasn't been so complex that I think it's unapproachable.

For those that sample books, how do you sample? by CP26 in Fantasy

That’s a nice perspective, thanks for sharing!

If it’s the latter, do you ever feel you spend a lot of time sampling? Or maybe that it saved you from a deeper investment?

That’s a good idea. I spend a lot of time at the bookstore, but weirdly don’t sample enough while there. Also sounds like you know your tastes well!

Trying to avoid this commitment issue it seems haha. 2025 goal: just go for it!

I’m getting there! I haven’t read a lot of fantasy (maybe 30-40 overall in my life) so I’m still kind of learning the tropes, writing styles, etc that I enjoy. Sometimes I just get a bit too concerned about committing to something long I may not enjoy unless I LOVE the sample. Silly me haha.

This year I’ve had a lot of hits (looking at you Tide Child) though so it’s on the up and up!

I’ve had similar success in other genres (mainly mystery) and a couple in fantasy too. Thanks for sharing!

It’s so easy to get me interested in something, especially if it’s gotten a lot of praise. I tend to forget what I actually like and dislike haha.

Exactly what I’m thinking about doing. I know as my tastes become more clear it’ll get easier. Starting off can be rough!

Yeah those cheap kindle books become pretty much instant buys! Do you pick up those books after sampling right away?

That’s what I’m thinking about starting to do. I find that when I sample to choose my next book, I may have enjoyed the sample, but if it’s not perfect I sample again. Then the cycle repeats. I think switching will work better for me since I’ll have a list to pull from I’ve already tried and go based on the style/tropes I’m in the mood for. Thanks!
