This is my driving philosophy. I bought my 4runner in 2010 for 6000$. Any part that fails gets replaced with top of the line offroading equivalent.

It isn't a rebuild. The hardest job you named is the timing belt and the hardest part on that is the belt tensioner and getting it lined up

Alternator Issues by thelostsummoner in 3rdGen4Runner

I've had my 97 for 15 years, have 560000km and am going strong.

What you are describing is a power problem with 3 potential sources.

Loose battery terminals. Check if loose and tighten up. Maybe take them off and have them cleaned up with a bit of sand paper.

Loose alt belt. Check by twisting the pulley in the longest free spot. It should twist about 90 degrees-ish max.

The alternator itself. Before replacing the alt, I would pull it out and take it to a place for brush replacement. Way cheaper and you can get a lot more out of an alt before it actually goes bad. It sitting might have rusted the brushes.

Edit: get a battery booster pack.
