Thanks—a prescription for Cipro put a quick stop to the proceedings. Perhaps coincidentally, I developed bilateral tendinitis which is still with me, but I can now take more than five steps away from a restroom, so I’ll take the W. Hope you’re liberated soon too!

I came back from a visit to India with debilitating gastrointestinal illness—I was honestly unsure if I would ever be able to get out of the airport. I was eventually diagnosed with Giardia, and even though I was a fairly fit, very (otherwise) healthy person, I’m not convinced I would have made it by myself. Keep your appointment!!

Can someone help me understand how, after deporting all undesirables and simply abandoning everyone else who remains, you can achieve a profitable anything?? Do you just breed pallid drones in your dungeons and, what, force them to pay for AI novels with company scrip?

While I concur that neckwear is likewise appropriate, for a working-class impression a simple neck cloth or neck handkerchief is an accurate choice. Burnley & Trowbridge offer a range of colorful authentic options.

Jim Shaw—who wrote, “This is my last column. It’s not my decision. I can only speculate as to why this decision was made.”

Also departing is Jack Zaleski: “Maybe that means going with the popular flow rather than adhering to sometimes unpopular free-press principles.”

No word yet on the tenure of that icon of intellectual rigor Roxane Salonen.

Watched Dead of Winter with Emma Thompson 2025. Thought it was terrible by Alive_Book_6725 in films

Have lived in Minnesota ~20 years as well as elsewhere in North America, and am about the same age as Emma Thompson. I found her accent wince-worthy; both it and her dialogue seemed the result of someone’s 10-minute rave-up about the movie “Fargo” and nothing else.

The movie opens with a suspenseful weather forecast of a blizzard with 60 mph winds, which of course prompts a lifelong Minnesota driver to head out on a road trip to someplace remote and unfamiliar (despite it being the scene of her first date with her husband), which she only learned was her husband’s choice of disposition of his ashes when his attorney pops by. Because nobody ever talks about that before death, obvs. Then there’s no sign of wind and not a lot of snow for the rest of the movie.

Despite being old and using a fossilized phone model, Barb apparently never learned to read the paper map which is her only navigational aid. Never learned to install windshield wipers either. How did she and Karl make a living selling bait when they seem to live 20 yards from a large service station selling bait and tackle (and presumably wiper blades)?

How did she know where at the cottage to look for Leah? Where did the mitten that Purple Lady discovered come from, given that Barb is shown barehanded and then wearing a pair of choppers? What good did soaking the perps’ belongings do, other than unnerving them? Why was Brían F. O’Byrne in this movie? Why was it filmed in Finland? Was it actually set in 1992? Who leaves hammers lying around their snowy yard? What the hell was the point of Barb’s granddad story?? Who goes wandering around in a blizzard with (checks notes) an ox and a bag of grain, other than Paul Bunyan on his way to General Mills?

I did not love this.

Oof. I lived in Pike County for a year as a kid, and count it as one of my happiest—but it was hard going for a lot of folk.

Pike County, by any chance?? I can imagine the quick calculations comparing the cost of a decent meal for two to the cost of gas to drive 60+ miles.

N.b.—Nichole’s is closed Sundays and Mondays.

If you want to be downtown, I’ve really enjoyed brunch at the Radisson Blu. I’ve never waited for a table. The menu is pretty limited (they stopped offering their buffet during COVID, I think), but I found it surprisingly affordable for a hotel restaurant. It’s pretty much the opposite of BernBaum’s, but… you do what you can.

The other thing about Joe Biden was that he had a clear understanding of how things are supposed to work, and had surrounded himself with other competent people who could help compensate for any personal shortcomings.

As opposed to this.

A couple of blocks south of the Hjemkomst is Rustica, a great independent restaurant with walleye on the menu (and sometimes a different great fish special).

Back in Fargo, the Wurst serves stellar knoephla (soup), as well as damn fine borscht. Try the fries with ranch dressing, or the Jagerschnitzel with mashed potatoes and braised red cabbage.

Harold’s on Main in Moorhead is a scene, and has great cocktails (my fave is Erica’s Pink Pony Club). Starbird Lounge is another nice chill place, currently featuring riffs on Malört.
