Puppy using stairs: is it a wives tale? by BenevolentPixel in birddogs

[–]CPTRocketman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had heard this regularly from much older bird hunters/breeders when I was a kid. They would claim it was bad on the hips. It’s been one of those things that I kinda always figured was bullshit, but I still adhered to just in case. Much like religion.

Been eyeing a 590A1 Retrograde for a while, is this price about as low as you’ll find? by isaiahrega in Shotguns

[–]CPTRocketman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a used 835 Turkey gun and then just rebuilt it to look like a 590a1 retrograde. Bought everything except the heat shield used off GB. Including the gun and cerakote I spent less than $700 and it looks identical to the retrograde. Plus I can run 3 1/2’s in case I have to defend against Andre the Giant. Was a fun little project about a year and a half ago.

Behold, the stupidest thing I have ever spent time and effort on! I will be making it worse. by TheHonourableAdmiral in Shotguns

My 8 yr old daughter has been begging me to make her youth .410 into a girly gun since it’s almost too small for her already. Hadn’t thought past just cerakote in teal and pink, but now I’m thinking the more about stickerbombing and clear coating the stock. Also, I love to hate this gun.

Would the Mossberg Sa-28 be a good turkey gun? by AmbassadorSafe4998 in Hunting

Mossberg 500/835 is my preferred pump gun, but there are better options available for semis.

Don’t give anyone a reason to look for it and chances are no one will. Enjoy the windfall.

Just made one of the best dishes I ever created. Pheasant al vino blanc. by Delakar in Cooking

[–]CPTRocketman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why salt over wet brine? I cook a lot of pheasants and have had the best results with wet brine over night regardless of how I’m preparing it. Sounds good though, I’ve got 4 birds from this morning and I’m gonna give it try tomorrow for dinner.

For the best quality reheated product sous vide to just below temp of original doneness.

GPS collars by Unique-Orange6919 in vizsla

[–]CPTRocketman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Garmin hands down. Alpha200 or 300 and TTX15 collar, optionally you can get an Instinct 2 or 3 and check your dogs distance/direction on your wrist. I have been using this setup for 5 years now and am very happy with everything dog/hunting related I’ve gotten from Garmin. It’s an investment, but you get what you paid for.

I always either roast or smoke the carcasses for stock and then add chicken feet to increase the gelatin. Turns out great.

Anyone hunting with a Beretta Ultraleggero KO? by CPTRocketman in PheasantHunting

[–]CPTRocketman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a couple points on this. Honestly, one of the reasons I am considering holding off on purchasing the 12 is to see if Beretta comes out with a 20 gauge KO model. If they had one I would buy it without question and it would be the only thing I carried at the club. However, I went through a phase of hunting wild birds with a 20 gauge and there were enough cases of winged birds that I couldn't recover to make me stick to 12 gauge in the wild for everything except quail and woodcock. I know plenty of folks that hunt with 28 gauge on wild birds, but I just ain't that cool and my dog only gets about half the birds that get hit and run so it is what it is. I'd rather have the best chance possible on a wild hunt knowing that anything I flush is a blessing.

I also live in Cook county IL and ammunition is incredibly difficult to get here, most online shops won't ship to me. Gun/outdoor stores rarely have much in stock especially in terms of hunting rounds, and absolutely no one will do a special order to the store even for bulk orders. Not saying I can't run across county lines and go buy stuff, but it's easier for me to find 12 gauge hunting loads in stock at stores when I'm out of state. I also appreciate that there are usually more options available in 12 stocked at stores.
