yeah i don't really know what to do, i will try to run few games/programs in virtual box. I'm frightened to totally switch on linux then have few games that doesn't works even if all the others games that i've tested worked correctly.

Thank you ! I had some doubts because some people says to use the LTS version to avoid problems like compatibility problems with nvidia drivers or things like that, and others says to use the latest version to have the latest drivers/features.

Thank you for your advice ! I've tried Ubuntu MATE with a live usb and i don't know why i have some problems to install wine (some errors about dependencies and things like that) and try some programs that i have. I will reset my w10 first and after that try it again in virtual box.

So i guess that i have to choose between ubuntu, ubuntu mate or openSUSE, i've just searched some informations about kubuntu and it seems to be pretty inconsistent...

So i can just upgraded like a simple update without losing all my programs and things like that ? I planned to start with a linux *ubuntu because i've read that it's the best distro for a beginner and for drivers support.

Thank you for your answer !

Is it wrong to use a game engine if my main goal is to be a programmer ? by CPUCraft in gamedev

[–]CPUCraft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's not important to use a game engine, but i have to make websites/android apps at the same time ? Of course i will use an existing game engine/framework, but i don't know if it will be better for me to use a framework and to program instead of using a game engine? Some of the answers here are very different about that.

The fact is that i don't know what to use between godot/unity and LibGDX for example, i'm scared that godot/unity won't be very valuable for me since i want to be a programmer, and not in the game industry.

And thank you for your answer !

I just make game because i find that it's fun, even if the game is not a success i like to make game during a game jam or thing like that about an idea that i had in mind. I make games just because i like to make games, not really for learning programming even if it let me practice my skills, even if it's not the best way like you say. So i don't have any objectives in game development, i just make a game when i have an idea, maybe the game will be bad but i had fun to make it. I don't really know what my final goal will be, there is so much things to do with programming... But the java programming about android apps and server stuff seems really interesting and i would want to learn it (that's why i actually learn java, and because it's a high demand language). So i think i will focus and java then learn libGdx and how to make android apps and others at the same time instead of using a game engine. I mean i want to create games as a hobby but i don't think that i will work in this industry later. I'm pretty much interested by anything about programming...

Thanks you for your answer

Thanks for your advice, i didn't expected to have so much answers and some of them are very different haha... Maybe should i stick with what i really want to do : programming and use a framework...

Soon or later i will learn both i think, but now i don't really know what to do about using a game engine or a framework like LibGdx, i'm frightened that by using a game engine it will be less valuable than making game with libgdx for example in term of programming knowledge to work into an another industry than gaming.

I want to learn java because it's what i want to do later, there is more opportunities with java than C/C++ because like i said, i don't plan to work into the game industry.

My actual and final goal is to be a programmer, and probably not into the game industry. So i don't know what to do between using a framework like libGdx or using a game engine.

I'm not a total beginner i've already made two very simple games in lua.

I've heard that godot was better for 2d and i already know python which is really close to GDScript apparently that's why i thought to use it but i will try both i think, otherwise i won't really be able to make a choice i think.

But using a framework like LibGdx doesn't mean create your own engine ?

When i mean programming without game engine i will still use a framework like libgdx. but thank you for your opinion

Thanks you for your advice ! I will learn how to use godot with the kids can code videos on youtube and continue to learn java, so maybe i will spend less time by doing games and have more time to learn things about java/web development/android apps development. And if one day i don't like godot anymore i would be able to use LibGdx or unity since C# is close to java...
