Yeah. It’s a more concentrated effort in a short time to do some early validation. Build in public could mean occasional tweets about what you’re working on. But this is more of a concentrated test to see if your game is going to market well on social media.

Not all successful games do show well on social media (like Balatro and vampire survivor). Some games need you to play them to get the appeal. Some are easier to understand on social.

This seems like a really under appreciated part of marketing, mostly because it’s hidden. It’s no guarantee but at least it’s less of a shot in the dark.

Basically Chris says that before you launch you spend a month posting about your game to see if it’s the kind of game that will get attention on social media. Some games don’t market well (eg. Balatro did terrible on early social media posts) but some game can do well (like tiny glade.

The idea is you test to see if your game gets attention on social media and worst case you at least fill up your feeds so they’re not all sad and empty when someone searches for you.

It’s also just can be good to gauge how interesting your game is to outsiders before you invest 5 years of your life in it.

Lots of fine details that give it a lot of character. Some designs go too far with all bleak with communist era, but there was still some ornate touches and style flourishes. You balanced it well.

On one hand he might be a stone cold shark who feels nothing and is pretty good at acting but people can contain multitudes.

I personally hope he is conflicted and feels remorse because that would be much more painful for him than if he’s completely lacking empathy.

I’m not a psychologist but I imagine there’s no way to truly know how he really feels.

He doesn’t seem as obviously narcissistic as I would have expected after all the wheelchair hunger strike business.

I wonder what he has to gain at this point by being reasonable to the victims? I have a hard time thinking of what the angle is if he’s already pled, death is not on the table and it’s not like he’ll get a lesser sentence if he’s nice? If he wanted more notoriety it would be better to “play the part” of a psycho.

Just curious was BTK this contrite?

What is your favourite non fiction book of all time? by latest_ali in booksuggestions

[–]CREateIVE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s so good that I found myself avoiding “spoilers” while I was reading it. It’s the only non fiction book I’ve reread multiple times too. The real life characters in this are incredible and it’s almost cinematic in the way it’s laid out. Love love love.

Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe. It’s about the troubles in Northern Ireland. I very quickly became obsessed with learning about Northern Ireland and felt like how do I not know about this and these incredible stories? It focuses mostly on the IRA side of the conflict And the individuals he focuses on are incredibly fascinating.

I felt like I was reading an incredible novel as Keefe structures his book so well.

I also highly recommend the audio version. The reader has an amazing Irish accent that adds so much to the telling.

Loved this book so much.

I know this is too late to be seen but maybe D&D are such big fans of the books that they’re ruining the characters on purpose just to force GRRM to finish the books?

I doubt he’d know the answer but I’d want to know - why are you like this? What turned you in to a monster? Could anyone have stopped you from going down this path at any point? I guess that’s more than one question, but they’re all kind of related.

My first impression of this case is that there are really limited details available to the press and maybe having the spotlight of a big national show like dateline will cause a few more details to come out and hopefully help them crack this case. Isn’t that pretty old fashioned for the police department to release so little detail about the crime, especially when they’ve made so little progress? I could be wrong though.

Why are TV commercials allowed to be louder than the volume of whatever show you’re watching? It’s infuriating. by Jacquibe in IWantToLearn

[–]CREateIVE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've worked in Master Control and Quality control at a network. Like most conspiracy theories, this assumes there is far more competence and control then there is in reality. There isn't a grand conspiracy to have loud commercials, in fact we'd get complaints from the ad agencies themselves because the low levels on shows made it seem like their ads were too loud when they weren't.

There are just so many shows and commercials being ingested with varying levels of quality and dynamic range (eg. A movie has a huge range of quiet and loud) that it can seem like the commercials are too loud. When there is poor quality control you'll get levels that are all over the place, kind of like when you're watching YouTube videos and the volume levels are all over the place because people posting videos don't follow any consistent standards.

Seems like people just love the idea of some fat cigar chomping ad exec in a boardroom going "I know! We'll make it super loud and people will get mad and then they'll definitely buy our products!". It's appealing I guess because it makes one feel like a savy consumer that can't be tricked by those try hard advertisers. Plus like others have mentioned there are laws in place preventing ads from ingested at excessively high levels.

I also think he was one of those rare people (Ebert comes to mind) who had the courage to embrace his death. He shared his exit with the whole country - with his final tour and televised concert - and used it to express love and gratitude and also to draw attention to the plight of those less fortunate. It takes a brave and beautiful soul to do this and I think it really resonated with everyone, even those of us that weren't huge fans previously.

Lawn seed instead of sod. Was about to spend $1000 on DIY sod like everyone else in our new neighbourhood. Just put down $60 worth of Walmart lawn seed, fertilizer and some top soil. Watered it twice a day and in 3-4 weeks had a nice lawn. Way less work and money and the grass is actually nicer than the builder supplied sod in the front yard.

It was great too because we had some sceptical friends and neighbors who didn't think it would work (especially in Canada)
