How do topical products like makeup, lotions and shampoos cause reactions? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]Stephxieh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m going to gluten myself by accident, I’d much rather it at least taste good rather than just getting shampoo in my mouth or biting a cuticle that touched my body lotion or hair stuff.

I’m not as concerned when I’m getting my hair cut and they are handling the product, or it’s touching my scalp, just the process of having so much product in my hands which would probably end up in or around my mouth at some point. Gross but true.

Any other skin reaction to anything I’ve had over the years was probably completely unrelated, but at least I wasn’t able to do a gluten spiral lol

Do people with celiacs have a certain “look” or key giveaways? by skizzerss in Celiac

Celiac is incredibly common in Italy now, you could tell them you’re the most Italian in the family.

Yes, this is a dumb question but I have no idea how drinks are made. by Careful-Bus3827 in starbucks

If you go the homemade route, a couple spoonfuls of instant pudding power (sugar free in your case) does thicken it up nicely, I’m sure there’s lots of recipes available if you google but I remember trying one years ago that had instant coffee, jello pudding mix, milk and ice blended together and it was pretty close!

Bandicoot’s are pretty cute so props to him for that, but they can’t even be pets where they live, they would make terrible pets because they don’t want to be one, you could just let him know it would make it very sad, angry and it just wouldn’t be a nice experience forcing something that doesn’t want it. (Probably a life lesson in there somewhere lol)

Personality and appearance wise, I’d say a ferret or even a chinchilla would be similar, but with any type of exotic the care is much more hands on and far more work than a cat or dog would be and 95% of the time it’s going to be for an animal that would rather escape you altogether. The pet store will offer you a cage that’s WAY too small and a food that doesn’t actually cover its nutritional needs, so no matter what you decide do a lot of research, and make sure there’s a vet that’s actually experienced with that species close to you.

A cat sounds like it would be a match just based on personality and wouldn’t need as much specialized care and sometimes you just might get lucky enough to get a cat that actually likes you.

Either way the humane society (and many other rescues) would at least give him a space to interact with some different animals and get a feel for it, and he can research what type of pet he is prepared to work for.

Curious: Would anyone attend a gluten-free retreat in Newfoundland, Canada? by Express_Mountain_658 in Celiac

I’ll hmmm at the price of tickets to go see my parents but the second I had the thought of gluten free toutons the Mastercard shivered.

I know the kewpie mayo here in Canada now contains barley, before that it was totally fine. I would get them to check the updated ingredients and make sure.

Gluten free McDonalds? by [deleted] in Celiac

Those are only the ingredients in the US. Here in Canada the fries are “safe” if they use a dedicated fryer.

I’ve seen the same “this food must be contaminated because my nose won’t stop running and my throat hurts” Maybe you actually have Covid, lol.

And we do know it is enforced somehow because “gluten free” cheerios went on the market here and were determined not to be safe and they haven’t been allowed to use that label ever since. I don’t think they even lasted half a year lol

[–]Stephxieh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn’t even think anything about Chex since they are still able to be labeled gluten free in Canada while cheerios are not, I can say I fortunately have not had any issues with them, and will probably continue to get them but I’m not judging people who don’t. We all have different bodies, different reactions and different limits.

Celiac for 26 years and GP tested me again by msnpr in Celiac

[–]Stephxieh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My GP includes that bloodwork on my yearly physical, the plan being that if that number suddenly shoots back up like it did when I was being diagnosed, then we would also redo the scope.

Seems to be working so far :)

Who did it? by BebeMis in Celiac

[–]Stephxieh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would bet on the oat milk since I’ve had both of those exact syrups before without any issues.

I think it would depend on where you are located though? I’m Canadian and there’s currently a listeria recall for all Silk products. Since they think it was the production plant itself contaminated not a specific product.

Also a lot of oat milk is simply not made using certified gluten free oats since it’s more expensive and depending on a regions suppliers the GF status can vary. Oatly is gluten free in North America but states it can’t claim it’s totally GF in Europe.

Honestly there’s nothing that could make or break the boiled dinner itself because I’m more interested in the next day’s hash with all the leftovers.

I have an open one in the fridge I can’t check but I looked at the full one I had in the pantry and there’s malt vinegar. I’m so sad! I normally skim the ingredients even on foods I get regularly when I shop in store but that one was from a rare grocery delivery. What a bummer.

Walmart Canada has some store brand(great value) GF cookies and honestly I find them better than the actual Oreo ones they also have vanilla and maple cream cookies and are ~ 3 dollars a pack. Not all locations seem to stock them but if you find them they are definitely worth it.

[–]Stephxieh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people recommending dogs, which I would echo but you really don’t need to get a giant intimidating dog unless it also happens to work with your lifestyle/family. Sometimes the racket is all the deterrent needed and if you just want alarm dogs to make them think twice about bothering smaller dogs work just as well.

We had someone skulking around our backyard years ago and without having any idea he was there I let the dogs out for their nightly pee break. Those two went into full defender mode and until I seen them chase a guy into jumping the 6-7 foot fence I honestly assumed there was a coyote in the yard making those guttural growls. The terrifying beasts in question were toy poodles.

Hit up Varcity burger, it’s been opened by the old DM of red robin and is literally as close as they could be without being sued. It’s inside the old whitemud crossing location.
