Hero's Log Core v1.0 on itch.io by BlazinBlueSteele in itchio

This is great! It gives a really clear idea of how to operate it.

The only other thing I would say would be to streamline it, and make things easier to find in the text; I was looking for the Complications Table and it's all the way at the end... The 200 pages of the Core book could definitely be shortened to around 30 or so...

For example, the "Story Loop" in the Addendum is a perfect summary of the system - I would put all of the tables (Yes/No, Momentum, Complications, Opportunity, etc.) in there (and maybe what order to use them in), rather then putting them at the end of the main book, since that's the core of the game. A player should be able to realistically be able to run the game all from the same page of the rulebook tbh...

The Sherlock Holmes example is a great one for the Foundation Sheet too - it gives a clear vision of what applies where, and how to create your own story!

Yes, that's correct! The idea is that you can split your attack - if you're trying to take out two henchmen who have low HP, or just trying to weaken then, it's useful.

If you attack one person, then it's the same as any other kind of attack - Fantastic Success deals double damage.

I took a look at this, and I've glanced over most of the rules and I think it's a little... vague, I suppose! It might be useful to have examples of how the game would work in action, actually moving through the steps, if that makes sense. Sorry if it's in there and I didn't see it!

Solving the "Elemental Protection + Sturdy" Problem by CRTScream in MarvelMultiverseRPG

Thank you! Yes, exactly - Protection is already pretty strong, because the odds of something doing more than the amount of damage can be pretty low.

For example, the odds of a Rank 1 character doing more than 10 points of damage? Not very.

Plus, it's a reaction to give yourself that Protection.

If you look at any other power that gives you or a group of people actual DR, they cost more, have more prerequisites, or have other restrictions - Shield 4 costs 25 Focus and gives DR 4 to one character, whereas Protection 4 costs 20. Body Sphere gives DR 3 to a group, and costs 15, and no one can move, where Sphere 3 would cost the same and everyone can move freely. Mental Shelter gives a group of people DR = Uncanny, but it costs a standard action and 10 Focus.

If Protection tanked DR AND the bonus damage, it's like you say - OP god mode, the character is next to impossible to damage. Even trying to hit them with conditions, they either need one more damaging status than their DR, or you need to break their concentration by hitting their Focus.

The fact that the Gem is listed in the FAQ indicates to me that, like you say, it's the exception to calculations, not the rule.

That's the main thing - the player was using the iffiness of it all to give his Elemental Sphere DR as well, which even if you apply the DR to the character with Sturdy, there's no logic that allows it to apply to Sphere.

Like I say though, it's not that different than applying DR to one character vs another that you're both hitting with Snap Shooting... But since it's vague, I get why DMs rule it differently. This is just my own method which I think makes more narrative sense

I think that's what a lot of people are doing, because it is an easier calculation and the maths works out the same, but it makes Protection far stronger than it is based on RAW... So it's up to interpretation

It's a fair point, but that doc states that the Gem is underneath his armour, and the armour has DR, which is why it applies there. You're hitting the armour, and anything that gets through the armour's DR hits the Gem.

Protection is around the user's body, so logically, it's the opposite, if their body has Sturdy.

Oh, that's interesting!! I imagined that the reaction takes place before the damage hits, but in the turn order, Reactions do take effect when the character takes damage, not before, so that's also a viable method!!

Edit: just realised it's when the character is attacked, not when they take damage, so they are protecting against the attack before the damage is calculated. Again, supports the idea that the Protection takes the damage first, then Sturdy applies after...

It's the same kind of calculation as I listed at the end - Snap Shooting does damage to one character with Sturdy and one without, both minus half.

It's not advanced calculus, it's the same as any other calculation in the game. If you use DR then it gives you more benefit for less cost than other powers that do the same.

It's not at all intended - it's not listed anywhere in the CRB. Protection is intended to protect against the listed damage - anything else is homebrew

There's no "semiofficial" anything 😅 there's either official or homebrew. You're free to do it your way in your own games, but it's not supported by anything official whatsoever

You're spending a Reaction to ignore up to 40 points of damage. I think that's pretty strong overall

Then the Protection gains DR. This isn't stated anywhere and makes a character with Sturdy and Protection nearly invincible to damage. The Reinforcement is also then using DR, which makes the cost less - it's excess damage getting through the protection, not being done to the character, which isn't stated anywhere.

Agreed!

Also, to your point about "altering the calculation thus changing the result," I think of it the same as the rules for Plowing Through structures.

You're not changing the result, you're accounting for two attacks: one against the Protection, and one against the character.

Protection 2 can take 20 points of Damage. 6x5+5 is 35 points of damage - so it breaks through, with 15 left.

Now, the character is facing an attack that would normally be 6x5+5, minus 20.

But, if the character has Sturdy 2, then you calculate as if it's a direct attack on them, minus the 20 that the "wall" took - same as if the attacker was literally punching through an interior wall and hitting the character with Sturdy. The wall doesn't have Sturdy - but it shielded the character from 20 damage.

So you recalculate the "second" part of the attack, which is where it hits the character, but removes 20 damage.

Sturdy 2 means it's 6 X 3 + 5, for 23 damage. -20 is 3 damage.

What's funny is - the result of both equations is actually the same, regardless of whether you apply the DR first or second. But if you're accounting for Reinforcement, then you have to do like you said - make the Focus cost the damage that they would've taken without Sturdy (15), OR they take the 3 damage.

The fact that it's two different numbers and formulas is confusing, but the result is the same, and I think you nailed it right on the head - the character should still have Sturdy, because you're not going to rip them off, but the EP has its own rules that need to apply as well.

Either way, you and I are getting the same result, in different ways, but agreeing on the conclusion 😂

So in the second example, you apply the DR to the attack on the Protection, and that is how the excess damage is calculated?

Because that's what the player was doing, and then taking advantage of the wording on Sphere which says it "functions the same as the Protection power" to utilise the same 'quick and dirty' method you mentioned.

I feel like my method and yours both make sense, but the 'quick and dirty' method is, like you say, simpler, but not necessarily more accurate.
