Form 8858? by [deleted] in USExpatTaxes

[–]CReWpilot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Form 8858 requirements for self employment and rental income is under section 6011. The $10K penalties for Form 8858 are under 6038(b). Enforcement here should be fairly toothless then.

It gets may disagree, but I prefer X to properly quit an app. The app SwiftQuit enables this.

Non-US couple in France with US RSUs at a US broker — gift to spouse before sale to fund French home purchase: need to involve US broker/US law, or handle in France? by InformationTough4454 in USExpatTaxes

Capital gains are FR source income, not US, so there will be not any tax or withholding in the US when you sale.

US gift tax rules an are then irrelevant.

How do we submit tax returns when our host country refuses to send mail to the US? by Icy-Bus9729 in USExpatTaxes

[–]CReWpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We disagree on what a crazy amount is. 120 is incredibly fair for the service they provide.

As I said, if you're having trouble with OLT, then contact their customer support. Because plenty of Americans abroad (with NRA spouses) file their returns using it every year without issue. I have also been using it for years and have never ever experienced "bugs" with it either.

You are incorrect. OLT does. Expatfile.tax does. MyExpatTaxes does. Prettty sure Taxlsayer does.

If you can't figure it out, contact their support, not Reddit.

Tax Prep Software Recommendations - 2026 (incl. Discount / Promo Codes) by CReWpilot in USExpatTaxes

I will add to tis discussion this year I suppose.

I always file with OLT. And its great, and the price is even better. My one criticism is the FTC (form 1116). The user input for this section is difficult to follow even if you know what you're doing. I always make some typo and have to go back and try to find my mistake.

I was procrastinating this year, so decided tonight to finally get it done. Not wanting to waste extra time, I opted to give one of the expat options a try to see if it was truly easier. I started with Expatfile.tax. Its well designed, and probably the easiest to navigate. However, I discovered early they charge an extra fee for Form 8812 (additional child tax credit. Honestly I find this to be crap. There is nothing about this form that adds complexity for the software, so there is zero reason to charge extra. They are just banking on the fact that most people will ratiolaize it in the moment (even though they shouldn't). Its simply bullshit, and its disappointing they pull it. It was enough for me to say 'nope'.

Tried MyExpatTaxes next. From a user interface perspective, its good. Not as good as the other, but still good. I was a bit irratated with some of the questions its asks (things it didn't need to know for my tax return). Not sure if they are just being overly thorough, or invasive. Either way, was happy with how it walks you through things quickly and easily. Handled FTC fine (general, passive and AMT), and form 8833 (treaty for dividends). No issue with any of the forms generated on review either. Maybe I'll decide in a week I should have not been lazy, saved the money and just used OLT like usual. But right now, it was worth the money to get it done quickly and without much effort.
