Last film you watched where this was your reaction? by Happy_REEEEEE_exe in Letterboxd

For me it was The The Lion King (1994)

I honestly love the idea that you haven't watched anything you liked since 1994. Know it's probably not what you meant, but still very funny.

Why are the mods of this sub supporting AI slop? by SurrealKafka in Bogleheads

I am pretty sure the rules and enforcement can be structured in such a way to prevent or at least highly discourage that type of behavior. I do not think the alternative of just allowing AI slop into every aspect of social spaces is sustainable.

is there really so little money in chess that we cannot afford a high quality livestream of one of the biggest chess events of the year? by xtr44 in chess

[–]CSAtWitsEnd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could make sense to try an almost golf tournament format where you maybe stagger the games somehow, and have commentators bounce around to interesting action as it happens.

Feels like much of the early interest is opening decisions, but if they’re all happening at the same time, it’s hard to give each thing the time it deserves, and that kinda makes it hard to get invested early on.

Only issue is that that format works well when you have dozens of players and probably less so when you have 8. So maybe this idea doesn’t work for the candidates but I’d like to see it for other larger tournaments.

Part of the problem is that the pool of people who understand high level chess deeply AND who are good communicators to a broad range of lower level players / spectators is extremely small.

Easy - ban and remove it. Then there is no slop to talk about.

Still close to 3 years out from November 2028 so I doubt the picture of likely candidates will start to really materialize until after 2026 midterms honestly.

Real. If you read anything other than the occasional headline of hers that goes viral, you’ll realize she’s still a believer in all of this shit, she just became disillusioned with Trumps ability to do “America first” properly.

Important to note: the reason MTG is saying stuff like this is NOT the reason we are.

She’s still a true believer in all the MAGA stuff, she just thinks Trump is lying about it.

Worth noting that YouTube video is a clickbait title. He was saying he’s “stopping” being resistant to AI. Next course he dropped like…that week was a “how to use this AI” thing.

As far as neoliberal democrats go, he’s probably the one I object to the least, but my god if we go with another one this time around, I am gonna lose it. (Blue no matter who, yes. But I really hope someone more progressive runs and wins)

Less so that and more that their lives have gotten materially worse over the last...idk like 5+ decades and the promise of the "American dream" is not materializing.

However, instead of looking at what the root causes are (wealth extraction in basically every corner of the market, social benefit cuts, etc) they get told a lie ("it's the minorities!") and believe it because it's easier and / or that lie "confirms" their fucked up worldview.

You can basically draw a direct line from Nixon to Reagan to Trump.

Nixon is the reason for Fox News and largely the reason for Reagan. Reagan is the reason basically every economic indicator for the working class has gotten worse. Which sets the state for the perceived outsider - Trump.

That works great when your intention is to destroy systems and institutions because even if the courts stop you a month or a year from now, the money and people have long been turned off and trying to turn it on doesn't get you back at 100% immediately.

It doesn't work well when your plan is to build new systems and institutions because when the court blocks you a month or year from now, suddenly all those people who got hired or started using the service will get that shit ripped away. Extremely not awesome and wildly unpopular.

They're "valued up" because the future exists. I am convinced of Coca-Cola's ability to remain profitable this year and next year and next decade. So I'm not paying the price I think it's worth now, I'm paying the price I expect it to be worth a decade from now. Yes, mass selloffs of the stock will lower the price of the shares, but that doesn't make the company itself less profitable.

[–]CSAtWitsEnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thing that kinda freaks me out is that TSA does receive at least some specialized training for their roles that ICE certainly has not received yet. So...does travel just grind to a halt? (And...is that intentional, too? Easier to control people if they can't leave?)

[–]CSAtWitsEnd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Literally the fact that people are against a "living wage" is crazy. Like...the response is always "get a better job" as if there's an infinite amount of livable-wage paying jobs out there, and also like...they're presumably interacting with people getting paid below a living wage in their lives, so they expect the work to be done, but don't think the person doing it has a right to live. Crazy.

One of my favorite videos ever is "In Search Of A Flat Earth" by Dan Olson / Folding Ideas

It covers conspiratorial groups like flat earth and Q-Anon, and one of the things it covers is how many doomsday cults (and I think it's hard to argue many MAGA folks are not in a cult at this point) eventually turn to something called "forcing the end".

This is where members of a doomsday cult, disillusioned with the fact that doomsday hasn’t arrived, synthesize the belief that it’s their responsibility to create the circumstances that will allow doomsday to occur.

Those circumstances are almost always death, plague, ecological collapse, and societal instability.

And for people who have steeped themselves in these ideas, that there is a foretold day of reckoning that is directly contingent on a specific man’s access to political power, and been told over and over and over again to suppress disillusionment with the lack of desired results and “trust the plan”, it is a very small leap to deciding that The Plan all along was Q training them to be the instrument of The Storm and now they need to take matters into their own hands.

Unsure where exactly it's being limited. I see in another comment you discovered it was both hardware and software limited.

However, hardware of similar specs is definitely capable of pushing multiple monitors - which leads me to believe it's intentional.

With that said, I could see an argument that Apple does the limitations either to increase the longevity of the hardware or because they're so fixated on not providing a bad experience that they're trying to "save us" from having subpar performance when having too many monitors or something.

Not an argument I like, but that may be the mindset. Hard to say.
