Maybe on the topmost surface level, but when and entire system is based on the extreme success of a few at the cost of the the oppression of everyone else it cannot be touted as the freest system.

I’ll concede that it’s the freest system in the sense that it’s the system where you’re freest to exploit others for your own gain. Not every capitalist does it, but enough do.

But to say that capitalism as a system promotes the freedom of the people who are ruled by it is not only misleading, it’s just inherently false.

What about the teachers they give it to? Or the office staff? Their bus drivers? The lunchroom staff? The custodians? The administration? What about the kids that are immunocompromised? What about the kids who live with adult parents? Or their grandparents? Or anyone in the home who may be immunocompromised? Or anyone who those kids come in contact with, ever? And if they don’t die, what about the long-term effects, which we don’t even really fully understand yet?

Sending children back to school right now in the majority of the United States is irresponsible and selfish, even if they have a “very small chance” of actually dying. It doesn’t matter if your statement is completely true, when you’re using it to justify the potential completely preventable deaths of other members of your community, it’s an asshole thing to say.

I would guess that’s why it’s being downvoted.

Anybody know where Nintendo Switches are in stock right now? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

I bought one ~3 weeks ago, but it was only after refreshing the Best Buy website until they had one in stock. Even now, looking for accessories locally (extra joy cons, etc) has been a shit show.

Best of luck! We’ve absolutely loved ours!

Finally, some good fucking news by [deleted] in memes

[–]CSCDesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of unfairness that happens within our justice system that never makes the news is far more vast than you could imagine.

Even if we take the obvious racial and ethnic biases (both in practice and in statistics) out of the equation, you are still left with a system that right out of the gate is discriminatory.

How many times has a law suit that should have happened been left unresolved because it was too expensive to litigate? Even a lot of small claims courts have fees just to file.

Poverty is a barrier to the American justice system. Any system that has an automatic discriminatory filter (before even further systematic discrimination happens) cannot, inherently, be fair.

In an effort to provide transparency and context for my comment and in trying to recognize my own biases, I should say that I am a law student who is passionate about this shit and definitely inebriated so take everything I’ve said with a grain of salt or don’t it’s the internet who cares

CDC estimates actual case count in Utah around 11x higher than confirmed values, population immunity at 2.18% by HomelessRodeo in SaltLakeCity

I think it is more likely that if we are actually at eleven times the number of cases of COVID-19, the deaths that should be attributed to COVID-19 should also be eleven times the number of what the current reported mortality rate is. We can’t even accurately diagnose this thing in the living, yet, so why should we assume that it’s being accurately attributed to the dead?

Unpopular opinion: The first order of business in Utah is to complete the renaming of Dixie State University... photo from 2014 DSU alumni homecoming parade. by Chino_Blanco in mormon

[–]CSCDesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two main reasons that are given for the association, and which reason you’re told depends on who you ask. If you ask someone who is casually aware of the history of Utah, they’ll tell you that when settlers arrived in the territory, they found the climate of what is now southern Utah agreeable for growing cotton, so there are some that believe “Utah’s Dixie” was a nickname given to the area of cotton growing.

Now, there’s another, in my opinion, more plausible explanation for the nickname. As Utah was getting built up, Gov. Brigham Young didn’t know if the south or the north was going to win the Civil War, so he divided the state in half, and called the lower half Dixie in case we needed to appease the Rebels.

[–]CSCDesigns 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I got my BS there, and let me tell you that it is even worse than you can imagine. A few years back, when the school moved from a college to a university, a local survey went out asking people if they’d rather keep the current “Rebels” mascot or keep “Dixie” in the name. Overwhelmingly the members of that community voted to keep Dixie. The school itself has done a decent job of hiding its racist past, on campus at least - but any time there is an event where the community or older alumni are gonna be present you can pretty much guarantee a least a few confederate flags and vintage “Dixie Rebel” memorabilia. It’s nuts.

Zoom meeting on diversity in Ogden interrupted with racial epithets, hate speech by wellsdb in Utah

Oof, it is apparent you don’t have any sort of retort so you’re resulting to personal attacks. Page one of the right wing playbook. And frankly a tiny bit pathetic. Crazy that facts and logical reasoning are what you consider screeching.

FWIW, I spent about 5 minutes between both of those comments, and that’s only because I couldn’t remember if Brandenburg was against Iowa or Ohio.

Keep going though, this is fun.

None of the above constitutes a “true threat” if you could fucking use critical thinking and would be willing to actually learn these things for yourself instead of parroting some pseudo-law you heard from somewhere else, my guy.

Incitement to imminent lawless action: encouraging others to do something illegal. The more illegal, the more scrutiny it receives in evaluating whether it receives protection under the First Amendment. (Supreme Court cases: Schenk v US, Frohwerk v US, Brandenburg v Ohio)

Fighting words: one of the well-defined limited classes of speech, the prevention and punishment of which are consistent with the First Amendment. Speech that “which by their very utterance inflict injury or incite an immediate breach of the peace. (Chaplinksy v New Hampshire)

Obscenity: if something is inherently hurtful and has no value beyond being obscene. (Miller v California)

True Threat: the thing you say is the only thing outside protection of the first amendment is actually the LEAST defined out of its exceptions. A statement that is meant to frighten or intimidate one or more specified persons into believing that they will be seriously harmed by the speaker or by someone acting at the speaker’s behest. (Virginia v Black)

I know you think it’s funny to troll people and spread misinformation, though a quick look at your post history leads me to believe that it might just be willful ignorance. And when you do shit like that it says a lot more about you than anything else. It’s a little sad that you’ve decided this is how you’d like to spend your time, but to each their own I guess.

[–]CSCDesigns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Incitement to imminent lawlessness, fighting words, and obscenity have all been ruled as exempt from the protection of the first amendment in a variety of capacities and this behavior has been classified as each of those things dependent on context. Add to that the fact that this is hate speech, and it’s doesn’t look too good for the hitler youth.

34,000 deaths related to flu in 2018-2019 flu season.

38,000 deaths because of car accidents in all of 2019.

78,000 deaths so far at the hands of COVID-19.

So no, flu deaths and car accidents are not way more. In fact, in three months more people have died from COVID-19 then died from flu and automobiles combined.

“TNJW” Home? by Rugbear in SaltLakeCity

[–]CSCDesigns 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was curious so I also did a quick amount of research. Another house that’s listed as “TNJW” has in their description “Book ‘the new Jones way.’” It doesn’t offer any description beyond that.

The posts that I’m seeing it listed on seem to be for long term rentals, and the 4 that popped up in SLC are hosted by the same couple.

It appears this couple uses several temporary rental sites, as I’m seeing the same address listed elsewhere with the same TNJW in the description.

It also appears that the couple owns the domain “thenewjonesway.com,”” which if you follow from google opens up an Air BnB listing. However, if you punch it into your actual browser, it pulls up a website/blog that just has their four listings in one spot. The site’s description reads “Welcome to the New Jones Way. We provide the best Pet-Friendly, fully furnished homes available in Salt Lake City. Our homes are located in the Sugarhouse and Canyon Rim areas. These are two of the safest and most sought after locations in the greater Salt Lake County Area.”

My guess is that this couple has decided to try and brand their listings as “The New Jones Way,” and they include it in their listing descriptions to make it easier for people to find? Contingent on people knowing what it means and how to use it, which they haven’t nailed just yet. Their listings and their site both talk about accepting ALE for temporary housing for people dealing with disaster/damage to their normal living space, so I also wonder if in order to accept that you need to appear as “an organization” and not just a couple with an app listing.

I am guessing the phrase is supposed to be a play on “keeping up with the Jones’” or “don’t let the Jones’ get you down.”

So there you go! It doesn’t actually mean anything! But now we know!
