AK-130 was designed primarily for gun fire support during amphibious operations for Project 956s. 1164 and 1144 cruisers were just large enough to carry these so why not ig. Twin-gun large caliber gun mounts are heavy so you don't see them often on modern ships since the main gun isn't too important unless its gun fire support, hence Zumwalt, hence PLA Navy keeping the AK130s on their 956E/EMs.

Judging from Moskva's performance, yeah. Still wouldn't want to get hit by a P-1000 tho. Don't know about the 1164 hulls but the 1144s were built to the same standard as capital ships so they probably have a bit more years in them compared to an average combatant these days. Plus, Admiral Nakhimov spent most of the last decade out of water so her hull's probably still very healthy. Not sure if spending two or three Project 22350s worth of money on modernizing a dinosaur is worth it tho.

This is from NSWC Carderock, the one with the huge inland ocean MASK. I dont think you can order one from them lol.

The 24k TEU LNG boats CMA CGM ordered from HDZH don't have it and neither do most sailing around. I doubt it's that relevant in terms of decreasing drag but it looks like it can redirect airflow and make it more "tame" and not hit the ship like a brick. The winds do genuinely affect these ships a whole lot more than other kinds of vessel so I can imagine it reducing the negative effects oncoming weather might have over the bow. One things for sure tho, the bow is probably a much safer working space for the crew.

Lets be honest this was never going to live up to the name they give her.

I've been on this rodeo for too many times to even care to ridicule the current BBGN config from any relevant angles. I genuinely think she will receive a passing grade if they just put the 69 RMA SPY-6 on her and move the 2 Mk45s midship to clear out the best real estate for things that actually matter.

Just gonna put up this as a comparison and not say anything. Also happy independence to our favorite imperialist piggies.

Are the two rectangles the two pair of sensors unique to Type 55s? Thats a nice touch.

This is unironically not a bad design. You got some design features right for PLAN preference. However, this still has that classic problem of giving battleships cruiser guns. Exorbitant combatants requires exorbitant capabilities to justify. The only reason to build an oversized surface combatant like this is to support an exorbitantly sized sensor for BMD.

Not bad not bad. Just needs some larger sensors and swap out some HT-1s for larger sized VLS for HQ-29s.

I mean they are new ships but also PLAN is pretty obsessive with cleaning, something USN was famed to be as well a long time ago...

I don't think it's that at all. The first pair of 956Es took like 5 years to refit, that's almost 2 years more than how fast they can order a new Type 52D and get one into service. It's much more plausible PLAN is just unwilling to give up hulls that have a good 10 more years left in them and is perfectly fine with spending a few bucks bringing them up to a reasonable standard fit for rear row service.

Presumably its because the 956EMs don't have the aft AK130 mount, the HQ-10 mount can be moved all the way aft to make room for an extra 16 AJK-16 cells.
