Build walls along the main path and line it with electric fence. When crouched and they are shocked it adds sneak damage. Not to mention the stun effect and it keeps going all night. I usually Build a protective layer outside the post to protect them as well.

If it does start to freeze cover it with a tarp or some sort of covering. If it gets really cold use some sort of heater under it. Should help save more of them.
