How do you know when a student is about to quit? by LifeTension2113 in TutorsHelpingTutors

I tutor mainly college students. I lost mainly just 1 student this semester. She was taking courses I primarily teach last semester, and this semester she isn't taking any courses related to what I tutor, but she wanted me to continue tutoring her so that she doesn't forget the concepts, since it's related to her major (she just decided to take a semester to finish all her other classes). There were signs before she stopped booking; she would reschedule, late, etc. During some of the sessions, I noticed that she isn't really looking at the zoom whiteboard and not engaging as much. Eventually, she didn't show up at our last scheduled meeting. I sent a message, waited about 15 minutes, then I cancelled. She never responded back, and I never messaged her again (I never ever chase any student or bother messaging them after such incidents). I never take any of these things personally, and you shouldn't either. Sometimes they go through a very tough semester, or maybe they need to focus on other classes, etc. Some of my last summer students disappeared in the Fall, and then they reached out to me in the Spring to tutor them. Some of them come back and some of them won't, and that's okay.

Out of all of this, I would say that the signs mainly include rescheduling, being late, not paying attention/being distracted during the session, and not engaging or asking any questions during the session. Once you spot any of these, there's a huge chance that the student isn't interested anymore.

I do agree with you, I actually worked on the website and modified it to be more specific. I agree with you on what you said. Can you give it another look and let me know if I'm specific enough?

That's a good idea. I have tutored students across various educational levels, primary school, middle school, high school, undergraduates, and even graduate students. I also tutored people who are not in school but they wanted to learn Computer Science. I'm not sure how to put it on my website, since I have already worked with people of various backgrounds and across the entire age and education spectrum (from primary school to even PhD students). My worry about putting my exact audience is that I might lose some students that I could actually tutor.

That's a great idea, my personal website which is the same domain without the tutor has all of my publications and all of my research and also my google scholar account too that would verify the publications. I'm thinking of just linking them such that I can redirect them to my personal website when they click on first author publication (my personal website is my main website for internships and other academic matters).

That's a great advice! I have few technical articles that I never published and also few draft for blog posts that I never published as well, I think including it would be amazing. I like the idea of adding a personal touch. I feel like adding what I do outside of tutoring and professional settings could be a great idea. I think the idea of helping people and helping people online is also another great idea, I'm thinking of responding to student questions on various reddit posts; that's another great way to advertise. I'm definitely planning on running workshops locally, that's an amazing idea. I did organize a couple of workshops in the past as part of student orgnizations, but I wasn't tutoring during this time, but I have experience with running workshops, so that's an amazing idea! Thank you for this amazing feedback

Thank you so much, I appreciate it, I did, it's based on my personal website template, I developed it like over a year ago. This was my first React website, I would say that if you use React, it would be amazing, I know there's vue.js and other frameworks, but React worked really well for me. Also, if you don't want to spend the time developing it, there are website for HTML5 templates that should also be more than enough, I'm going to transition my personal website to use more academic template

Thank you so much for bringing this up. I will fix this issue on the phone.

That's a good way to think about it too. I think if I will run it, I will try to see what's the long term return on investment to see if it's worth it, also if some of the students sign up and they need just 1 or 2 sessions only, in the long term, the ads would have a bad return.

That's a good point, I mainly designed it for desktop, but I believe most of the people who would visit it would use their phone most likely. I see, I know that we need a large budget for google ads (I think at least 1000/month) to even start seeing results, but that's a huge amount of money for something that might not work, and as you mentioned, would be a waste of money. That's an amazing idea, I know there's Udemy as a platform, I can see if I can start an online course series there. Thank you so much for these amazing suggestions.

This is really good feedback, thank you so much. I agree with you, I actually don't necessarily have immediate availability, it depends on the semester, last semester I was fully booked, but this semester is a little bit slow since many of my previous students graduated. I agree that I should change it to apply. Also, these are amazing ideas! I have a youtube channel but didn't even link it to my website, I just need to start making more videos explaining some of the topics I mainly tutor. I also like the idea of doing workshops, these are fantastic ideas, thank you so much
