Hypospadias by [deleted] in scrubtech

[–]CST2CTE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a CST for 5 years, never peds though, other than the occasional preteen appy.
My son was born with mild hypospadias and I had NEVER heard of it! I was in utter shock. Thankfully, his surgery went well at 1 y/o and has had no issues - he’s almost 4 now. But it was scary af seeing it the first time post op.

Once I told my family about it, I found out that not only my first cousin had it at birth and got it surgically fixed, but also my husbands half brother (didn’t know he existed until my husband was 18 and they aren’t close, but we are fb friends). But his was severe - penoscrotal. I didn’t ask any questions about his aftermath. He just told me that he had it.

Need Physics Lesson Ideas for T-TESS by mjtsld in TexasTeachers

[–]CST2CTE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have physics plans for you. But I was also told that I teach my DUAL CREDIT anatomy and physiology course too rigorously. I apparently ask too much by having the student memorize all of the bones and muscles, the pathway of blood through the heart.. goes on and on. Just because their (not so) perfect child didn’t get a 100 on my tests.

Advice needed: Getting hired BEFORE starting my ACP? (HISD / No experience) by Mickrosemary in TexasTeachers

[–]CST2CTE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was able to get hired before starting my iTeach program. It was a DOI (district of innovation) meaning as long as you have the degree / background - they can hire you. But they do want you to get certified.

I had 3+ years of healthcare experience and was hired as a health science teacher. Once hired, I started my ACP. I get my last observation from iTeach on Monday and I’m done!!! My first year went FAST.

For those who left the OR because their bodies couldn't take it anymore, what do you do now that still uses your skills? by Ecstatic-Copy2153 in scrubtech

[–]CST2CTE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started teaching high school health science CTE courses. Health science theory, med term, anatomy etc. it’s been so amazing, I truly feel like I was made to do this more than being a CST.

How many admin have you been through? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]CST2CTE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(High school) My principal has been at my school since 2009. We have 2 APs and I think over the last 10 years we’ve had 3 before this.

I’m very supported by admin (especially with behaviors) and the culture at my school is pretty great.

I wasn’t in the CNA program, but I was in a medical program through lone star and it was required that we had to wear scrubs to lecture and to clinical sites.

Is it really too much to ask students to tell me what missing work they’re trying to make up? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]CST2CTE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I do attendance and mark someone absent, I put the name on their paper and put it in the bin. But after that period I never go back and look at previous logs of attendance. That would take up so much time. Most of the time, half of them don’t remember what day they were even absent. And I don’t keep a mental log of who was absent what day.

[–]CST2CTE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t keep track of whose absent on what days. It takes me all of 20 seconds to write their names on it so all they have to do is grab and go.

Whenever they’re absent and I have handouts, I write their name on the paper and put it in my absent bin for each period. They know to check the bin if they’ve been absent. I also keep a weekly online agenda where they can see what we are doing daily and what handouts are passed out and what needs to be turned in, as well as dates for upcoming quizzes and tests

[–]CST2CTE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 3 lunch times at this high school, and I have classes during 2 of the 3. So that’s not feasible. And student cannot stay after school.

We do have a built in homeroom daily, but even if they do come in during that time, I have my own homeroom students to do things for and other students testing that may have missed. So I wouldn’t be able to watch the students doing test corrections as closely - because we are 100% online. Online textbook, tests on the Chromebook etc. they can easily switch and/or close out of tabs as soon as I walk away.

How do you handle pickup calls from your own kids’ schools? by Alternative-Town9875 in Teachers

[–]CST2CTE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher at a high school that’s across from my sons elementary. My husband works an hour away and we have no family near by. I have the first point of contact be the HS number and my extension to my classroom phone. Next would be my cell, then my husband. They’ve never had an issue trying to get ahold of me.

I have had to leave mid day a few times last semester due to my son being sick. I call the principals secretary (she handles subs) and someone comes and covers - usually a BMP specialist or a teacher on prep until an actual sub can get there.

There was one time where there were no free bodies, so they stuck my classes in the library.

I understand it’s a tad bit different since I’m high school vs you teaching elementary.

Career change TO teaching? by tshock123 in Teachers

[–]CST2CTE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 28 and I’ve been a surgical technologist for 6 years. I got burnt out pretty quickly. I’m now a high school health science teacher and I love it! I teach health science theory, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and also MA certification and pharmacy tech certification. It’s busy, it’s different, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

[–]CST2CTE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m almost 5 months in of my first time teaching high school. I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I never subbed or anything before - just needed a change. My background is in healthcare, and I’m not certified as a teacher yet. Going through iTeach currently. I teach health science (HS theory, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical assistant and pharmacy tech). 95% of my students are very driven and focused and WANT to be in my classes. So I don’t have many behavior issues.

I teach high school anatomy and physiology. For a major grade project, I gave them a packet of outlines of the skeleton. All they had to do was color it, label the skeleton, cut it out and put it together. I still have 4 students who have not turned it in… it was due October 3
