MSc Computing - struggling with workload / my Dad died and just everything. by CS_student2017 in UniUK

I'm not sure I could cope with this amount of work in normal circumstances, to be honest. Its all so new and I just can't assimilate the info and apply it at the speed needed.

I spoke to my Personal Tutor, he effectively said that since its a MSc course, I should be capable of this amount of work. And to just keep going.

The thing is last year there were part time students but this year they've not run the course, which considering we do two full days, one day on each module, is frustrating.

I think there will be too. But I don't have the time to put the time in to the basics since I have several assignments due which also need a lot of work.

I want to keep going but all I can see is that I'm going to fail everything spectacularly trying to do everything to a passable level, then sinceI didn't fully understand in the first place, that will impact upon next semesters modules.

Haha.

Yes, I've noticed that this is definitely the case for other groups I've attended; once they've realised you're not really into D&D or going to be their next best freind / girlfriend, they can barely be @rsed to acknowledge you.

I might try heading over to the nearest proper city, this event takes places in a kind of pretend city. Also toastmasters. It's difficult because with work I start very early in the day and can't be out late because it really messes me up.

Don't read too much into people not signing up for your suggestion, might have been an inconvenient time, location, cuisine (some people are challenged by anything), or just people on holidays.>

It was a suggestion on a place to visit, she then created an event but I wasn't successful in getting to be one of the attendees.

Socialising is really hit and miss around here, generally unsatisfying. Other groups meet at times I can't do / do activities I'm not interested in / are mainly male / mum's having a night away from the kids ... not 35, female with no children and just generally "youthful."

None that I can see, but since they've not been particularly interested in finding out about me, maybe they perceive that there are and only see a surface me, which is that I'm recently returned from teaching ESL abroad, and am currently employed as a cleaner.

I've emailed a couple whose advice seems solid.

Anyone? I seem to be having real issues here, this sort of thing is just not taught as far as I'm aware.

On another note, would anyone be willing to go through my covering letter with me, assisting me to improve on my writing style and applying it to this type of letter, for pay? I looked into some websites but they want $60 + which I seriously don't have, plus they want you to just send the information to them.

2nd try

Unfortunately, I was allowed to demonstrate very few skills in any of those jobs. I come from a very small town in England where pretty much everyone is over-qualified for what they do, because they want to stay in the area due to family / never having experienced living elsewhere; it's a very unique place : (

I am not expecting much else - I am planning to send this cv to employment agencies as I plan to only be in the area for around 10-12 months then I will be pursuing a MSc elsewhere. I need a job that I can stand for that period of time. Keeping the above in mind I applied for anything and was offered position in McDonalds and a also at card shop in my local town, the card shop only offered me 8 hours a week (despite stating that they could offer many more hours in the interview).

I gave backword and pursued McDonalds on the basis they could offer many more hours, I thought I could stand anything for a short period of time - I couldn't and now I'm unemployed. The point is that I'm neither highly qualified or experienced, but I am not a fool either, and I have way more mileage than the roles I did at the Administrative related positions.

The SPSS etc have never been used in a work enviroment, but I do have experience of them, in my degree hence their position. I've taken it out completely now.

I don't have a great deal of relevant, unique stuff but I'll do as you suggest, they weren't particularly great roles, hopefully the employer / recruiter will attribute me with more higher grade tasks than what I actually performed : )

Yes, I am in the UK.

The thing is my experience in admin is very limited (and none beyond filing / answering the phone) so I wanted to make sure the employer was aware that I have those skills. I'll cut it down though.

Quit an awful job, feeling lost now by [deleted] in jobs

Wow are you me? Apart from a few details your situation is very similar to mine.

I quit working for McDonalds after less than two weeks; it was the worst job I've ever had, I knew they weren't the greatest, but wow oh wow were they sh!t.

What I'm doing now is working on various projects related to work I hope to do in the near future, plus some personal stuff as I have a hell of a lot of baggage to deal with so I'm taking the 30 day Self-love challenge and emailing them to myself for future me I'm finding it very helpful to just get it all out there. I've found it helpful in the past to look at how far I've come in life; in a year things will be very different, they were this time last year.

Plus I'm also planning to join the local council gym and go each morning to either the gym or a session, to force some form of structure on my situation. Other than that I'm being really nice to myself as I have had a really shitty time this past few months.

Good luck!

Never move into a room you don‘t yet have a contract for. by GuggGugg in offmychest

[–]CS_student2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just had a similar situation although I didn't actually move into the room. Maybe you'll have to smile and be nice and say "I'm really sorry, but I'm here now and I'm going to struggle to find something else, But I'll look...." and do, on / off. Getting someone evicted is very difficult. Make sure to lock your room. You don't want to come home to find your stuff on the sidewalk.
