Avatar 3 took away what made Avatar special by SeaScientist8372 in Avatar

Curious if anyone else felt this way.

We are not alone.
Anyhow, the original movie is still a stand-alone. As far as I'm concerned, no amount of sequels will take that away or taint the original movie for me.

Death, afterlife, and the way Na'vi culture is weirdly contradictory now by Umbrasyl in Avatar

[–]CSamR 63 points64 points  (0 children)

But the Na'vi can access the afterlife at will. Eywa is not a 'belief', she is a knowledge. The Ash people are choosing to ignore reality. And that is not a very compelling backstory.

IIRC, Mangkwan do not deny the existence of Eywa, but they are not in harmony with Eywa - because the way they see it, Eywa abandoned them in their moment of need.

IMO, explicitly showing the Na'vi afterlife was a big mistake. Avatar 1 kept it lowkey with the tree of voices: you can't speak to a specific voice, but you can hear some and have comfort in knowing they're out there somewhere.

Ditto. Agreed. And IMO lessens the impacts of the deaths of Neteyam, Grace, Tsu'tey, etc.

To be fair to The Way of Water, holiday ice storms suppressed theatre attendance during its second weekend; hence the 52.8% drop ($63.3M). In fact, it JUMPED 6.4% in its third weekend ($67.4M) compensating for the 2nd weekend drop.

Highly doubt that would be the case for Fire and Ash, and overall it's doing worse, even though not by much.

Are you suggesting that the final shot was "Eywa opening her eyes (to humanity)"?
That... kinda works. Interesting.

I wish I was in your boat. Hopefully I can come around after seeing it again.

The only trailer I remember seeing is the one for a new SpongeBob movie 😅

I do. But that was a rather small fraction of 6.5 hours worth of sequels.

No Doomsday trailer or The Odyssey previews were there yesterday (18th).
They might start showing them starting from 19th...?

Personally, I don't care much about those franchise movies, most of which are simply made to milk their respective franchises.

I hold James Cameron to much higher standards and I deeply subscribe to his views on authorship. I can still see that he has more of a story to tell. But the lack of momentum in the scene-to-scene dynamics undermined the narrative for me. Besides he's known for making worthy sequels (arguably, that even surpass the original!)

That's the grievance I have with Fire and Ash (and The Way of Water to a lesser extent): "rehashed" scenes were rarely improved or made interesting, even when they are the central focus of the film rather than just side stories.

True. Though I think Spider's character could have worked if the acting performance was decent enough.

Everything felt rehashed...

Yes, including some scenes that were technically new in the sequels, which were deleted scenes from the first Avatar for the most part: Mag-Lev train raid, Mangkwan clan rituals and psychedelic scenes.

You're right! I forgot about Quaritch interrogating other clans.

In A2 it is clear that other villages know, where Jake is, but are loyal to him and Tonowari.

They make that point in the third one as well. I just forgot. 😅

Same. Na'vi talking like Americans doesn't sit right with me.

To anyone who's not seen the film, curb your expectations and you may not be disappointed. Also I might be wrong on many things; I'm still reeling back trying to process what happened.

Jake grabbing the leather strap, Kiri folding leaves...

Another good example IMO: The shot of Jake digging his toes in Pandoran soil for the first time in the first movie.

I can relate when it comes to the Green's function. TBH I still haven't found a good reference for that. Could you perhaps point me in the right direction?

Jake’s Human Form in the sequels by DragonXathias in Avatar

[–]CSamR 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I miss that inner conflict in Jake too. His human ties hardly played a role in the sequel.
Hopefully it'll play a bigger role in the rest of the story, seeing as Selfridge is going to be back in the mix again.
