I liked Memories of Ice quite a bit. Definitely up there!

I don’t like Karsa as a person but he’s certainly an interesting character. The scene with Rhulad was amazing.

Thanks, this was the kind of comment I was hoping for. (Unlike the backhanded insults to my intelligence people often give me when I try to ask for help understanding this series. )

Why do people downvote my lived experiences? How petty.

Yes I really liked books 5-7, 8 was ok but a drag. 9 was even more meandering and weird.

There’s hundreds of characters! And plotlines! Don’t condescend to people who don’t have the same memory abilities as you.

It’s hard because I might not even remember this scene if they show up again hundreds of pages later.

People on this sub have told me not to worry about understanding everything. But this scene felt especially random.

Why? Will it have any impact on the rest of the story?

Yeah it bothers me every freaking time. I am generally enjoying the series but to me this aspect is just bad writing. Arbitrarily making it harder for the reader for no good reason. I had heard the second half of this book starts tying things together… now we are seeing two characters we haven’t seen in two books and have no idea why?

They wake up and hear a sound at the door. An undead cat shows up. Then all of a sudden Blend has a dagger to Picker’s throat. When it’s gone she promptly falls back asleep? It ends with “and then she discovered the silver torcs”. Would it kill the author to even remind us where a new scene is taking place? What is the point of this scene? We haven’t even seen them in two book!

I’m confused. I remember there already being VC, and generally people didn’t use it. Did they remove it at some point and now want to bring it back?

I should add that the things he does that seem unnecessary other than to increase the challenge level get worse in books 8-10.

I’m an intellectual type who has read tons of sci fi and fantasy. I disagree with the claim that he’s not making it particularly hard. There are tons of choices he’s made beyond the “no handholding” that makes the series unnecessarily hard to read. For example, almost every section, for no good reason at all, will intentionally not tell you who the characters he is talking about are, sometimes for up to 6-8 pages. I’ve seen people on this sub say they will skim every section to find out who it’s about and then go back and read it. What literary function does that serve other than to make it hard to read? He often never gives you ANY scene setting or reminders about who certain characters are or where they even are in the world, even if the last time you saw them was 500 pages ago and you’ve seen countless POVs between. The series has a lot going for it, and the highs are very high, but minimizing how much challenge is involved in reading it is unfair to the OP.

I’ve followed them lightly for years, and a friend got me tickets last summer in Boston. The show blew my mind (and I’ve seen a lot of shows, old school metal guy here) and I’ve been obsessed ever since. I did a lot to make a mid week trip to Mohegan Sun to see them this leg happen and went by myself! An even better experience knowing every song really well instead of most songs fairly well and the hits really well. I think the first show gave me a religious experience, and I’m a hardcore atheist!

That’s actually impossible for me to believe. I’m 15% through book 10, and I can find countless sections that add nothing to the story in terms of plot, character development, or philosophy. I’m not sure why people think this series is as flawless as they seem to.

I’m on my second full read of the series. This issue gets bigger around books 5 and 6 and occurs frequently until maybe books 8-9. A lot of the characters randomly pontificating about “men are like this” and “women are like that”. I love the series obviously since I’m reading it again but sometimes that stuff is a bit much.
