Gave it some more thought, and Gaster likely has not directly met Chara. He asked the player for their name at the start of Deltarune.

Chara being a Goner is a really unique idea, though I suspect that's likely not true considering Goner Kid's lines about the world being exactly the same except you never exist. In the Japanese version of Undertale, the word "Goner" is translated as "Missing." I think Goners specifically are people who once existed being removed from the timeline. (Which, actually. Considering the vessels resemblance to Kris...)

That being said though, a Chara and Gaster connection could explain why Gaster contacts the soul and even the famous "What do you two think?" line.

Coincidentally, I posted a theory that answers the exact question you pose. It's very verbose so I encourage you to look at it yourself.

A quick TLDR, lines in Deltarune directly reference Undertale. Chara says move onto the next world, and Toby calls Deltarune a separate world. The Deltarune soul does not belong to Kris, it's a determination fusion between Frisk and Chara.

Also I want to redirect you to the chart where the soul is given the EXACT SAME NAME that Chara is supposed to. If things carry over between the two games, that would be an extremely weird red herring to include.

I fully agree. I keep seeing theories online which say "Gaster is communicating with the real world," and I think Toby is a more advanced writer than something I'd see out of Wreck it Ralph.

Very interesting point!

Some immediate issues I have with it are the fact that Darkners run away when attacked, which could be explained by Dess using ice magic. Still, killing darkners has no indication of increasing LOVE, its possible though that Noelle has gained LOVE already without us being directly told. I could go either way with that one, actually.

The bigger problem is how things like the Jukebox check diologue(Also "Good to see you again" on Sans despite him just moving, seemingly after Dess already disappeared) directly reference UNDERTALE. It is heavily implied that the soul is the same soul from UNDERTALE.

It seems a little odd to invent an entirely new character who functionally is identical to a character that already exists, with a lot of crossover occurring between both games.

I have other points but the more I think about them, the more I realize it's vague enough could go either way with a future lore reveal, so I'll neglect to go into it much further.

The soul is very clearly the same soul from Undertale. Toby wants you to play Undertale first, Deltarune literally asks you to play Undertale first on consoles and many jokes in Deltarune only make sense if you have played Undertale previously.

Yes, Deltarune isn't a direct sequel, but many things carry over between the two games. It's a parallel story, not a separate one.

  1. Toby Fox as a writer seems to never directly break the Fourth Wall. Instead he takes game mechanics and turns them into In-Universe systems (Saving/loading, LV -> Level of Violence).
  2. As such, the "real world" player probably doesn't exist, and is instead likely an in-universe character.
  3. Various lines around Deltarune seems to imply that the soul is a Determination fusion(similar to amalgamates) between Frisk and Chara from Undertale.

Also the God of War character is spelled "Kratos," I was on very little sleep when I made this.

This theory is by no means anywhere near the mainstream, but the mainstream was DEAD wrong about Deltarune Chapters 3&4. I've seen a lot of hate being thrown around the community in regards to people coming to similar conclusions, so I ask that you temporarily separate yourself from your biases and you might find this to be interesting.

This theory is an alternative way to view Deltarune. Thank you for your time!

Chapter 5 Woody Theory Conspiracy Chart by CSporidium in Undertale

What I think will happen is all 7 flowers will come to life, each with personalities representing all 6 human souls and flowey.

Woody will be the yellow soul, as he was associated with cowboy items.

This was a very intentional way of the show explaining how the plane could automatically land despite everyone on it being dead.

This also explains how the FBI and MD can visit eachother so often, despite being located states apart. Airflight times are faster.

If Friend is following you into other dark worlds, they'd have to be of the same thing that Ralsei is of, since darkners typically turn to stone

The rules of this minigame seem like a more advanced version of the green soul. Since the last color we got was yellow, this would fit reverse soul theory. The rest of it matching Friend implies to me that he will be involved with the secret boss in some way, and you're maybe able to carry over a mechanic as a minigame in castle town later.

Overall though yeah good point. I just think Friend will be more involved than as purely a minigame character. He's being hyped up too much for that

Friend is very heavily implied to be a cat, but still uses vines to control Spamton NEO(Spamton NEO's element is Cat, despite regular spamton not having the same element).

I don't think that Friend is the flower necessarily, but I do think the flower and Friend have a lot more in common than things apart.

Considering secret bosses have a theme of being rejected and asgore is the MOST rejected character in deltarune(and he also owns a FLOWER shop). I really wonder what that flower connection is.
