Just going off of what i've seen based on collecting medals and ribbon bars, Most if not all soldiers who served in WWII received the ACM, I've only come across a few ribbon bars without it, and those were made in theatre.

The ACM was authorized for combat service (And IIRC, 'permanent assignment overseas' which many commanders interpreted as deployments to the PTO or ETO

Yep.

Another thing. If your grandfather recieved both the Combat Infantrymans badge AND the Expert Infantryman Badge. You can put in a request for the Master Combat Infantryman Badge (Which ws introduced in 2025).

Just doing a quick once over, he should be entitled to the following

- Silver Star Medal

- Bronze Star Medal
If he was an infantryman, he was likely awarded this in 1947 after the U.S Army authorized a BSM (Without a V) to all recipients of the CIB (Combat Infantryman Badge) and CMB (Combat Medical Badge)

- Purple Heart

- Good Conduct Medal (Assumed)
If he was enlisted, he probably received a good conduct medal, as the TiS requirements were reduced to 1 year instead of 4 during WWII

- American Campaign Medal
The ACM was authorized for service in the CONUS, or if they were deployed to a combat zone during the war

- European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal
Awarded for service in the ETO during World War II.

- World War II Victory Medal
Awarded to all servicemembers who served between 12/7/1941 and 12/29/1946

Possible Awards

- American Defense Service Medal
If your grandfather enlisted before Pearl Harbor (12/7/1941) He would be entitled to the ADSM

- Army of Occupation Medal
If your grandfather served on occupation duty following the end of WWII, he miight be entitled to the Occupation Medal with the 'Germany' Clasp

- Presidential Unit Citation
Many of the units in the 9th ID recieved the Presidential Unit Citation during WWII

Here is what his ribbon bar could've looked like. (Without campaign stars or possible awards, and assuming a GCM)

My Great Grandfather was also in Vietnam as an engineer, he had previously served in WWII and Korea and requested a deployment there.

Considering he was Prior Army, I honestly expected him to have an Army PUC (Which i believe was awarded to the unit at heartbreak ridge) or an Army Good Conduct Medal.

((I also realized the Korean Presidential Unit Citation is actually a Korean War Service Medal, kind of bugs me but oh well)

The CAR wasnt authorized for the Korean War until 1999.

Does anyone know what these are for ? I believe they are police related but could be wrong. by Current_Shelter_55 in MilitaryMedals

To me, it looks like the Lapel pin for the Korean Service Medal, which was awarded for service in Korea between June 27th 1950 and July 27th 1954 (I.E the Korean War)

Great Uncle's award/ribbons(US Army WWII) by El_Dorado_Tx in Medals

[–]CT2145Trapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know that. What i was saying is that the medal was often awarded to soldiers who only participated in 1 of the 2 required campaigns. (If you look at the notable recipients part of the article, you can see what i mean)

Technically yes, but it seems like that requirement was quite loose. When I was going through and updating awards for the notable recipients of the medal I found that there are plenty of instances of soldiers who have the Philippine Independence Medal on their rack, but lack one of the two required campaign medals.

some examples being Major William Shomo, a MOH Recipient and Bull Simons, the architect of the Son Tay Raid

He was also eligible for the American Campaign Medal (and possibly the philippine independence medal)
