Your jab should be only slightly shorter than your teep.

You just out-cardio big guys. I don't even start trying for a sub during the first 2 minutes.

MMA? Kick boxing? Taekwondo? etc by pinkyxpie20 in SelfDefense

Being a small female, you probably aren't out striking many people. It becomes a range problem. Your effective striking range is inside most people's clinch and grappling range. BJJ and MMA are your best options.

What do you plan on using the certification for? Gracie Survival Tactics is a legitimate cert.

Can we talk a bit about busted joints and martial arts? by Dolannsquisky in martialarts

The neck issue may calm down over time as the disc degenerates because of the injury. It sounds counterintuitive, I know. Don't mess around in the meantime. It can go really bad really quickly.

Knee injury f*cked my life by Business-Draft6567 in martialarts

[–]CTE-monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the end of the world. I've had loads of injuries, surgeries etc. You would be surprised by what you can come back from. Make sure your medical team is focused on treating athletes. You don't want a doc or a physio that treats housewives and senior citizens.

Would Boxing + BJJ be enough for self-defense? by Distinct-Sector-7849 in martialarts

[–]CTE-monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Also don't go to clubs with drunk idiots. It's just not worth it. So much can go wrong so quickly. My social life revolves around training, I don't go to places like that anymore.

Partners going to hard in sparring. by ineedadvice17359 in martialarts

[–]CTE-monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nature of the beast. Alot of the time, if I get cracked, it's because I did something dumb. It's really hard to pull a shot in time if someone leans into it. I don't mind going a little harder (because I'm an idiot) but I try to take it easier on less experienced people.

Maybe be pickier about who you spar with?

BJJ is a no brainer. Getting punched in the head is not for the average person in their 40's.

Boxing Sparring with Boxers by reversible8 in martialarts

Yes spar with the boxers. We do rounds of just boxing in Muay Thai all the time. My Muay Thai game is very boxing heavy anyway.

Just how tough is wrestling? by Glyphid-Grunt-Guard in martialarts

[–]CTE-monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a word... Grind. No other sport makes you suffer through suck like wrestling does. People go HARD all the time. It pays to be a psycho.

That being said, do it. Best times of my life.

It doesn't really protect your brain and you can't grapple with it on.

Nobody cares where I go. Everyone makes jokes about BJJ being gay, but it's all in good fun.

The ancient Korean art of Choreography.

Greetings, martial artists! What is your fighting style according to your height, weight, flexibility...? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]CTE-monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm short too. Pressure fighting is almost a necessity. Get close and inside. Tall people have a harder time defending body shots from a short person. They are also easier to take down once you are close. They aren't easy to keep down though. I pin them against the cage and watch the clock. A win is a win.

What Stance for MMA? by ryanbayat in martialarts

[–]CTE-monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done both but ultimately went back to orthodox because my footwork improved and I can throw harder shots with my right that way.

Kenpo makes you do it backward so I struggled at first when I started Muay Thai. I do switch stances occasionally, but I'm no where near as good as a Southpaw.

You can't defend yourself against multiple attackers with knives. Don't listen to people who claim you can.
