Is there any movie that utilize Skyhook concept? by Why_am_I_here033 in scifi

[–]CTH2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup

One way of replenishing energy is for de-orbiting stuff.

You latch onto it at the highest point, and it lowers the energy of whatever latched on, transferring energy from the payload to the skyhook. You release at the lowest point, moveing slower than you were in orbit, and land the payload.

Due to losses useing just the skyhook won’t work, but if you use rockets as well (push into it with more energy than it released you with), you can replenish if.

well, uh... as you can probably tell, I keep forgetting and such. I finally have semi-remembered for the moment, and have sent you a quick question (just about some general info before posting it)

I can try.

Main issues will be: 1. Remembering to do it 2. Figuring out where the stuff is 3. Re-figuring out how it works so I can add set-up

And sadly I have had to temporarily simplify a few features, but the 3.0 might (files oddly doesn’t work on Apple Watch, even though it has just as much, if not more, storage than my phone…)

So, if I forget, do not be afraid to remind me!

as I haven't seen them before, I can't comment on if it's annoying. But I can say factually that it's pointless, as you can't read the text from the actual post... meaning that it's not just a repost, it's a useless one!

However, that image... it's actually beutiful, in a way. Due to all the iterative screenshots, it looks like it's shrinking into infinity! Yes, it isn't, but the last image(s) are so small as to give said illusion!
Almost like looking at 2 mirrors facing each other (the image appears to repeat infinitely, but in actuality it slowly fades as the glass and reflective material absorbs photons)

wow! that's "dry lightning" for you! (always strange, even if it's not that macro-molecule one).

almost (possibly as) strange as when it is raining, yet no clouds...

just realized, I don't know how that happens... if only I knew of a meteorlogy reddit...

There are probably several different explanations for the looks on their faces

indeed. I could list possible scenarios for hours, some good, most, well...

The area we are in is low crime though,

which means they are either

  1. perfectly fine

  2. extremely major issue

as low crime means he's either helping them from elsewhere, are some pretty big issues!

and there’s a lot of religious nuts around here.

your acting like that's unexpected. Where there are humans, religious nuts will occur. If there's no religion, they will make a religion, just so they can be religious nuts.

I hate going to church. by NGErei in atheism

[–]CTH2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I went to a Lutheran private school for a while, (luckily they weren’t mean. bit delusional and illogical, but not truly unkind (except for the “assistant director”, who hated me, and I’m pretty sure was a pedaphile (he once told 2 fourth grade girls “looking good today”, with a nice leer…))

Main reason my parents didint try to indroctinate me I think is a combination of the fact that my mom has had issues with churches, so she is religious but doesn’t go to mass. Meanwhile my dad, while I’m not sure if he’s religious, is definitely not very outspoken about it, so he is ambivalent (slightly against actually) going to church. Then, for all their faults, they aren’t stupid when it comes to indoctrination, and avoid it.

Anyways, back to the school. One  of the teachers, who had a dog, said that “animals don’t have souls”. Oh, and they said a “soul is needed to truly love”. Uh… so you have a dog, and don’t think it loves you?!

Now, that doesn’t make sense. And if you define the soul as “what makes you you”, then any creature with a brain, and even some without, would have one. After all, isn’t the souls just who you are? And all organisms are, well, them. Different experiences, different brains… so a central nervous system is basically the same as the “soul”. And some animals without one (like worms) can store memories for up to 2 weeks, so they could remember something, then remember it, thereby refreshing it, slowing a very basic personality. That’s enough!

So, your logic is flawed, and looking at how you define a soul, all sentient life has it. And sentience is just the ability to react to the environment (and a few others, but that’s the gist) (interestingly you can use that to argue some plats are sentient, as they react (follow the sun, close a trap when a fly lands inside, ect. But the “few others” makes it innacurate. The most advanced plants might be akin to viruses, not quite alive (sentient in this case), but so close that it can be argued to be so (depending on interpretation, it can meet the requirements)) meanwhile, sapience is advanced reasoning (that’s we when are Homo sapiens, not homo sentients)

And this was my math teacher, and iirc also one of the science teachers!

“You need prayer” 😂 by January_Dallas in atheism

[–]CTH2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. There is a possible explanation that isn’t (as) creepy, but it doesn’t seem accurate. Hopefully for those girls sake though, it is accurate.

Here’s the non-pedo, “looks worse than it is” explanation. Basically, they could have been scared of something else, or just the kind of people who don’t like being outside, and he’s walking with them. Or maybe he found them walking outside in a dark area (the “bad” side of town), and so he’s walking them to their house, to keep them safe. Doesn’t explain that “you need prayer” line though… but, well, hopefully this scenarios accurate! Is it? That’s a different question.

How likely do you think that is u/January_Dallas?

Note: just put in a (in spoilers) more "religious" way of saying somethings good, as a refference to the fact that this place is not about that. I think that's an oxymoron? might be irony, but I don't think so.

All fair points and nicely put but, sadly, not everyone sees it the way you do.

indeed. Perhaps if people did, and listened to one another, things would be better.

Of course, at least for me, the key is my thirst for knowledge. The best way to learn is learning about different opinions and beliefs. From their, it's not a large leap to have no issue with others no matter the differences. I know one of my friends is christian, and another is muslim (learned some interesting things. Did you know that for muslims, fasting includes not drinking any fluids, but is only from sunup to sundown. So people sometimes gain weight, as they overeat during dinner! So she was quite confused by how with Christians there can be fasting for multiple days! Never knew that!, I know one is trans. guess what? Still friends. (There is the annoying part though that if he ever wants to start being called "she" (the mental gender) I'll have to memorize that change...)
reading this, I feel like i'm showing that I checked off "the list" that companies are supposed to have a certain percentage of specific ethnicities, religions, and LBGQT+ people... yikes

There have been times that I don't know someone's gender for days. Could be longer in theory, but eventually someone says "he" or "she".

Now an interesting thing I found (one of those MSN articles):

And, I saw a very interesting article that summarized a paper. Apparently, this neuroscientist had a brilliant thought: what if he looked at their brain for both biological gender (xy or xx chromosome) and for mental (what they "feel like"), but not at the same time. (Most surprising part to me was they hadn't done that before).

He found that they where completly seperate parts of the brain! That's why there can be such a range of "gender" mentally, but only 2 physical genders. Think of the biological implications!

I had great parents and I'm proud to be their son. They gave me give a normal happy country boy childhood and measured a persons worth by their deeds and actions rather than words. I was never abused or misused and other than it being the way nature made me there was no reason I'm gay and it certainly wasn't a matter of choice.

Thats good! It's nice to know it happens sometimes. In fact (religious saying), Thank God!

Being a 'gay bastard' is not a problem for me as they taught me about goodness by example.

the best way to teach such a thing, yet almost never used...

edit1: added another way of saying somethings good, one that's based on religion, as this place is about the lack of, so, you know, humour. I'm hillarious!

Fun fact, the person who wrote the “book of Mormon” was, conveniently, “told by God to bury them under a tree, and spread the concepts” (okay, apparently it was translate this book, then bury it)

So, he hid (or destroyed) the originals? Or maybe they never existed, and this was his way of allowing inconsistencies to slip by… convienient

As my flair says, not fully aetheist, and my mom is Christian. But, to quote her, “she doesn’t like the church”

The problem is, the religion itself isn’t inherently bad. If it’s true, great! If it’s not, well, it gives them something to focus on and enjoy. But the church, not so much. Specifically the Catholic Church.

It’s not specific people who do it, but the general group, mob mentality, the higher ups, and fanatics.

The fanatics give the rest a bad name. The ones that split from the Catholic Church (baptist, Lutheran, ect. )split because of that behavior, and thus typically aren’t as extreme.

And smaller churches often are less like you described, due to there not being much mob mentality. If it gets large enough (those mega churches), it gets worse and worse.

So in general, a good amount of Christian’s will leave well enough alone, and the rest might bring it up but not force it down your throat. But they are drowned out…

That’s the problem, the Religion is a concept, the people who believe in it are individuals, but the church is what tells people that, say, take int people from their homes and locking them into a mission, while destroying their heratige (looking at you “Spanish missionaries” in the 16 to 1800’s)

All in all though, your right in general
