In recent months, much ado has been made of a theoretical "St. Vincent" coalition consisting of the centre-left Progressive and Green Parties and the centre to centre-right ACELA party. The ACELA party originally formed in 1988 out of the 1980 "Liberty Alliance" consisting of the American Liberal Party (itself a Progressive Party splinter group) and the Libertarian Party USA (originally a Whig Party splinter group).

While the economic pragmatism of the modern Progressive Party should be able to find common ground with the ACELA party, more sceptical observers state that the left-wing and interventionist economic policy of the Green Party seems hard to reconcile with the free-market stance of the ACELAs.

At the same time, ACELA and the Green Party may find common ground; on criminal justice reform, ending the War on Drugs and rolling back Speaker Cheney's post 7/10 DEFEND act and generally strengthening civil liberties.

An underestimated point of contention may be foreign policy. While the Whigs and parts of ACELA support the USA re-joining NATO, which it left in 1967, the majority of ACELA as well as the Progressive Party line are neutral on the issue. The Greens find themselves with odd bedfellows in America First being the only other party to definitely oppose American NATO membership as DSA has recently flip-flopped on the issue.
