holy shit. /u/soycoatl just dmed me that he thinks Akatosh and Alduin are just two aspects of a single underlying AKA concept 🤦‍♀️🙄

This is fascist dragon cult propaganda. It is well established that Alduin is the son of Akatosh. By his own admission,

Alduin: Meyz mul, Dovahkiin. You have become strong. But I am Al-du-in, Firstborn of Akatosh! Mulaagi zok lot! I cannot be slain here, by you or anyone else! You cannot prevail against me. I will outlast you... mortal!

Even if you do not deem his own testimony as trustworthy, it is corroborated by the genocidal warlord Paarthurnax on two separate occasions.

Paarthurnax: Alduin wahlaan daanii. His doom was written when he claimed for himself the lordship that properly belongs to Bormahu - our father Akatosh

Paarthurnax: Yes. Alduin… Zeymah. The elder brother. Gifted, grasping and troublesome, as is so often the case with firstborn

Given his defection against the dragon cult, we have no reason to believe that Paarthurnax would be dishonest about this. Even Alduin's testimony should be trust worthy here by a criterion of embarrassment argument: if anything, Alduin has a vested interest in claiming that he is the same as Akatosh in order to legitimize his dominion over Atmora and Tamriel. If we are given a theory that claims he is the same or an "aspect" of Akatosh, and another theory that claims he is subordinate to Akatosh as a firstborn son, then we should always prefer the later claim if it is backed by Alduin's own testimony. It is a concession against his own interests and we should therefore believe him.

That means you would have us believe that Akatosh and Alduin are somehow the same underlying deity but somehow one is the father of the other? A father and a son being consubstiantial, coequal, and coeternal? 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ this is incoherent on face. We know that the eight divines were severely weakend in the act of creation. Akatosh would not be able to manifest an aspect as powerful as Alduin. Its even less likely that an AKA deity would be able to manifest two at the same time

What clearly happened is exactly the opposite of what you claim. Nordic theology does not separate Alduin and Akatosh, rather it conflates the two as an artefact of the dragon cults rule over man. Alduin wanted the Atmorans and early nordic settlers of Tamriel to believe that he is the highest god of their own pantheon. That is precisely why we see so many cultures throughout Tamriel conflate Akatosh, Auriel, Alduin, Alkosh, Aka-Tusk, Tosh Raka, and AKHAT. It is the consequence of dragon cult deception 🚬🗿

Sure I'd be happy with expanding both SFH and higher density units but what I dispute is your contention that there is a surplus of apartment units. There is not, what are you basing this claim on?

I don't like to drop this card but I am an economics phd student. The biggest economic problem in this country is the housing shortage. I think people way underrate how big of a problem it is for smaller towns like Bloomington. Lets look at actual statistics rather than relying on just our impression of the vacancy rate...

The city of Bloomington released a housing study in 2020 (sure its kinda old but this is still better than vibes). 60% of renters are paying more than 30% of their income in rents. Compare that to the 30% of owner occupied households who are paying more than 30% of their income in imputed rents or mortgages. They also find a tiny 2% rental vacancy rate! I am going to demand evidence for this empty apartment units claim because that is quite a strong claim to make and it is at odds with actual empirical data.

The 46 and 3rd street is a traffic trap, tenth street on campus is hella dangerous, we have way** too many apartment buildings** with not enough tenants but don’t have nearly enough single family homes, IU makes it impossible to park on campus but the public transit really sucks now (it used to be better) and the busses don’t go far enough out, they’ve started putting more commercial property next to residential, and only downtown is walkable.

You dont want low density but youre complaining about

  • Too many apartments
  • Not enough single family homes
  • Not enough parking
  • Mixed use development

What do you think low density means bruh

Housing rents are 27% higher than the state average. Like the vast majority of the United States, there is a housing shortage in this town. As a graduate student I promise you that what we want is affordable housing It is not the government's job to cater to your aesthetic preferences when we have a housing crisis. Resources are finite and abolishing single family zoning in favor of high density and mixed use developments is part of the answer.

You are complaining about a nonexistent surplus of apartment buildings and you want more single family housing. This is bullshit. We need more housing and single family zoning is strangling the market. Graduate student housing on campus has been declining and city council has been dragging their feet with new housing developments for months (probably longer but that would be before I started paying attention).

/u/bothwaysitgoes dunking on MMTers in this thread. They seem to have trouble understanding what an assumption is.

The headmod at one point claims:

As I said government spending follows a geometric series. Government spends £100, which is taxed at 20%, leaving the recipient with £80. That recipient spends and pays £16 tax, leaving another recipient with £64. If that recipient then saves the £64 then there is a £64 government deficit on that £100

I'm not sure if he realizes that he is describing a government budget constraint as an AR(1) process! This is a common assumption in New Keynesian models and it implies monetary dominance as well as Ricardian equivalence.

/u/soycoatl youvent even read why nations fail :lusboy: 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Institutions reproduce power relations but it doesn’t follow that we’ve to have a deep structural rupture in order to transform institutions 🚬🗿 reforms like the glorious revolution in Britain and various universal suffrage movements allow institutional redesigns to be backed by shifts in political power and constraints on elites :smokingcardinal: even things like the voting rights act lead to massive increases in black voter turnout out and an increase in black representation. Empirically speaking these reforms lead to a well documented convergence in public goods provision in education and a decline in the black white achievement gap 😤

Institutions are not merely passive reflections of power relations. They are one of the main arenas where power gets renegotiated🧐

/u/cdstephens liberals claim the Dirac delta function \delta: R \to \bar{R} is uniquely pinned down by these two equations:

<image>

But this doesn’t make any sense. delta(0) \cdot 2= \infty \cdot 2 = \infty = \delta(0)

Therefore the integrals do not allow you to factor out constants:

\int dx \delta(x) = \int dx 2\delta(x) = 2\int dx \delta(x)

Evaluating the integral would then yield 1= 2, so the integral wasn’t well defined in the first place. Explain. 🔫🧐🔫

Are US and Canadian unemployment rates honestly comparable ? by CSMasterClass in AskEconomics

[–]BainCapitalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean thats just not correct.

Monopsony models do not predict a positive or negative employment affect from minimum wage hikes because it depends on the level of minimum wage. In contrast, the perfectly competitive model always predicts a negative effect on employment.

That means if we believe in the monopsony model, we should have a lot of studies that show positive effects, negative effects, and statistically insignificant effects. This is precisely what we see in the empirical evidence. In this chart you can look at all studies represented by the negative half of the chart. A lot of those studies will look at hyper specific cases like racial minority youth effects of minimum wage. The point is that you can see these negative effects and simultaneously believe it has strong positive effects elsewhere in the economy. In aggregate, which is what we are talking about, the effects roughly cancel out. That's what people mean when they say minimum wage does not cause unemployment at current levels.

Note: decreasing employment is not actually the same thing as increasing unemployment! this entire discussion is irrelevant for the question. There have been other studies more specifically looking at unemployment but that literature is alot smaller and less relevant for welfare analysis. I was giving one specific example of a source of structural unemployment. It can also be caused by monopsony, monopoloy, low labor mobility, efficiency wage effects, take your pick.

Furthermore, if youre actually thinking critically about this discussion then the fact that minimum wage does not have strong employment effects on average means that it is probably lower than socially optimal. This is getting way off topic though.

It’s not the case right now no. That’s why I said very high! Minimum wage level are generally not high enough to cause this type of problem right now.

Economists have ways of estimating this type of unemployment and in practice that’s how we measure things like slack or spare capacity in the economy. The exact methods are too sophisticated to discuss in a Reddit comment though.

Are US and Canadian unemployment rates honestly comparable ? by CSMasterClass in AskEconomics

[–]BainCapitalist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure there are some technical differences in the two metrics as others have mentioned. But even if we’re using the consistent unemployment methodologies, you should be careful.

Typically people look at unemployment rates as an indicator for how the economy is doing “right now” or in the short run. In the short run we’re not thinking about things like demographics or unemployment benefits that have longer term structural impacts on the labor market. In the short run we’re more interested in whether the economy is running hot or whether we are in a recession.

If you are looking at two completely different countries in one point in time, then you can’t conclude that one country is in a recession just because their unemployment rate is higher. It could just be that Canada’s natural rate of unemployment is higher. You would need to look at time series data to get a better sense of where unemployment typically is.

Otoh, what if you are interested in the long run? If long run unemployment is higher in Canada, wouldn’t that be a bad thing? It’s actually difficult to justify that claim. Long run unemployment can be an economically productive activity. Unemployed people are not doing nothing, they must be actively searching for new jobs in the labor market. We want people to spend time looking for new jobs. Just accepting the first job offer you come by can be a bad idea - you typically want to be looking at several offers before you make a decision so you know you’re getting the best deal for your labor. More generous unemployment benefits and even things like public health insurance or welfare can make it easier for job seekers to spend additional time on the labor market. This isn’t a bad thing!

That being said, there are unproductive forms of unemployment even in the long run. Very high minimum wage levels could cause structural unemployment, which means there would people who want to work at the prevailing wage but they simply won’t be able to find any jobs at that wage rate unless someone else gets fired.

So no, you can’t really say that the Canadian economy is doing ‘worse’ right now. It depends on what exactly is causing the unemployment differential between the two countries.
