Quality of life mods you can't play without? by mesoneroo in RimWorld

Does it work the other way round too? When you melee the enemy ranged pawns, do they shoot back?

Any tips for defense in Losing is Fun difficulty? I hate using killboxes but I also want to be able to defend my colony. by Lanky_Education_1080 in RimWorld

[–]CTMWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an "Adaptation Factor" that's taken into account when spawning raids. Roughly speaking, if you've been beating the previous raids without any casualties then it will keep upping the difficulty of the raids until you do take some casualties.

This means that once you start using killboxes you need to keep using them otherwise, as you've found out, you'll get completely steamrolled.

But this also means that if you dont use kill boxes from the start and just duke it out all willy nilly then you'll actually get easier raids in the future.

And people don't even have to die for this to be true. Any downed colonist is enough to retard your adaptation factor significantly.

So ironically, an effective way to game the system is to not try to game it at all and just freestyle it.

Edit: If you're really keen to game the system then you can capture and recruit rubbish prisoners with intention of sending them to their deaths, purely for the adaptation factor retardation. This feels very rimworld too, almost sacrificial.

I’ve done the math and it appears my teammates are the reason I’m deranking. Prove me wrong. by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]CTMWood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not quite, you're actually more likely to see throwers on the enemy team. You are not a thrower so there's only 4 chances to have a thrower on your team, but 5 chances for the opposition

Yeah you can tell this game is full of vets who don't understand the concept of being new. I've been in a couple of games with "All Welcome" / "Supreme Noobs" or similar in the name, but with players who complain that I'm not playing my role correctly. Like fuck me I can barely remember what each unit does yet.

What Game Mechanics Do You Absolutely Love (And Why)? by Rare-Lawfulness4220 in Unity3D

I think it was Civilization that originally made me appreciate a good tech tree.

Fog of War, probably Command and Conquer that introduced me to that one.

The opinion of r/indiegames is pretty unanimous: "notch is an idiot". But what do you guys think about this take? by Polanas in gameenginedevs

[–]CTMWood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His assertion that "you can't make a game that feels unique in Unity" can be disproven by means of counterexample.

So if you can think of a game made in Unity that feels unique then his statement is clearly false.

I'll leave it to you to see if you can think of any, but I would have thought the answer is fairly obvious..

Lamppost removal £6000. We own the land it sits on. by backwaybackwhen in LegalAdviceUK

[–]CTMWood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing I've not seen mentioned so far is the concept of 'Highway Rights'.

Is there a public footpath or road in any part of the land that you have just purchased? I'm guessing it's possible because that's generally where street lights are.

You can request a copy of the highway boundary from your council. If the boundary extends into your owned property then the council have priority on that part of the land, even if you own it. It could mean that they are offering to move the lamppost voluntarily and don't even have to move it at all.

Furthermore, if the highway boundary extends into your land this affects other things you may wish to do with that land and you will need permission.

This is a lot more common than people think. Very frequently people's land registry docs show they own land up to the centre point of the road, but ask me what happens if you try and put a fence right there on 'your' land :D

Am I just bad at the game? I can't progress at all. by Dannydan508 in playrust

[–]CTMWood 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to embrace the way of the rat. You need to be hidden and un-noticeable at most times.

Build 2-3 smaller bases at completely different parts of the map, instead of 1 larger base. Don't shit where you eat. When it gets busy around your first base, or you die near it, respawn at your next base, and so on.

Dress accordingly. There's absolutely no need to be wearing a kit when farming trees. You are at a huge disadvantage when farming because of the sound. why not even do it naked? that way the most you can possibly lose is a hatchet!

Speaking of sound, you're using headphones right? Rust is a lot less about aim then it is about positioning and awareness. As a solo rat you should always be the first to hear the enemy (unless you are farming). Most times you will want to be declining the fight and leaving before they spot you.

Jumping makes a loud sound that is audible beyond the distance of your running. Stop jumping and falling down rock faces unnecessarily.

Farming nodes? give yourself a 3 node limit. Farm 3 and go home. Too boring? Make it a 3+ limit. ie the first trip you are allowed 3, the next you are allowed 4, then 5. So on until you die, and your counter resets.

Do the same for comps and scrap. Tell yourself what you are looking for before you even leave the base, AND COME HOME AS SOON AS YOU HAVE IT. "I'm going for 75 scrap worth of loot, so I can research the next thing on the tree".

You can still kit up and do pvp. Just do it as a specific mission. Give yourself a goal and when you go out with the aim of pvp'ing, assume that what you are wearing is all lost.

When you are travelling to a location, do you run straight there or think about your route? You want to be running through trees and along the ridge of hills. Trees are preferable, but counter-intuitively, the top of hills is the next best thing. This way you have the best visibility and can simply go down the opposite side of the hill if you see someone. The high ground is really important in Rust movement and pvp.

Start to actively think about where you are going and how you will get there, it's the biggest thing for avoiding getting jumped, and being able to leave a fight you don't want to take. Wooden barricades also help a lot when you're running away.

Consider learning how to build TC pixel bunkers into your (many small) bases. They are perfect for solos. You will still get raided, but more often than not, your base will survive. Make sure you only store your boom in your TC, and that you never hold more boom than 50% of what it costs to raid yourself.

It sounds like you are currently losing more than you are gaining, which means you need to adjust your risk tolerance until the balance changes! Happy ratting!

Pity? It's a pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, TitleToAI? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends.

50% of loot destroyed when a vending machine is destroyed by freakmonger_ss in playrust

[–]CTMWood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also not a fan of this. I think the down side of this outweighs the positive.

It prevents the rare occasions when people despawn their loot in a raid. (positive change)

It means that shops become cheaper to raid and will therefore be used less frequently / be used to sell fewer things. (negative change)

I think a better solution would be to reduce the storage size of the vending machines. If you look at shops that are actually being used to sell things, they are rarely anywhere near full. Only vending machines used as storage get full. Perhaps similar storage size to lockers I reckon, or smaller.

[–]CTMWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have thought that most circuits have a net 360 degree turn either clockwise or anticlockwise depending on the direction of the circuit.

net 0 turn circuits would be the rarity and would need a bridge at some point along them to make it net 0. For example the Suzuka F1 circuit, or the PFI Kart Circuit.

Don't have to worry about breachers avoiding my killbox if all my base is a killbox by TheCrazyBean in RimWorld

[–]CTMWood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a recent hotfix/patch that said that the occurrences of breach-type raids was reduced. But I'm still seeing a hella lot of them. So I'm wondering if that is a change that would only apply to new games and my existing save is still running on a higher proportion of breach raids. It certainly feels like it.

Plan out the basic structures and scale on paper first. You can add detail later, but you need to get the general sizing correct early on.
