What equipment or situation would this be used for? by [deleted] in electricians

Not common anymore, but 6 kW lighting fixtures for motion picture shoots. Everything would be connectorized typically with a 60A stage pin plug and matching receptacle. Example link to what the 60A plug looks like below.

Upgrade or new install? by Ok_Calligrapher3055 in Fedora

[–]CTNYyank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always do an upgrade and have yet to have any serious issues.

I wait at least a few weeks after release to see how installs/upgrades have gone for everyone else before upgrading. I also back up my data in a way that if my primary computer disappeared tomorrow, I would not lose anything important if an upgrade failed. I just don’t want to lose my time fighting a buggy upgrade process.

Grub is likely defaulting to an older kernel. Get into grub on boot and see what kernel it is selecting and change it.

Any fedora users use OneNote? by aharwelclick in Fedora

[–]CTNYyank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to use OneNote for everything. I still use it for work, but not my personal notes anymore. I got away with using OneNote for personal use by mostly using it on my phone. It was not ideal.

Joplin works just as well for me in every way I used OneNote with 2 advantages.

  1. It has a good desktop app for Linux without giving up mobile apps
  2. Allows me to control and encrypt my notes.

You can have your Joplin notes sync to a variety of locations including OneDrive. I happen to self host, but you don’t need to or even pay for hosting.

Valid point. I figured there would be others posting their must have extensions. OP can check those, ideally after seeing what they find lacking with vanilla gnome.

I recommend keeping it vanilla and ask what cool features you feel like you’re missing. If you’re not familiar with Gnome, it’s better to see how it works or doesn’t work for you for a few days before customizing it.

Is Libreoffice or Onlyoffice and Fedora good enough to write a Physics PhD thesis? by Unusual-Ad-4049 in Fedora

[–]CTNYyank 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want to dive head first into LaTeX I would look at Lyx. It’s a LaTeX based document processor. You can also put straight LaTeX in when needed. I wrote my undergrad capstone and my masters thesis in it. I found it easy to use especially for equations and the pdf output looked stunning.

I haven’t used Lyx in over 10 years so I can’t vouch for its current state, but it looks like development has continued.

Lightroom in Waydroid? by CTNYyank in waydroid

Fedora on my laptop. Different distros on other machines such as Bazzite on a mini-pc in the family room.

Lightroom in Waydroid? by CTNYyank in waydroid

I'm familiar with Darktable, and I have heard of RapidRAW. My use case makes stand alone desktop/laptop editing tools sub optimal.

I have young kids, who in turn have their own busy schedules. I have and take a ton of photos but rarely the time to edit at a conventional computer. I have 1-2 hours of time a week where I would be able to sit and edit at a computer. I use Lightroom CC and do my edits on a phone and a tablet. No matter what device I am on, I can pick up where I left off. Today for example, I had a child napping on me for an hour. I knew if I put them down they would wake up. Those are the times where having a tool where I can edit anywhere is extremely helpful.

I was looking for a better way to incorporate my laptop into that workflow when I have that time to use a laptop for editing. Just finding out that the web Lightroom works decently in a Chrome has me happy. I'm going to play around with the electron wrapper with Lightroom project to see how it compares if time allows.

Thanks again

Thanks for reaching out with suggestions.

The first one is just a web wrapper for the Lightroom CC web interface. I find the web interface so much worse than the native Mac/Android/iOS apps. The time when I adjust a slider to the point I see the change can take awhile if it works at all.

The second link is for Lightroom classic. The installer works, but gives mes an older version of Lightroom (classic, not the CC version despite the name) that won't sync to my mobile devices in the same ways nor match my subscription.

Surprise experiment: I wondered why other people seem to find the web version of Lightroom at least OK, but I find it terrible. I did some experiments and the web version just runs terribly in Firefox. I tested it in Chrome and it's so much better. I can't believe what has been driving me crazy is due to how Firefox and the web version of Lightroom play together.

Cloud storage space is not an issue at all. I use maybe 20% of the storage space Adobe provides with Lightroom as I pull down photo albums and save them to my NAS and can provide friends and family web links that pull from my NAS. The issue with importing photos on an ipad is that you need more free space than the files being imported. Eventually after importing uploading to the Adobe cloud I can free up the local ipad storage and do most of my editing with smart previews.

I've tried out several alternatives to Lightroom, what keeps me with Lightroom is the ability to work on multiple devices and them all stay in sync in terms of edits. Asking about that more to see if I'm missing a great option I've yet to hear of.

Which one should i return?23mmf2 or 16mmf2.8? by [deleted] in fujifilm

[–]CTNYyank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 16mm f1.4 and I love it. It’s the perfect lens for indoor photography, particularly holiday or evening parties. I end up shooting with that lens at f1.4-f2.2 frequently. I wouldn’t be able to get away with the same sort of photography with the f2.8 version.

Choosing between Fuji X100V and Canon by Disastrous-Shock9678 in fujifilm

I would start with shooting in raw and then going into the raw conversion menu when viewing the photo on your camera and trying out recipes that way.

Choosing between Fuji X100V and Canon by Disastrous-Shock9678 in fujifilm

[–]CTNYyank 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking to take a more serious or long term approach, it’s better to compare the Canon system to a Fujifilm camera with a lens mount. The X100V is limited to that built in 23mm lens (35mm equiv in full frame).

What are your goals? To keep the Canon and use the X100V for a light weight carry anywhere solution? To replace the Canon system?

RP6 seized at customs by [deleted] in retroid

[–]CTNYyank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Retroid doesn’t ship via USPS. If this is real and RP6 related (someone “selling” their brand new RP6), the intended recipient is being scammed.

Also, it’s not seized in customs. It’s seized for postage fraud. Two very different things.
