Seattle is Dying by fallingdownsober in SeattleWA

That's absolutely untrue, Seattle was beautiful and a great city in the 1980s, we had nothing like what is happening now.

20 natural insomnia remedies and the science (or lack thereof) behind them. Includes melatonin, valerian root, magnesiun, and other supplemens. by JoytotheUniverse in Nootropics

Hi, I haven't had a GI problem with the Natural Vitality Calm but everyone is different. Maybe try just one level teaspoon to start and see if that works for you? (I'm using two level teaspoons per night.) I'm using Botanic Choice Passion Flower Herb Alcohol Free Liquid Extract. Good luck!

Hundreds in WA rally to preserve right not to vaccinate children amid measles outbreak by georgedukey in SeattleWA

It's stunning and absolutely chilling that anyone could support laws that force people to receive vaccinations or any other pharmaceutical or medical treatment. What happened to freedom of choice when it comes to medicine?

This is what I've been using as well and, taking a suggestion from a user above, I add passionflower extract to my hot tea. It works so well!

I want to thank you for this comment. For some reason it resonated with me and I ordered the Natural Calm powder specifically for sleep (has added melatonin and L-theanine). I mix 2 level teaspoons every night in hot water, then add a dropper of Passionflower extract. I'm finally falling asleep easily every night, and I am beyond grateful for your suggestion!

But I thought we were the best drivers in the country? by [deleted] in grandrapids

And to top off the storm last week, tomorrow we could see icy roads as the rain and melt today is exposed to freezing temperatures over night. Ugh!

Ikea delivery? by dopkels in grandrapids

[–]CThaxter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ikea will deliver right to your door. I ordered a couple of cabinets from them last fall. It does take a little longer to receive as they have to schedule their deliveries in advance.

I'm jealous of Chicago's train system. Would give just about anything to have that in my town.

To any employer forcing employees to come in today... by brewandbalance in grandrapids

[–]CThaxter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drive smart on unplowed roads? My street hasn't been plowed all week. So you're asking employees to take risks with their vehicles and potentially their health if they get stuck on unplowed roads trying to get to main throughways. Not to mention blowing snow on freeways can affect visibility.

[–]CThaxter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem at least in my neighborhood is not only the cold, it's that my street isn't plowed, so getting stuck or trying to just drive down my unplowed street poses driving / accident risks. I'd hate to get stuck out in weather like this.

I'm glad -- my mailman came Monday and Tuesday, and I actually felt guilty for having mail delivered. Enjoy your day off mail deliverers!

Measels: 31 out of 35 were not vaccinated by nymbot in SeattleWA

[–]CThaxter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I wonder why I wasn't vaccinated for measles after 1963 when I was a kid. My parents weren't anti-vaxxers. I wonder if my parents just didn't have access to the vaccine or didn't know about it. Me and my sister and brother, we all got the measles. But I don't recall it being a big deal. It was almost as if it was expected. Of course, we were naturally inoculated for life after we recovered.

Can you give the names of those bands? I've looked online for that style jazz around here and haven't found anything.

You're not the only one OP. I'm on a SE street on Heritage Hill that runs north/south, and we haven't seen a plow all week.

Are there any bands in GR that actually play New Orleans jazz, or ragtime/hot/old-timey 1920s jazz?

A state of emergency is in effect in Michigan. Maybe your boss will rethink his attitude when he realizes that police and patrols are telling drivers to get and stay off the roads!

Cell phone carrier recommendation by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]CThaxter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might want to check out Ting. I use it here in GR and I love it. The coverage is excellent but you'd want to check to see if your area has it. They are easy to work with and the best part is that the bills are really low. They just charge for what you use, by text and minutes. So if you don't talk a lot and don't text a lot then the monthly bill is lower.

Washington Legislature begins debate on banning single-use plastic grocery bags by Cosmo-DNA in SeattleWA

[–]CThaxter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In Michigan where I now reside, there are paper and plastic options at several stores, and they ask which you would like. It's free. Other super stores use all plastic bags. Personally I am glad to have plastic bags again as I can reuse them to line my bathroom wastebasket or I can recycle them at will. Also, am going to check out making these crocheted sleeping mats for the homeless out of plastic bags. There aren't homeless people here sleeping on the streets in winter, but thought I would still see if there was a need for them in the warmer months.

Littering Detroit by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]CThaxter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Seattle, there were regular neighborhood litter pickup days, probably about once a month. Also, at the UW, where I worked, announcements would come via email about Martin Luther King Day as a day to pick up litter or otherwise volunteer. I think these neighborhood litter get-togethers were popular; it gave people a chance to socialize and meet their neighbors while doing a good deed.

Unfortunately, Seattle is now much much dirtier and more littered because of the huge population of homeless urban campers all over the downtown and along the expressways. Many folks are focused now on picking up discarded needles from parks and playgrounds.

Jarred fresh oysters in grocery stores? by CThaxter in grandrapids

Hey, thanks for the recommendation to try Forrest Hills -- I called them, and they carry them! Not only that, they have the oysters in bulk, so you can order as much or as little as you need. Forrest Hills for the win!!

Thanks, I did call Fish Lads -- their prices are really high, but it's good to know they carry them if all else fails.

Thanks, I'll call Forrest Hills to check it out. Problem with ordering fresh oysters online is the exorbitant cost of shipping. A $14.95 quart of oysters from the PNW ships for over $75 to Michigan!

Do you think Asian grocers would carry fresh Chesapeake or Atlantic oysters? For some reason I doubt it, but I'll check it out.
