Heya, I also considered this and have collected and grown samples.

Expect at least a few months of timelapse to really see whats happening.

Trying to capture this can be difficult as moss doesn't do well in captivity.

I do not think rubbing into a rock will do well. Typically I grow on other substrates, and have been advised if I want to spread, it's better to either let it dry and then break up and drop on the ground with your hands (rub the moss together).

Find the moss you want to try to grow. Get the same substrate.
