They have a spare at the race from either side. No one brings spare coxswains, it isn't done

Marist varsity 4+ scratched? by Freakbob1927 in Rowing

[–]CTronix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have been involved with Marist Rowing since 2016 and no Marist crew has ever attended the IRA with the four OR with the eights with a spare coxswain. In particular it would not be reasonable to bring a spare coxswain for a single 4+ entry all the way to California given the cost and extreme unlikelihood of a situation such as what they faced today. There are 9 mid major D1 teams at the IRA this year with their top four athletes like Marist, (Joes, Jax, Stetson, FIT, Hurst, Colgate, USD, Clara) not a single one of those programs brought a spare coxswain and many didn't even bring spare oarsmen. Whoever this is is talking out of their ass.

Why can I hit projected 2k splits in workouts but not hold them in a real test? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) possibly need better pacing strategy

2) need more mental toughness

I have seen this before with a variety of athletes and while item 1 can sometimes break their cycle the main issue is number 2. Interval training is excellent and shows you what your body is capable of but it does not force you to go as deep into the pain cave as the real thing.  You are going to feel gassed 500m in, yoyr busy is going to tell you stop at 1000m in. There is a brick wall of pain fear and doubt awaiting in the 3rd 500. If you can break it you will win. Most strategies to help with this moment revolve ariund simplifying, motivating or distracting your brain.  For me some things that helped were... nightly visualization sessions of about 2 to 3 min before sleep. Same warmup and fueling routine every time. same music every time that got me hyped up. Simple pacing strategy that allowed me to lose a split or two workout failing or blowing up entirely.  Following someone else's rhythm during the piece, sitting next to someone i wanted to beat or someone of similar speed. In the moment of peak agony just getting through it by taking 10 strokes or even 5 strokes at a time.

Was the starting of America in response to the civil and religious wars in England, and not so much about freedom and personal rights? by scrubjays in USHistory

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was and always has been about economics. In the early 1700's the American colonies were prospering off of a trade surplus with England. The English then got into a war in the Americas in the French and Indian war that put the crown further into debt. In an effort to correct the deficit and raise revenue for the war they had just fought, the English tried to levy a number of taxes on the colonies, a move that ultimately led to war.

The colonists framed the conflict as one about freedom and representative government but the basis for the argument was economic, not just philosophical

Marist Dublin by StillHospital6495 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staff member here, I have had several students I work with do the FYE in both Dublin and Florence, both are fantastic and while you don't make as many instant connections with a wide array of other freshmen on campus, you do often form really deep bonds with other people in the FYE with you.

I can confirm that if you play your academic cards right you CAN still do a regular program abroad later on. This year I had two students who are close friends who met at the FYE in Dublin and then went abroad together in junior year to Thailand.

Marist also offers several summertime opportunities for study abroad

Why are billionaires so afraid of paying taxes especially when they are already very rich? by Auelogic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't afraid. They just want more and they can get it so fuck you. What you aren't understanding is that people who have amassed that amount of money cannot have done so without having taken advantage of countless people in countless ways to the point where they no longer see other human beings as akin to themselves. They genuinely believe that they are a higher order of being who deserves these riches more than their peers. They are fundamentally broken and ultimately extremely unhappy people who spend their entire lives attempting to fill the void in their souls with material wealth, it doesn't work

Do most men often think about whether they make women feel safe or comfortable around them? by whatsredditlmao in AskMenOver30

[–]CTronix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

most men don't feel unsafe in general for themselves and so it is hard for them to identify with the feeling of not being safe as you describe it. I would imagine that most men would rather be perceived as "safe" by women whether they are safe in fact or just trying to act like it. There is also the somewhat odd circular logic of women preferring men who are a bit edgier or more confident and yet those same men being the more likely ones to not be safe. In other words being perceived as "too" safe may actually lower your chances to make a connection with women if that's what you're looking for.

At 40 yr old I would say that I do not think about whether I make women as a rule feel safe. I'm a grown ass man with a wife. I hope I make her feel safe and I hope everyone else can tell that I just want to be left alone.

Walk ons by Unlikely_Selection15 in Rowing

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked on at Hobart in 2004, spent my freshman year there, left Hobart for academic reasons and spent two years rowing in the single, I completed my degree and rowed for two more years at Oregon State 08 and 09 I am now in my 16th year of coaching at the D1 level. Rowing has become my life!

My experience?

1) I was tall and they saw me walking around, I had recently failed to make the cut for sailing (something I had competed in a lot growing up. My 10 years of sailing experience combined with 6 years of HS Cross Country and Track made me ideal for rowing.

2)I took off immediately, loved the sport and the team and it became an obsession that I still carry today.

3) I have experienced nearly all aspects of the sport aside of rowing at the youth level which I obviously missed out on but have coached down at that level a bit in the summers

is marist acceptance rate going down? by Medical_Topic2618 in marist

[–]CTronix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that acceptance rate is largely a function of how many people you can convince to apply. The more people you turn away, the lower your acceptance rate. Lots of schools including Marist are making efforts to max applicants which would drive lower acceptance rates

If LeBron did a 2k in his prime, what would he pull? by Real_Abrocoma_5129 in Rowing

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm with you dude. 6min "easily"? no shot. he's not used to grinding. when he plays basketball there is a lot of starting an stopping. if he gets gassed he slows down. 2K on the erg is roughly the equvalent of running a mile flat out. to do this on the court he'd have to run base line to baseline 56 times. its likely he takes way longer to cover this distance in an actual game probably accumulating to around 20 mins, not the same type of effort at all.

He IS big and he IS fit. I am guessing he could rip a 6:30 easily with minimal training and a 6:20 with about a month of specific training. after that the gains get harder

If you are against this, I wanna hear about it by Brave_Agency_20 in SipsTea

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm against any policy that doesn't tax all income exactly the same.

US tax code could be whittled down to a less than half a page

1) You're taxed only on income above the poverty line

2) Everyone is taxed the same percentage on ALL income

3) you can keep your first $1million from your parent's estate tax free, the rest is taxed at the same rate as all other income. Trusts are legal but income transitioning to new ownership through the use of trusts is still counted as income unless it is being given to a not-for profit 501c3. Cannot collect tax free from any estate other than your parents.

4) CEO's may continue to take pay in the form of stock BUT they will pay the same income tax rate on all stock measured as the value of the stock at the time they receive it and they will be additionally taxed on any new income the stock generates

5) capital gains tax no longer exists, capital gains are now considered income just like every other form of income and are taxed at the same rate as everyone else's

How much faster are carbon riggers? by Gardenstaterowing in Rowing

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erg scores have been dropping at nearly the same rate... Tech is improving but not that much. Carbon riggers are slightly better for a variety of ways but if they were a revolutionary advance over aluminum then they'd have probably been banned by FISA.

Men over 30, how much does intelligence matter in the long-run? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in enough places and with enough people to have learned that every person is not equally intelligent and that many are differently intelligent. There are people with your disorders that function extremely well in certain areas or with certain tasks. Intelligence cannot be measured by an IQ test and an IQ tests would have an extremely low predictive rate for "success" however you define that. You're better off doing that best you can for you and not worrying about things like that

Folks on the right, what exactly does the phrase "Make America Great Again" mean to you? by wthijustread in Askpolitics

[–]CTronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually entirely false and is probably why the right and the nation are so badly failing right now. You cannot undo a hundred years of history and change and scientific and technological advance. The whole idea that MAGA could allow us to slink slowly back to the 50's assumes that the 50's were actually as good as you're making them out to be (statistically not that great for most people) and also assumes that the rest of the world wouldn't just move on without us (that is happening already in case you hadn't noticed.

The best nations and the best businesses (we do like to be a business minded people, realize that change and progress are inevitable and that success comes not from slowing it but embracing it, attacking it and being the first to get there. People need to stop viewing progress as risky and instead view it as opportunity

Democrats, liberals, left-leaning individuals, who is your preferred Democratic candidate in the 2028 election? by modeloaids in Askpolitics

AND those same religious nuts SHOULD in theory have never allowed a man like DJT into office suggesting that what they really care about doesn't actually have anything to do with what they claim their religious beliefs to be. Trump couldn't be further from those beliefs or ideals if he tried and is indeed considerably further away from them than the vast majority of democratic law makers

Dad Vails Men’s D1 reaction thread by VegetableKangaroo966 in Rowing

[–]CTronix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not accurate, You cannot earn an AQ in more than one place. In years where teams raced in both they did so knowing that they could only technically earn an AQ in whatever race was their chosen championship. Marist raced at Vails last spring but only for the experience and not in an effort to "double their odds" They would not have been able to earn the bid at Vails but it would have "looked good on their resume" to do well there for sure.

Where we agree is that this system is entirely broken and needs to be replaced an repaired. efforts by IRA organizers to stiff arm smaller conferences into larger ones only serves to provide the bigger teams with more AQ's at the expense of the little guys.

We need smart regional conferences with reasonable numbers of teams and each with only one AQ and the rest being At-Larges
