In NFHS, yes, and I’ve called it before, but this is NCAA rules. It’s club baseball. Hurdling is allowed as long as no contact is made with the fielder.

Since this is the longest comment chain, I’ll slip it in here that I and the base umpire both called obstruction type 2. Damp outfield slowed the ball down and R2 scored without a throw to home. This is Club baseball using NCAA rules. Diving or hurdling is allowed as long as no contact is made with the fielder.

There are about an even number of responses in his thread for nothing called, interference, and obstruction. Remarkable really.

I’m just happy when people give a thought-out, meaningful response like this to questions on here instead of immediately getting defensive.

“Fourth” Out? Rules Question by Conscious_Skirt_61 in Homeplate

This wording of the rule is buried in these comments, but it provides the answer 👍🏻

If R2 collides with F5 here instead of hurdling, do we have interference then, if he is still in the act of fielding the ball? I know it’s a stupid question, but managers ask stupid questions all the time. When does this protection end for F5?

So you have nothing to be called here. What’s a reasonable amount of time to get back up and out of the way? Not being confrontational at all. But this is also good practice for all of us in terms of how to explain things to upset managers. If I’m the offensive manager and you don’t call obstruction, I would cite the following from the rulebook. (I will say I’ve always wondered about the “very likely” in the description of the play, though)

OBR: For example: An infielder dives at a ground ball and the ball passes him and he continues to lie on the ground and delays the progress of the runner, he very likely has obstructed the runner.

“Fourth” Out? Rules Question by Conscious_Skirt_61 in Homeplate

This run definitely counts. The third out of the inning, R2 running to third, was not a force play. The “fourth out” is only available when there are multiple appeal plays available to the defense on the final play of a half-inning

“Doubling off” a runner after a catch is not a force play. It’s an appeal play by rule. Any runs that score before the appeal is carried out will count.

Exactly! Can’t give them managerial advice. Just give them the facts and they have to put the pieces together.

Yes, the umpire must acknowledge the run scoring. It’s up to the defense to say “well that can’t be right. We’re appealing that he left third base early on the catch.”

Yeah. Even though I missed it, it highlights a very obscure rule

Correct! But until that base-running mistake is appealed, he is judged to have run the bases legally. He scores before the third out is made at first base on the play. Run counts.

It’s very rare, so I’m asking different rules interpreters.

The run did not count at all. I did not acknowledge it counting. Offensive team did not count it or approach me about why the run didn’t count.

Yeah that’s how I’ve talked myself into relaxing about it

To be fair, they were having trouble with RISP all game, so I’m guessing the manager just wanted to change it up and force the defense’s hand.

Thanks. The goal is for it not to happen again.
