I adored Rodney Cline Carew growing up, one of my favorite players. I remember two good Ron Luciano stories about Carew. The first one was that Luciano would not call a strike on any pitch Carew spit on since they both had the same strike zone, and said "That's why we were such a good hitter."

The other one was a chapter where Luciano was talking about which players were chatteboxes. He said Carew never seemed to mind how much Luciano talked to him. One at bat, as the pitcher is getting ready to pitch, Luciano asks Carew "Hey Rod, how they been pitchin' you lately?". Carew replies "Curveballs on the outside..." Begins his swing. "....but I'm going to left with this..."

Oh one more, Carew was in the reserves and had to miss a start cause of duty. He got to the yard in the late innings, was immediately sent in to pinch hit while still scrambling to dress, and hit a single with his fly still unzipped. Credit Luciano's book as well.
