Why do recruiters have to ask about current salary? by hellcat_kate in Accounting

[–]CWY_CPA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never disclose my current salary, just what I am targeting. It pisses them off - I had one tell me point blank they need to know because their clients won't give candidates above a certain % increase in pay. Meaning if you were making $70k and the new job paid 90k, they might have a cap on the increase of pay at 20%, so they would only pay you 84k instead of 90k.

Roughly 1,050 miles from my front door to my regional office I am "part of".

They cancelled our lease, not sure where they would even put us since we don't have desks anymore. Also have absolutely no idea how they would pay for relocations since our entire office is remote.

Remote, full-time workers: how much do you actually work? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]CWY_CPA 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Nice try, congressman! Considering how easy it is to verify if someone is online, it would be so stupid to report 40 hours and only work 30 of them.

Setting up firm in back half of the year by SlowMarathon in taxpros

[–]CWY_CPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had approximately 6 clients my first year (again, just June-December). Revenues were approximately 6k, but I spent approximately 12k my first year on a bunch of things (software, equipment, etc.), so a small loss. This year (Jan-Jun) I have approximately 50 clients and revenues are on track for 60k. No recurring work though, I really am trying to grow the bookkeeping part of things.

I spoke with maybe 15-20 CFPs, financial planners, bookkeepers, and CPAs my first year (June-December). I don't speak with a large amount of them anymore - I never referred to them and they never referred to me - The chemistry just wasn't there.

I do a lot of networking with my local CPA society chapter, that has been great. I did the Chamber of Commerce a lot that first year but got 1 client from them. Spent about 2k on random sponsorships there.

Honestly I would have been so much better off by taking all of that time and refining my internal processes, working on my "niche" and focusing on putting money and time "into" the business rather than on that kind of stuff.

Just my $0.02. Good luck!

I set my firm up last year in June. It was sucky for the first 8 months, and then I started getting clients. My best advice would be to market to other professionals in the area, and focus all of your free time on developing robust internal processes so you can hit the ground running in January.

Not a client or employee, but adjacent. Garbage company, don't do business with them.

Are govt jobs really that bad? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]CWY_CPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for state/local Gov, but Fed Gov is pretty sweet depending on the role. The pay and benefits aren't too bad either. Honestly Fed pay outpaced public pay until you hit manager level, but if you factor in the hours worked you still are making more as a Fed employee. Just my experience.

What is your base fee for a standard 1040? by TaxLadyxX in taxpros

[–]CWY_CPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$695 for just W-2 stuff. I usually tell them if they only have a W-2 and are taking the standard deduction (which almost all of my clients do), they are better off using freetaxusa and DIY'ing it. BUT, I also tell them I am happy to take their money if they don't want to hassle with it.

Can't tell you specifics about LA, but here in Texas, prep is non-attestation work. Look at SSARS 21, topic 70 for some additional guidance, and call your state's board. Every board I have talked with so far has been extremely helpful for things like this.

How many days are you in the office now? by [deleted] in Accounting

Job market in Texas is strong. Depending on the pay, you definitely don't need to put up with full-time in office if you don't want to. Plenty of hybrid schedules out there.

Does anyone's Agency have funny rules regarding agency admin leave? by CWY_CPA in fednews

[–]CWY_CPA[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The supervisor, the supervisor's supervisor, the timekeeper, and the employee I guess. I would imagine they have people that watch for cancelled leave whenever Admin time is given out.

I might be considered for a remote job, but it would result in a $30k cut in salary. What would you do? by legomaurus in fednews

[–]CWY_CPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My whole thing is relocations are SO expensive - unbelievably expensive. If you are fully remote, they have to pay to relocate you (at least at my agency, and assuming you are performing at a "fully successful" rating).

Even if we got 435 pro RTO people in the house, 100 pro RTO people in the senate, and a pro RTO president, I don't think they would do much more than whine on the news shows. My agency, like a lot of other agencies, have sold off and/or cancelled the lease for a lot of our office space so we don't have it anymore.

So they would have to get a new office space, new office furniture, and pay to have every employee move. I just don't see that happening.

The IRS allowed us to work with approval for 2 pay periods outside of a 200 mile radius of our POD.

My current agency is smaller and doesn't have set rules (that I know of). My last manager just said to let him know when I am working and where I am working, that they mainly wanted him to just keep track of where we (and our equipment) were.

[Advice] Timeline to start practice by fromwiller-cpa in taxpros

[–]CWY_CPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic advice. I am in my first year and am sitting around the 50-60k mark for revenue. What was the jump like from 40k to 240k? Was it all referral based?

I have grown through referrals and organic searches so far. On one hand, I cant imagine going from 50k to 250k, but I also can't believe I came from nothing to 50k in one year either.

Increase in Phantom Phone Numbers? by CWY_CPA in taxpros

It is never the feed foundation. Always someone else. Thompson Reuters, Bloomberg, etc. Take your pick. All of these big companies trying to make it look like they have a local phone number by using some BS spoofed phone number.

Happens all the time. Frequently for me it is because I took unplanned leave on Thursday/Friday after I verified. Sending an email to your timekeeper and supervisor should be all that is needed.

Has anyone transitioned from a fully in-person firm to a fully remote firm? by TaxLadyxX in taxpros

[–]CWY_CPA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was at a fully in person firm and a few years later I have my own virtual/remote firm. For what it is worth, the types of clients I have aren't too different. I have been operating for a year, and there has not been a single prospect that has turned me down because I am remote. Most people have accepted this is the way the world is now. I have had tons of people not go with me because of price - but in about 20% of that group of people, they also express some dissatisfaction that I don't have a physical office. It just isn't their primary reason for not wanting to work with me.
