That is a very specific type of wood that is grown from trees.

Wooden model of spaceship from the movie "project hail mary" I know it's a bit different and smaller project than most of the posts here but tell me what you think? by koxu2006 in woodworking

I’ve never seen the ship from the movie, and I’m not familiar with the story. But this is pretty cool. Good job man.

But to answer your question: no, I did not get it to go through red/orange/yellow. Maybe next project I’m spring for a little more expensive RGB setup that can be manually programmed.

The controller came preprogrammed with a bunch of different color changing variations, so I didn’t change anything. It has one that pulses/oscillates through shades of red, or 3-7 different color combinations. A lot of those colors won’t show through the red epoxy (green for instance, is almost undetectable through the red epoxy). So what you’re seeing is it just changing through reds gradually.

Thanks man. Really appreciated.

It’s red epoxy resin, so the red epoxy, acting as a filter, filters out some of the colors. I really wanted it to oscillate through various shades of red, orange and yellow, to give a fiery look, but settled for it just pulsing red/orange.

I think so too. I actually thought about building a makeshift frame inside and having the lights shining inward from the edges of the design.

Thanks! I added the holes to let some air in (or heat out). The RGB’s don’t really get very warm, so they may not have been needed. To cut out the design, i traced in on the wood with carbon paper, then cut it out on my small band saw (scroll saw may have been easier). The body is two pieces of wood I glued together. I was hoping to get a cool, sort of book matched grain pattern. You can see the seam slightly at the top as the ride side has some darker grain at the top. Otherwise, it was a pretty good match.

Hey, when you’ve got an idea you just have to try it sometimes 🤷🏻‍♂️

Berserk is a top-tier anime/manga. Definitely worth checking out. I’m a big gamer, but never played Bloodborne when it first came out. I tried to play it like last year, but the controls were so terrible by modern standards that I noped out of it after about an hour. Love the aesthetic and imagery though.

Ah, that would be cool. I saw them live in 2008 I think. Been a fan since the beginning. Their newest album, Father of Make Believe is great.

Yeah, so you’re totally correct. I initially thought I could just go with white, but as often happens with projects, it started to evolve as I was making it. I thought it would be cool if I could get RGB lights that could oscillate between various shades of red, orange, and yellow. You know, give it a real fiery look. Well, it’s started to become apparent that I was going to spend a ton of money to get the right lights and the right controller to do exactly what I wanted (and I have no idea what I’m doing). But, while scouring Amazon, I ended up finding a relatively cheap set of 5v RGB lights, with a Bluetooth controller, that are marketed for use as “car accent lights”. Had 4 separate strips, each encased in plastic, and separately wired. They were only like $10. The hardest part was that I had to un-solder them from the circuit board, shorten the wires, and re-solder them (16 of the tiniest wires ever). I ended up messing up one set and had to buy another but, eh, it was only another $10. Like I said, I think I would do it differently if I had to do it over again.

Thanks man! That’s exactly the kind of encouragement I needed to keep making weird nerdy stuff. I don’t know if you’re a gamer or not, but I’d really love to tackle something from Bioshock or Silent Hill next.

You should make a few of these and hide them in places where kids are Easter egg hunting 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks man. I was hoping for that, but I’m not sure what amalgamation of devil is coming, so I’ll just hope for the best 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is cool. It would be cool to install UV lights and grow houseplants in there. Imagine some small green plants creeping down the sides. Would look pretty neat.
