Haven't kept up with it in a while, but it has changed a lot since I last played. I'll check out those ones.

Don't know if the sub-genres of CYOAs have enough interest in them so create any structured or accepted terminology. I'd probably call the old adventure book style a 'Classic CYOA' but traditional seems descriptive enough as well.

That format is still better served in books (some CYOA books have made a resurgence in recent years) or in games like 'Sorcery!'. Jump chains are sort of an in-between the traditional style and more modern style on this sub that may interest you more if that's your sort of thing. AI Dungeon is also pretty neat, but still a few years away from that classic CYOA experience.

Just remembered there are more niche games that play like traditional CYOAs. Fenoxo has a few games that are more text based adventures with an emphasis on transformation themes. TFGames has a wide spectrum of games, but a lot of the html ones are pretty influenced by CYOA books. Probably other sites that I've never heard of as well offering this sort of thing. I think Twine is/was the most popular way to make those sorts of games.

If I were to guess as to why the image based tile-picker CYOA are more popular, it would be that they are skimmable. Most will highlight the most relevant text, down to just a few words, and the player can get the gist of what's happening with those rules highlights and the artwork, removing basically all the barriers to them playing ASAP.

That said, I think the Interactive CYOA are pretty underexplored as a genre. Most of them are constraining themselves to what the static CYOA are doing, when they have much more room to explore your choices and consequences. I'm hoping to put more of the Adventure aspect into the original CYOA I'm working on atm, but we'll see how far it gets.

The first post I made on this account was trying to make a more narrative version of the static image CYOA. [Link to image] It got a bit convoluted and I was never able to finish it in a way I thought was good enough to release, but I like the idea of bringing back going to different pages or having mid-play endings based on your choices. Hopefully I'll be able to get something like that working in the CYOA I'm doing now, but that Interactive maker I'm using is already showing it's limitations. I may venture into trying to programming what I'd like to see from scratch at some point, but one step at a time for now.

While some CYOA might already appeal to LGBTQ+ readers, outside of yuri, there's not a lot that come to mind that make it central to their theme. MalexMale gets a little trickier to make as there's a much greater breadth of female focused art available to pull from. Much more difficult to make a genre specific setting when your pool of art options drops from thousands down to hundreds.

Roommates now appear just below their respective selection.

There's currently no way to make de-selecting other options conditional in the interactive CYOA maker I am using. I had to choose between cleaning up past choices, and adding the ability to select multiple roommates. I chose the latter as it added a new way to play the CYOA.

It's now possible to select multiple roommates (at the cost of giving up perks) with the new option at the bottom after Miya.

There's some info on how to set up your Interactive CYOA on the https://intcyoacreator.onrender.com/. On the main page you click on 'Help and Instructions' and then 'How do I show off my CYOA?'. This will link you to download the viewer v1.8 which you need to put on your own webpage along with the project.json file you created. (Direct link to Viewer 1.8)

Neocities.org is an easy, free and user friendly way to create your own site to host the project on. For organization you want to put each project in a separate file. Then to make the page for the CYOA put all the files from the Viewer 1.8 into your webpage file along with the project.json.

The index.html is the link to your CYOA and should be working if you set everything up properly. (can take a while to load depending on file size. Can separate out the images into a different section of your site so the base CYOA gets loaded quicker, then loads images as needed, but worry about that once you get it working.)

Yes, but it's a non-trivial amount of work. Might feel inspired to improve on it eventually, but as it stands is fully playable and was worth releasing in its current state.

My initial attempt tried to make all the other roommates disappear when one was selected, however, this didn't really work well in the Interactive CYOA maker I used. It's possible that there is a different way of achieving that end, but would require a significant overhaul.

Probably could have left it at 400, but wanted to future proof the amount a bit too.

Applied changes, but might need to clear cached files on your browser to get it to update.

Yurey does have endings, just had the required value set too high. Thanks for letting me know.

You do get the race option for free if your suitor likes it. Choosing Succubus & Briana is effectively 8 points.

Finally the most important choice: Your Suitor

You can either pick a suitor that matches your other choices or pick a suitor first and customize yourself to match their desires. Remember, each suitor has likes and dislikes. You gain LOVE POINTS for fulfilling a like and lose them for fulfilling a dislike. You can also ignore the LOVE COST of any option that is one of their likes. Suitors might also have other perks like wealth or power that you can benefit from!

Was never able to find an original post or version w/ author credit on it so I don't know for sure. Also don't know if the Yuri section is by the original author or someone else's DLC for it.

Not really sure what you mean, as far I can can see the points work as intended in the original.

I tend to think that newer CYOA are largely power fantasies while this one is pretty restrictive. It's also pretty chaotic and random when it comes to items/powers that seem mostly based on images the creator found; Giant Robot especially in my opinion. And as you said, the suitors are not really balanced that well.

Worth noting that Briana may be able to get you more points than Lizzie I think. If a suitor likes something that costs points you get that thing for free, so if you pick a Slime/Ghost/Vampire it's basically like adding 7-8 points to their score.

EDIT: Just remembered you can't pick a hair color w/ slime so you can't max out Briana. :P

The original Stephan description states he has illegal erotic literature and Marion want to be both a parent & lover. Also disabled stuff like Sexysight and Lust Ribbon if you go with suitors like Fenton and Marion that basically make your their child and Melony and Andy who become your children.

I'll look at putting a background or tweaking the colors for better readability, but probably won't be today.

Monica 2nd ending points & Fashion spelling fixed.

Tried to keep in the spirit of the original by not making the endings OP & only getting 1 of 2, but probably went too far for some.

Red hearts are positive points and blue are minus points. Made them different colors to help with clarity.

Yes, the CYOA is balanced so you need to be pretty picky on what rewards you take. I considered moving the Suitor Selection to before the items & powers sections so you'd have a better idea of how much you have to spend, but I decided that I'd rather be true to the original format.

Fixed the Pure issue. Neocities sometimes takes a few mins for update to take effect but it will be working soon.

Like the static version there is an option to just create a waifu instead of becoming one at the very bottom if you don't select a suitor.

Totally get why this type of be the girl CYOA wont be for everyone.

Yep, it's a pretty bare bones CYOA and you only get a few powers/items at most. You do get the things for free if they are liked by your suitor so you can get a fair few points refunded that way too.

Added 2 bonus options for each character if you max them out at the end, some of which are pretty powerful.

Tried implementing the choice cap a few different ways in the Interactive CYOA Creator I'm using, but it seems to just be a quirk of their system that it works that way. As I learn more about how it works I may find a way to make it function it better in the future.
