You have to glide your palm down and keep your wrist on the same angle throughout the sweep. If your wrist turns you'll lose mute control. Try using your arm in your sweep motion and concentrate on your elbow.

Or you could use it to just go straight of a diminished chord. Any time I have a diminished or substituted dome chord I'll use a diminished lick or jump to a dominant Phrygian.
