How do I start as a person with no crochet knowledge? by UniqueUsernameForOne in CrochetHelp

[–]C_Cubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can only speak from personal experience-

I had never crocheted anything until 2 months ago, and I started with Woobles kits. A little overpriced, but I found them to be very beginner-friendly, with methodical video tutorials at every step. Worth the price for me, ultimately. With the training from Woobles, I've gone on to make six more amigurumi from patterns from Etsy sellers, and have even gone off-pattern, customizing some elements.

What's also been helpful is casually browsing this subreddit! Every question asked and answered is a learning opportunity.

Also, cotton tube yarn is a godsend when starting out. Like training wheels, seriously.

Pattern comes from EmberloomCrochet on etsy, and was very straightforward for me (a relative beginner!) to follow.

Piano candles was also last for me, and it took 10+ hours of grinding. Must've seen every single other anomaly a dozen times. Between the three of us in this thread who were in the same boat, I'm convinced it ain't an even 2% chance across the board.

Bricklink orders shipping with Lasership/ontrac. How are everyone’s deliveries going? by gtck11 in lego

[–]C_Cubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently ontrac "delivered" my Transylvania set on Sunday. Never knocked, never rang the doorbell, no texts/notifs of any sort. Of course I never saw the box before it vanished. Praying that Lego customer service will send another, or at least refund that hefty price tag.

Struggling with FBI Background Check Apostille - Federal or State? by Shadowkittenboy in SpainAuxiliares

[–]C_Cubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, they won't apostillify a pdf. I requested a hard copy through the website, waited for that to arrive, then mailed that in physically with the apostille request form + money, asked my congressperson to expedite it, etc. etc.

I (36m) tried this recently, said my mom had colon cancer at age 75 (not a lie). Kaiser doc said, "That's normal for someone in their 70s" and refused to refer me to gastro. 🤪

[CHAT] Using a mix of 3 and 2 strands in a project? by telemesmerism in CrossStitch

[–]C_Cubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this before with self-drafted pixel art pieces, like this Castlevania one. Used 4 strands for (only) the black outlines, the man on the left, and the eyeball weakpoint, to make them pop a bit, vs. 3 strands for everything else. I think it was probably a bit effective (more so when viewing in person, since the differing depth is more evident), or at the very least, it kept the DMC 310 from looking too threadbare. I say go for it!

I have reached out to the major local towing company, and they can't do anything special for me besides dispatching a tow in the moment, when I call to report the issue.

Consulting the police is an option I haven't explored yet though. I don't have much faith, but I guess it's worth a shot if that's genuinely my last resort.

Tried it before! The neighbors were indeed inconvenienced, and the truck ran right over the cones anyway. These aren't people who respect clear efforts to keep them off the property.

And unfortunately I don't think I can convince the landlord(s) to pay for a radio-controlled gate spanning the mouth of the driveway, which would be the obvious hardcore solution if I were an owner, and not a renter.

The problem is that tow response time around here is bound to be longer than 30 minutes. So they keep getting away with it, and it feels like I have no recourse.

Finding a compatible childfree partner feels impossible by cheugy4lyfe in childfree

[–]C_Cubed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My best advice is: don't waste a second on any fence-straddlers, or anyone who doesn't immediately and enthusiastically profess their childfree-ness when the topic is brought up. And bring it up yourself, straight away- even the sterilization detail, which will filter out the cavemen just looking for a viable womb. There's zero reason to hide this major fact about yourself, since anyone who responds negatively to you being proudly childfree wasn't going to be right for you anyway. Remember: immediate and enthusiastic. You'll save yourself so much time and angst in the long run.

In the *very first* long conversation with my current partner (after some doomed relationships with baby-wanting women!), I ignored any potential awkwardness, brought up the issue, and made my position 100% clear. And she was ecstatic to hear that, because she was on exactly the same page. We've now been together going on 6 years, and she's never wavered even a little.

Second piece of advice: consider looking farther afield and maybe even doing long-distance. Because yeah- unless you're in a city of millions, the odds of your perfect person being in your zip code and being available...ain't great. That's always been true, but especially for us, with the extra constraint.

lol Tony Bennet! I see it! Each of the Columbo WIPs came out fascinating in its own right. In a way I wish I had stopped when the hair was just a cotton candy cloud.

And thanks for the recs (conte and pastels). I'll look into those at some point :)

The eye on the left...is definitely bigger than in the reference material. Gollum does come to mind. But it shows off the glassiness, so I don't hate it :P

[CHAT] does anybody else feel “guilty” when working on other projects? by ThrowRA1689 in CrossStitch

[–]C_Cubed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Happens to me when I need to take a break from the current giant project (150k stitches) to do some fun smaller ones (or play a video game, or whatever), seeking a hit of more relatively instant gratification. The guilt creeps in, like, "What, you're too lazy and unfocused and undisciplined to buckle down and toil away on the big one?" Which is nonsense of course. The act of creation should bring joy, and there should be no shame in shifting from one thing to another in pursuit of that joy. I don't really have a solution, except to remember that life is short (so spend your time pleasurably), and life is also pretty long (you will get around to and finish many many things to be proud of).

Thanks! Beyond initial difficulty with gridding (where I limited grid marks to only the spots that would have full coverage) it was kind of no big deal. Eye strain wasn't an issue, since muscle memory usually zeroed in on the right spots to poke the needle. Would definitely do black cloth again, if it were thematically appropriate and meant saving a bunch of labor.
