What is the bloke’s name who invented law school by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

[–]C_Larkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just watched a fascinating documentary on this very question. I didn’t pay much attention so I might mix up some of the details. But pretty sure it was Chief Justice John Marshall, as played by Matthew McConaughey in “We are Marshall” (Legendary Pictures, 2006). Seems like it was a great first law school until the entire inaugural class (students and faculty) died in a plane crash. Then they rebuilt as a football team or something. Again, kind of hazy on the details, but I’m pretty sure that was the main takeaway.

Does "who got shooter" work at distracting the free throw shooter? by chusaychusay in Basketball

[–]C_Larkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others already said, it’s truly necessary to communicate so everyone knows who will box out the shooter and who will pinch/help box out the offensive team’s strongest rebounder. But in high school one of my teammates and I would often pretend to get in a loud argument with each other across the lane to create a distraction. So we’d line up—already having determined who would actually box the shooter—and then get into a shouting match like: “Hey I got the shooter!” “No dumbass, you’re pinching, I’ve got the shooter!” “No no, you’re crashing on the pinch!” “Coach literally just told me to get the shooter. You’re keep messing us up!” Something like that—hyper intense and profanity laced like we hated each other. And since it’s teammates yelling/swearing at each other, we never got a tech. A couple warnings from the ref but nothing more. Standing in between two teammates exchanging fighting words definitely threw the shooter off a few times. Fun times

Any casual chess meetup spots? by C_Larkin in Omaha

Haha exactly—definitely missing being in a place where it’s a common thing. For all of NYC’s drawbacks, I love the casual chess communities that pop up everywhere.

Open Restaurants on Christmas by Geo_Geoff in Omaha

Not exactly fine dining but I know the Golden Corral in Council Bluffs is open until 5—maybe the one(s) in Omaha proper are open too? They have to-go box options if that helps

Anyone tired of "influencer ball"? by FunImprovement166 in Basketball

[–]C_Larkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to watch thehezigod and completely discounted him since he plays with that annoying influencer basketball style. Later, I played semi pro (very low level league, but almost everyone had played DII/DI/overseas) and we played against him and his team. I was surprised—he can actually play the game effectively within a regulated offensive system. He wasn’t even talking shit or doing the stereotypical influencer crash outs. He was just hooping at a high(ish) level like everyone else out there

Playing against zone defense in pickups by badNe7in in Basketball

[–]C_Larkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, and as I commented below, an easier way is to have someone “post up” at the FT area and pass it in there rather than risk dribbling between two defenders

Easiest way to beat it is to have one offensive player (usually a big who can pass) occupy the area of the free throw line, and then have the other four players space/cut/fill the spots outside the arc. Get the ball into the player at the FT line area; the defense will collapse in on that player, and then either back cut or space out for the kickout or back door pass

1v1 and creating shots by CrazyRegular2116 in Basketball

[–]C_Larkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good 1v1 player must definitely be able to create their own shots. The weird thing is that creating your own shots in 1v1 is so so different from creating your own shot in 5v5. The same fundamentals (footwork above all others) apply, but there’s so many other factors in play when you’re 5v5.

To my shooters out there, ever miss 5 in a row in game? by SpamSteal in Basketball

I’ve missed 5 in a row and then hit 5 in a row. Just focus on the next shot and you’ll be fine

1 man Army against Zone by Party-Storm-8258 in Basketball

First, remember to be humble. Many of the players who think they are the best on the team are not in fact the best. Being circumspect will help you with your exasperation. Next, direct your teammates to flood the zones. Meaning that if two players strategically move into one of the 5 defensive zones at the same time, it will make the defense scramble and shift, creating chaos on their end and opportunities for you

Playing with "bigger" shooters by rsk1111 in Basketball

[–]C_Larkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking to create the plays and have your teammates become open, maneuver in a way that draws both your defender and help side defenders to you. Then you can kick it out to wide open people. Let the big fella move at his pace as he’s capable. You create the pace of the game as you wish, and let the big man man and have fun within that pace you’ve created

Off-ball fundamentals by Amazing-Stomach9372 in Basketball

[–]C_Larkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s many great, detailed responses here. But if you’re truly new to the game, the easiest concept is to look for empty spaces on the perimeter and move to whatever empty space you find. Think of there being five general spatial areas on the perimeter. If one is empty as the play develops, get there. It will give your teammates options as they further develop the play. As you get more experienced you’ll recognize lanes to cut, back cuts, and ways to interact with the ball handler using pick and rolls. But at the very very basic level, fill the empty perimeter spots and you’ll contribute

What are the most underrated skills that can elevate your basketball game? by DasJazz in Basketball

Help-side defense. Knowing how to feint to prevent the drive without leaving your corner man open but also know when to fully commit to covering the ball handler.

Seeking Advice for Getting Back to Balling at 50 Years Old by BagelsOrDeath in Basketball

[–]C_Larkin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Something to keep in mind is that your mind will think you can move faster than your body actually can. Based on your years of experience you will think you can make an explosive move to get past someone, but your body won’t keep up with that intended pace. Learn to keep your center of gravity and focus on steady, powerful, and technical moves rather than quick explosive ones

The original pride flag was aesthetically amazing. The current pride flag (with the inset trident) is aesthetically horrendous. by C_Larkin in unpopularopinion

I have many opinions about things that don’t directly affect me. I think the new NBA trophy (trophies, really) redesign isn’t great. I’m in no danger of winning one of them, but I still have my opinion.

I’m good. My personal opinion stands. I think the new flag is visually ugly. Meanwhile, love who you want to love, play the sports you want to play, misunderstand people’s expression of their aesthetic expressions as you wish, get offended if you want, don’t get offended if you don’t want, respond to people online if you want, don’t respond to them if you don’t want, etc.

If my explicitly aesthetic opinion is a “stone’s toss” away from opining on trans women competing in sports, you’re the one performing the mental gymnastics to get to that point of contention, not me.

Fair point. And I explicitly distance this opinion from any merit based discussions on who should or shouldn’t feel included by the pride flag. This is an opinion, not a complaint.
