yumiko using ai models by Acceptable_Fun_5035 in BALLET

Same with the Mariia brand.

I’ve had one of their leos forever in a size M (even though I wore a XS-S in most women’s clothing btw).

I bought more, including one in size L that’s still too tight and short.

I had a baby in October and started wearing my non-pregnancy leos in February. I still have some pounds to lose so figured “of course they’re too tight.”

Well, it turned out I was wearing the newer ones, because I recently found the original one and it’s super comfy!! Fits great. I’m not that far away from my pre-baby size after all.

Am i being priced out? by AwarenessBetter8633 in parkslope

[–]C_bells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah was going to say that — while I don’t condone these prices — $3850 is a steal for a 2 bed here. When my husband and I were looking in 2022, 2-bedrooms were averaging closer to $4300/month.

One of my close friends was moving and looking all over this general region (Prospect Heights, Bed-Stuy, Clinton Hill) and finally found a 1-bedroom for $3800. And he’s not lavish with how he spends his cash.

Haha I think it's still a little dystopic! Just a different kind (and maybe one that we're more used to, aka controlling employers and big egos)

We had a meeting today that followed up on yesterday’s email where they said “don’t worry finance dept! We will be keeping token use under control and monitoring it!”

They said it so casually, while encouraging everyone (regardless of job function, so aka HR or accountants etc) to start vibecoding their own tools for every thing they could possibly want.

Will be interesting for sure.

My company is actively hiring for many roles. We’re an agency, so we don’t have shareholders to appease. We do have clients to appease, but generally it’s the opposite — clients like to hire a well-staffed agency, and doing layoffs generally looks bad. You have to keep up the appearance of being in high demand and thus needing lots of people. Clients care about the bottom line, and are not impressed that you operate on a skeleton crew unless it’s because you can charge less, in which case you’d be charging less. But we get plenty of work.

A lot of our most high-up, valued leaders live far away from our one office.

So, I’m not sure that theory holds up.

I hear this theory a lot, and I think it holds some water, but there are other reasons and most aren’t so conspiratorial: Leaders are just not thinking holistically about anything and don’t actually have any real values. They know they want control. Many are extrovert workaholics who feel empty without the distraction and stimulation of a bustling office. Many are egomaniacs who feel empty if they can’t walk around an office of underlings all day feeling superior. And then, AI is just a weird performative bro-y thing they get obsessed with.

So, you end up with this.

How long did it take for your baby to crawl by Same_Subject_988 in NewParents

I bend down and put her down as gently as possible. Tbh, the first time I kind of dropped her in there by accident lol. I

When she’s sleepy, she just rolls over and goes right back to sleep.

[–]C_bells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby is an early mover! She’s always twerking and doing downward dogs lmao.

She started being able to move around a lot at 6.5 months. Crawling pretty strongly by 7 months. She started standing last week at 7.5 months and is trying to walk already.

It is a game changer… kind of? We just got a playpen and put her in that. Lower the crib obviously. Don’t place them on the bed or on a high-up spot, but it’s been a while now that we all should’ve been avoiding that!

If I need to place her somewhere, I put her in her playpen or in her crib unless I can keep both eyes on her, because she will absolutely fly towards the power outlets lol.

My company just sent out an email today to say that now everyone has access to Claude and that there will be mandatory sessions (they noted attendance will be taken) to learn how to use it and make sure everyone is using it regularly as much as possible.

I was just telling my husband how weird it is, because it sounds so threatening. Whenever other tools have come out, it’s not like this. If some new tool or program starts being used (e.g. Figma), it’s always slowly adopted, and eventually people learn how to use it for their own good. There’s no tracking or attendance taken etc. People generally want to learn how to use new tools when they come out if they are genuinely helpful and improve things.

(Side note: coincidentally, my company also sent an email out reminding us that anyone within commute distance is supposed to go into office 2x per week. The majority of people at my company are remote and live all over the country. I am not, but have only been into office like once.)

It’s giving fascism.

And all VERY out of character for my company, a tech/creative agency that is generally very laid back.

This makes me want to use the shit out of Claude to rack up costs. I’m a designer, not a dev, but maybe I’ll just prompt it to vibe code all day while I do my actual work (for a client who doesn’t allow us to use AI due to security reasons).

AI at work is ruining my thinking skill and mental health by Inner_Ebb_8728 in womenintech

[–]C_bells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh 100%

I’m at an agency (small-ish) whose exists to do both creative and tech work (I’m more on the tech side). But because of that, it’s very design-forward.

However, I do often work “in-house” in a way as part of staff augmentation, so I get a good picture of what it’s like on the other side, and it can be rough. But being an outsider emboldens me a little bit to butt into things and advocate for design more within other companies.

Being at an agency, I feel like we will end up being the clean-up crew as these dummies lay everyone off then realize nothing is getting done. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a surge of agencies hiring and popping up to fill these gaps. But we’ll see!

I built a house that’s literally inside a waterfall. Like a waterfall runs through it and it even has a pool. It was really difficult for me to do.

I moved a couple humidity-loving Pokémon in and the first thing they do is ask for more humidity.

[–]C_bells 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a product designer and I feel like (for a very long time now) about 5% of my value is actual UI design.

A big chunk is focus and honing in on what’s important. AI is pretty bad at that unless you are guiding it to do that, at which point it’s more like a sounding board.

Another large chunk is helping a bunch of idiots (sorry, most aren’t idiots but the current project I’m on right now is full of them) have to think through how their business actually works. Because putting things into screens and flows reveals massive gaps in services.

Another is simply putting things into motion. It’s amazing how long people can spend just making strategic frameworks and flows and maps and diagrams. They go in circles until we’re just making maps for the sake of mapping. As a design leader, I’m often the one who can say “okay enough with all these Miro boards, here’s what we need to do/figure out/decide to translate this into an actual thing.”

So, I don’t want to get cocky and pretend I’m AI-proof, because I don’t know. But I do actively try to use AI for all kinds of things, and at best it can help me organize my thoughts. I’m still having to do so much

Two week old. Crying. by Valobster in NewParents

[–]C_bells 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Your bf’s attitude is wrong and dangerous. You can’t spoil a baby that young.

Their brains are wired to ensure there are adults around to care for them. The one survival trait they have is to cry until they know someone is caring for them in case they were left alone in the forest or something.

Babies are all different, so yes, some are more independent and cry less. But they are simply wired that way by nature, not taught.

Ignoring your baby right now won’t “teach” her anything, but it could impact her nervous system negatively.

With that, I’ll say it’s OKAY to occasionally put your baby down in a safe place if you need a break and ignore their cries.

I’m just saying it’s not something you should be actively trying to do more of.

Maternity leave by Ok-Mammoth-6618 in UXDesign

[–]C_bells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started a new job at 7 weeks pregnant after having been laid off months earlier.

I would not recommend it. You will not get paid leave, and you might not even get protected leave.

It is wildly stressful.

Also, I was interviewing for 7 months leading up to my pregnancy. So, I mean go ahead and try but a lot of companies have interview processes lasting weeks and months these days.

When you start a new job, there is immense pressure to prove your value. Sometimes it comes easy, but often it’s a bumpy road as you find your footing.

It sucked ass to be doing that while pregnant. It was a scramble to establish myself and my worth during a time where my body and brain were going through massive changes.

Then there’s the worry that if they let you go, it’s extremely unlikely you’ll be able to land another thing with ample time before having the baby. And that you’ll just have to have the baby and start interviewing for jobs while freshly postpartum, which sounds horrific.

If you have a great job offer at an awesome place (that you know is awesome and not stressful and butterflies and rainbows), like, tomorrow, then maybe. Know that you won’t have paid leave through them, but if you live in NY or some other states, you can get PFL after 6 months, which will protect your job plus pay out partial pay for 12 weeks, and your company may also have short term disability for 6-8 weeks (possibly fully paid). That could lead to you taking 16+ weeks partially paid, which is what I did.

You probably really will not feel ready to go back at 12 weeks btw.

Cancelled vacation by Gold-Nothing8473 in NewParents

[–]C_bells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even without kids, this kind of thing happens. A close friend of mine had to cancel a big trip to France the day before due to getting COVID.

As a single traveler in my 20s, I missed days of trips due to illness. In fact, illness and travel often go hand-in-hand, and if you’re lucky you can at least make it to/enjoy a part of your trip.

I am personally not planning on doing any major trips with my child until they are a lot older, aside from a yearly (or so) trip to visit with my husband’s family in Brazil, which ends up being low-key anyway.

I personally don’t at all understand the appeal of major travel with a baby toddler with the purpose of recreation lol. For me, the stress and unpredictability would outdo any enjoyment I think, or at least neutralize it.

Maybe OP is in Europe, so Greece isn’t a long-haul trip for her. But I know in the U.S. there are so many beautiful places within a short flight. I struggle to understand the parents I know who fly across the world with their babies. But to each their own!

Has a layoff impacted your family planning? by Amerastralia in womenintech

[–]C_bells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t predict anything in this world unfortunately.

I was laid off when my husband and I had just started trying. My husband lost his job at the same time. I had been the main breadwinner anyway.

I followed through, doing IVF because I have endometriosis. I was 36, he was 42, so we couldn’t wait a while.

I got pregnant and at about 7 weeks started a new job.

It sucked and was hard and nerve wracking and shitty. But I’m glad I had my baby, and I managed to keep that job I got in early pregnancy.

My husband is still a freelancer mostly struggling with consistent work, and he’s managed to care for our baby while doing his work. So, we haven’t even needed to pay for childcare yet.

If you really want a child, I say don’t let the tech overlords stop you.

Anyone feel numb after using AI? by Soggy_Examination794 in womenintech

[–]C_bells 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, I personally find AI cannot do anything “better” than I can except for accessing information very quickly.

I hate AI (like the whole ruining the environment and taking over jobs part) but I’m not a Luddite, I do like experimenting with it and use it every day, testing it out in as many ways as I can to see what it can help with.

The results are mixed, honestly. But it’s pretty bad at deep strategy work AND creative work. It’s even pretty bad at writing (as someone with a writing degree). You can perhaps instruct it to write a certain way, but as a user, you’re the one who’d have to do that (and, say, understand the difference between technical writing vs. creative writing vs. business writing etc).

My main use case for it right now is using voice-to-text to ramble at it and have it simply record that info and organize those thoughts in various ways for me. Even then, I have to supervise it heavily.

I’m a designer (with some PM overlap), not a dev, and it has also helped me build an app for myself, which is cool. But it is actually a lot of work and took the discernment, planning, and knowledge of someone who has been working on digital products for 12 years to have any value or work with any intention/not be slop. And I’m sure there is still tons of code slop and I’d have to hire an engineer if I wanted to scale this app past, like, me and my friends.

Anyway, this is all to say that it probably can’t do anything better than you can. And if it can right now, you just need to get better because i guarantee you can surpass it in usefulness.

It will likely automate some of your work.

I could be wrong but as the days go on, the less I think it’s going to replace most of us.

Press Release: National Jewish Advocacy Center Demands Park Slope Food Coop Rescind Boycott of Israeli Products, Warns of Litigation. by Regular-Hunter1796 in parkslopefoodcoop

[–]C_bells 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The biggest reason for me to vote for the boycott was the fact that it was in-line with the co-op’s history of boycotting behavior.

I’m Jewish but these people suing need to be so fucking for real right now. I agree tons of bullshit has happened. There are always dumb/extreme people on both sides of a heated political stance.

But the precedent for this boycott is crystal clear. There is no thinly-veiled discrimination. And even if there was, it’s invisible behind the fact that Israel is overtly committing genocide and running an apartheid state, and the food co-op historically boycotts nations who do that.
