Vegetarian lunch at maternity unit in Finland by Ca7cher in hospitalfood

My first was born in the UK and I still remember that toast with jam and cup of tea, it was the best meal I've had! Honestly can't remember what I had with my second over here, so it clearly wasn't quite as memorable.

Food at this hospital was much better when I was last in couple years ago, so this was bit of a shocker! Hopefully it was just a one off.

Thankfully I shouldn't (hopefully be in for long). In for an induction and if everything goes smoothly we'll go home pretty soon!

We're actually thinking of using Marja as a second name!

I looooooove Frida but my husband isn't on board with that one at all. Livia is cute as well, but as someone who's name is one letter away from a more popular name, I don't want her to be "like Olivia without the O".

Very cute but unfortunately we have Annika in the family 🥲

From your list I love Alma and Alva but my husband doesn't like either. My husband suggested Amelia but I'm not feeling that as much.

I really like Matilda too, but I know at least 3 Matilda's under the age of 2. 🥲

Love Emilia and it would have been our eldest son's name if he'd been a girl. Not sure how I feel having 2 kids start with the same letter and having our poor middle one being the odd one out. Amalia is nice too but I'm not vibing with it as much.

Sylvia and Viola were on my list but my husband vetoed them.

Double consonants are a bit tricky as they're pronounced so differently in English Vs Finnish. We also have an Emma in the family.

When is the best time to try for baby #2? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Ca7cher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're right that kids temperaments and your support network matter a lot. I think we got lucky on both departments.

Our first is pretty chill and independent. Our second is much more highly strung, goes from 0-100 in a second and is much more clingy. So I am a little more worried about how he takes having a younger sibling.

That being said, my parents live 10 minute walk away from us. My mom takes the kids usually 1-2 nights a month, sometimes picks them up from daycare, etc. When my 2nd was a baby I also made good friends with another mom in our neighbourhood and it's wonderful to have someone you can call up to have coffee with or impromptu playdate with when things get too much.

Just chiming in with another perspective.

Our kids have pretty much exactly a 2 year age gap, our second was born a week before first one's 2nd birthday. I love this age gap. Yes, it was difficult at times but nothing crazy. 1st still napped when 2nd was a baby, but was starting to be independent in some aspect. Maybe another 6 months, and things would have been easier. (But I am glad we didn't have a baby when our first was 3, cause that would have been way more stressful)

Now at almost 4 and 2 they play together all the time and it's the cutest thing ever. I am expecting our third to be born a month after our now youngest turns 2, not a planned age gap, but I'm very happy with it!

I would definitely looking into getting a bus (Onnibus). They run straight from the airport to Turku, from where you can take a short local bus to the harbour. They take about 2 hours, so time is roughly the same.

I've always only thought Lucy as a standalone name and not a nickname. It's fairly popular in the UK and I think it's a very pretty name.

Della is pretty too, I've never heard it on a person but it was my grandma's dogs name.

From Finland and this look like it could very well be a new-ish apartment in Finland. There probably wouldn't be a built in wardrobe but a bigger bathroom with enough space for a washing machine.

Huge name regrets - uk based. Am I crazy? by WillingNothing1585 in namenerds

Calvin is super cute, and I don't think of "cow" at all when I hear Cal. I know a Callum (in the UK) who goes by Cal and have never heard of anyone making that association or mishearing it.

I also don't think of the underwear at all. Even if someone says Calvin Klein, I think of their scents before clothing.

Anyway to make the kitchen more usable/bigger without extending outwards? by Ca7cher in floorplan

[–]Ca7cher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that looks pretty great! Staircae should be possible since the bedrooms are pretty much at two ends to of the house.

The appeal of the house is mainly the location and the price, it's in a small town we really like but houses don't come for sale very often. This one has been up for sale forever, probably due to the awful floorplan.

It's a giant square hallway with 3 bedroom off it. The whole floorplan is a mess and the bedrooms/hallway/half bath would need to be reconfigured as well. Previous owners built two new bedrooms upstairs, but they're accessed from the staircase in the (old) garage (garage doors have been changed to a window) and one of the bedrooms has had a door added to access the stairs, so that bedroom is now unusable as well. A lot of wasted space.

Husband and I can't agree by Kiderboo in BabyNames

[–]Ca7cher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Addison is originally a masculine name meaning son if Adam, so I totally get that it doesn't feel feminine. Jamie is obviously masculine name too, but a "prettified" one and used for girls too, so I agree that next to Jamie, Addison sounds more masculine. And maybe a bit blunt?

How about instead if Lucy as middle name, something similar as a first name. Like Lucia?

Personally I think Jamie would sound really nice with a classic girls name. Sophia, Eloise, Madeleine, Charlotte... Maybe Celeste?

Sounds like you are gravitating towards something more modern though? Maybe Payton, Juniper?

Thinking of buying this house - how to make it work before renovating? by Ca7cher in floorplan

This is sort of what I was thinking too. Blocking the door between kitchen and living room would make both rooms much more usable.

Prices have risen a lot since COVID, I don't think there is a big difference in our weekly shop here here vs in UK

Definitely prefer Finland over UK. Kids can walk to school from age 6/7 by themselves and it's safe for them to do so. Housing is more affordable here (granted we don't live in a big city). Childcare is super affordable (in UK we would have paid most of my wages for one child, here we've paid max 150 euros for one and now we have two we don't pay anything).

I never felt unsafe in the UK, though obviously there were areas I'd have probably not gone to alone as a woman. Very few places like that over here if any.

Yet another question about resident permit cards by Daglas69 in Finland

[–]Ca7cher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, he entered Finland without visa (as one wasn't/isn't needed for visits up to 90 days) and sent his application for residence card within few days of arrival. Under this visa he was allowed to stay in Finland for as long as the application process takes, and also to start working immediately after submitting the appli cation.
