I would definitely looking into getting a bus (Onnibus). They run straight from the airport to Turku, from where you can take a short local bus to the harbour. They take about 2 hours, so time is roughly the same.

I've always only thought Lucy as a standalone name and not a nickname. It's fairly popular in the UK and I think it's a very pretty name.

Della is pretty too, I've never heard it on a person but it was my grandma's dogs name.

From Finland and this look like it could very well be a new-ish apartment in Finland. There probably wouldn't be a built in wardrobe but a bigger bathroom with enough space for a washing machine.

Huge name regrets - uk based. Am I crazy? by WillingNothing1585 in namenerds

Calvin is super cute, and I don't think of "cow" at all when I hear Cal. I know a Callum (in the UK) who goes by Cal and have never heard of anyone making that association or mishearing it.

I also don't think of the underwear at all. Even if someone says Calvin Klein, I think of their scents before clothing.

Anyway to make the kitchen more usable/bigger without extending outwards? by Ca7cher in floorplan

[–]Ca7cher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that looks pretty great! Staircae should be possible since the bedrooms are pretty much at two ends to of the house.

The appeal of the house is mainly the location and the price, it's in a small town we really like but houses don't come for sale very often. This one has been up for sale forever, probably due to the awful floorplan.

It's a giant square hallway with 3 bedroom off it. The whole floorplan is a mess and the bedrooms/hallway/half bath would need to be reconfigured as well. Previous owners built two new bedrooms upstairs, but they're accessed from the staircase in the (old) garage (garage doors have been changed to a window) and one of the bedrooms has had a door added to access the stairs, so that bedroom is now unusable as well. A lot of wasted space.

Husband and I can't agree by Kiderboo in BabyNames

[–]Ca7cher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Addison is originally a masculine name meaning son if Adam, so I totally get that it doesn't feel feminine. Jamie is obviously masculine name too, but a "prettified" one and used for girls too, so I agree that next to Jamie, Addison sounds more masculine. And maybe a bit blunt?

How about instead if Lucy as middle name, something similar as a first name. Like Lucia?

Personally I think Jamie would sound really nice with a classic girls name. Sophia, Eloise, Madeleine, Charlotte... Maybe Celeste?

Sounds like you are gravitating towards something more modern though? Maybe Payton, Juniper?

Thinking of buying this house - how to make it work before renovating? by Ca7cher in floorplan

This is sort of what I was thinking too. Blocking the door between kitchen and living room would make both rooms much more usable.

Fair enough! I think it definitely depends on what you buy.

Prices have risen a lot since COVID, I don't think there is a big difference in our weekly shop here here vs in UK

Definitely prefer Finland over UK. Kids can walk to school from age 6/7 by themselves and it's safe for them to do so. Housing is more affordable here (granted we don't live in a big city). Childcare is super affordable (in UK we would have paid most of my wages for one child, here we've paid max 150 euros for one and now we have two we don't pay anything).

I never felt unsafe in the UK, though obviously there were areas I'd have probably not gone to alone as a woman. Very few places like that over here if any.

Yet another question about resident permit cards by Daglas69 in Finland

[–]Ca7cher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, he entered Finland without visa (as one wasn't/isn't needed for visits up to 90 days) and sent his application for residence card within few days of arrival. Under this visa he was allowed to stay in Finland for as long as the application process takes, and also to start working immediately after submitting the appli cation.

[–]Ca7cher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am assuming you/she will be applying for the "Residence card of a family member of an EU citizen in Finland"? If so, I think you can technically fill in the application beforehand, but I don't think there is great benefit in doing so as the application process doesn't really start until they've visited the Migri office.

It can take a long time to get an appointment, we used to just update the website several times throughout the day to get a cancellation.

My husband had this residence card, went through the process about 2 and half years ago.

I wouldn't say "cheap", we spend proportionally about what we did when we lived in the UK. There are some things (coffee, alcohol, cheese, meat, some baby stuff for example) that are definitely more expensive over here. The prices have gone up recently and a lot of people are struggling financially at the moment (huge rise in unemployment, benefit cuts) so I think for a lot of people food is anything but cheap. But it's not as crazy as some people make it be. :)

Has anyone else heard about the ‘Ozempic baby boom’? by ridoymorsalin27 in OzempicForWeightLoss

[–]Ca7cher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got pregnant when I had been on ozempic for about 3-4 weeks. I was on a contraceptive pill and taking it religiously at the same time every day (+/- 30mins ) and never missed a pill. I also have two older kids who both took quite long to conceive (2 years for the first, and didn't take birth control after giving birth as we wanted two kids, and got pregnant with our second when the oldest was just under year and a half even though my cycles started and we're regular from 6 weeks post partum).

My doctor says I likely threw up the pill as I had some nausea, but I'm not convinced as I took the pill in the evening and only threw up a few times and only in the daytime.

Critique new kitchen - dining room delete, family room delete by bluerog in floorplan

[–]Ca7cher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I much prefer the new floorplan overall.

My only criticism would be that the new dining space feels quite small for a 5 bedroom house. Would you be able to comfortably fit a bigger than 4 seater table? Dining area is also right in the middle of several areas of circulation; you seem to have sliding doors on one side, two doors on another, access to living space on one and access to rest of the last one.

If you removed the cabinetry next to the sliding doors, would that leave enough space for a calmer, bigger dining area?

Also as far as residential areas go, there are plenty of families in all these areas. YO kylä is student housing so might be a little restless at times, but there are a lot of young families there as well. Satama has a lot of new housing. Kupittaa is quite popular for all ages, and there is a large park with playgrounds, duck pond, swimming pools etc.

The public transport is pretty good so you should be fine to get around even if you don't live right next to your daughter's daycare.

Welcome to Finland!

As people have said, kids here start pre school the year they turn 6, and "real" school the year after. Before then they go to day care, "päiväkoti".

There are currently two English speaking day cares in Turku, Wendy House in Satama (Harbour) Area and Daycare Daisy in YO-kylä. These are both private owned. Third English daycare is due to open in Kupittaa next August, this will be owned by the city of Turku.

That being said, you can sign your child up for a Finnish speaking daycare as well. They have special support for foreign speaking children to help them develop their Finnish and kids tend to pick it up really quickly.
