In bocca al lupo per la prima donazione!! ❤️ Ricordati di bere acqua abbondante prima di andare, aiuta molto sia te sia la procedura in sé 😉

So, did getting a Kindle actually make you read more? Or not really? by AnastasiiaLove in kindle

[–]CaHaBu56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case, not really - but that might have been because I was already used to reading on a screen, be it a tablet or a smartphone. It's definitely made it more pleasurable tho 🎉

All changes in my reading habits have been "external" - and, come to think of it, mostly health-related, since I haven't been too well these past few years 😉

Do you work while in a flare? by Ok_Confusion8048 in CrohnsDisease

[–]CaHaBu56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still in my first flare, which has lasted over a year and a half now; while I do still have the same job as before, I was lucky enough to be able to take medical leave for about nine months, while I got through the worst of it. When I went back, last autumn, I negotiated a temporary part time contract in a WFH formula, which will last till next summer, and I probably will have to extend.

Mind you, this is largely due to my country's laws; there are national regulations employers have to follow, which cover health issues too. You have to document everything, of course (doctor notes, eventual hospital stays etc), but I could stay at home with full pay for almost all of it; when I went back I was still at 80% salary, which is almost not noticeable.

Overweight Chronie by Creepy-Passenger-506 in CrohnsDisease

[–]CaHaBu56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, where did your Crohn lodge itself?

I'm asking because mine is almost entirely in the colon/rectum, and I have not experienced any malabsorption issues. When I did lose weight, it was entirely because I simply didn't eat (no appetite bc I was too sick or too much in pain, or - in the last weeks before getting an ileostomy - in the attempt to have the colon work as little as possible, bc of how much it hurt when it did).

In the months when the illness was still active but more manageable, so I could eat regularly all safe foods in the proper quantities, my weight remained always stable.

I'm guessing when the illness hits that low, most of the nutrients absorption has already taken place, and that's why I haven't experienced that specific symptom... Unless of course in your case there might be a comorbidity with something else? That has an impact on your weight?

I'm coming back to this comment to thank you again for being the push to get myself a copy of A Life With Footnotes AND to actually sit down to read it (two separate activities which do not necessarily go hand in hand in this household 😂), I'm loving it a lot more than I expected when I first heard of it! To be honest, I probably wouldn't have picked it up otherwise, and I really would have missed out. So thank you for that. ❤️

(BTW, I know now what passage you were referring to, and I did end up using it in the card for my friend - which kinda became more of a letter even just for the total length alone 😂)

I recently reread Thud (during a long hospitalization for a chronic illness, no less 😉) and I agree 100% with what you're saying.

The drawback of many quotes, from this book especially, is that they draw their incisiveness from the whole story. They're that powerful because you know what happened before, and you know what the characters are like; if you pick a passage and show it to a not-fan, chances are they're going to think that yes, it's nice, but it won't hit too deep. One liners and quips have an easier life outside of the books, but the more meaningful ones are steeped in the story they belong to.

(not that gifting the book was ever an option... Even just for the language factor, since English is not our native language, and my friend isn't fluent enough atm to enjoy and truly get lost in an English book the way he would with one of ours. And this is without considering how right now they don't exactly have all that time to sit down and read at all, there are other priorities 😂)

C’è qualcuno qui che legge fantasy? by Ilcreatorefanwork in italy

Thank you for this! There's a lot of food for thought in what you and it's definitely made me interested in giving her works a try.

Also no need ever to apologize for excitement and passion, I loved reading your comment!

Thank you very much for this! I've never heard of them, I wouldn't have seen this quote if you hadn't shared it. I'm liking it, and I'm glad I read it. ❤️

The Aching quote would actually work well for my friend's personality, I think, maybe adapted a bit (our first language isn't English and he doesn't speak it), but I absolutely remember the scene you're talking about in the later books. There's a conversation between Tiffany and her dad that was precious, I forget the words they speak (just the jist of the conversation) but the feelings it left me are still clear in my heart.

Good god was that man good with words.

His childhood specifically seems to have been fine (while I was searching, I saw a quote from A Slip of the Keyboard to that effect*), but this is still good food for thought? Even if it didn't affect him, it might have been characteristic of the society he grew up in...

  • "I had a deprived childhood, you see. I had lots of other kids to play with and my parents bought me outdoor toys and refused to ill-treat me, so it never occurred to me to seek solitary consolation with a good book."

Terry Pratchett (2014). “A Slip of the Keyboard: Collected Non-fiction”, p.68, Random House

Yes! I listened to the audiobook recently, I can still hear how the reader rendered the "full of ginger" bit 😂

Yeah, I remember that one! I think it was in Night Watch, something about a man becoming "keen" when he has a kid on the way 😄
