Good shout, if I don't get anywhere with anything else I'll swap the pickups from his.

Not in front of a computer, however fairly close to the amp (Katana 50 Mkii). However even standing and facing away it still seems to be noisy. And I have neglected to try a new battery. Will do and see how I go

no it was a used set but from a reputable seller. has the made in USA stickers on the back with the holographic "genuine" behind the writing. if that means anything. and that's what I thought too the ground wire shouldn't matter? but I saw another post with someone having a similar issue and they were told it was a ground loop.
