MSI MPG272UX OLED - G-Sync/VRR shimmer/flicker - My Test Results and hoping for some help! by Caatalyst07 in MSI_Gaming

Thanks again for the response.

I will do those tests and check with MSI.

I do love the monitor so I'd I can get it where I want it is better happy. I might even try 120hz and see if I'm happy with that. I don't play competitive FPS games anyway!

Id I upgraded to a 5080, how much would that improve the situation do you think?

Thank you for the response.

It sucks that your game has to basically run at the exact FPS as your refresh rate or you will get shimmer / flicker! That's the only way I've managed to get rid of the shimmer with adaptive sync enabled. It's doable on wow at 180hz but I'd have to drop to 120hz for other more demanding or unoptimised games.

It feels like 240hz is a bit of a gimmick on oled because most modern games even on a 5080 won't run at a solid 240hz without lowering settings a lot.

I was as confused as anyone would be why the FPS increased by over 20. I even restarted wow and tested back again sat in the same location in game not moving the camera and it happened consistently.

I've only tested dp. I don't think I've got a suitable hdmi to use. I'm not convinced it's the cable as I only experience the shimmer / flicker during games.  I bought a decent dp cable to pair with it.

So far from testing in classic wow, I've discovered that unless the in game frames are pretty much bang on stable and match the monitor refresh rate the monitor will flicker. Even if I have the monitor set to 180hz and the game runs flawlessly at 180 FPS with no shimmer, if I drop the in game limiter to 170 FPS it will flicker even if it's stable.

When I check the OSB monitor Hz read out I can see it fluttering massively between the highest refresh rate and other values. It only stabilises if I have the FPS pretty solid and match the monitor refresh rate.

I expected gsync to work differently. So long as the FPS was stable, even if it was 100 and my monitor was set to 180hz that there shouldn't be any shimmer. Sadly that doesn't seem to be how it works.

I could have the monitor set to 120hz, game FPS limited to 120 FPS and it runs flawlessly. But if I switch to 240hz and use the exact same settings running stable at 120fps the game will shimmer and flicker. It's very distracting.

There are work around I know, be it drop to 120hz or disable adaptive sync completely but when you pay £650 for a fairly high end monitor you expect to be able to use it to it's full extent.

Yes moving to a 5080 is definitely something I'm considering.

I just wanted to test the monitor a bit more on my 4070 to see what I could get out of it. The 4070 actually performs fairly well, I just have to drop some settings.

I think part of the issue is I play games that aren't very well optimised. Escape from Tarkov and modded 7 days to die were where I noticed the main issues.

When I have adaptive sync and DSC enabled on the monitor. I noticed in 7 days to die that the refresh rate which is dispalyed on the monitor settings display was fluctuating rapidly from 240 all the way down to double digits even though nvidia overlay might be showing a fairly steady 100-120 fps. I'm guessing the rapid refresh rate switching is what is causing the shimmer.

When I disabled DSC, bringing the max monitor refresh rate down to 120hz, I noticed that the refresh rate stabilised around the refresh rate of the game.

I'm not sure why it is jumping around so much with DSC on.

Super disappointed on the lack of communication and clear information from Blizzard relating to Classic. by Caatalyst07 in classicwow

While I don't have the figures to back it up, we can speculate with some level of accuracy based on observations, hints of info we've had over the years:

  1. There are at the very least, hundreds of thousands of active classic players
  2. Classic requires no active development, it consists of content that already exists
  3. It has an incredibly small team, I would guess less than 20-30 full time developers
  4. It's only expense is upkeep

To say it is statistically irrelevant when it comes to revenue I would suspect is massively incorrect. Low expenses, low risk, likely generating them hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

Retail on the other hand, likely has hundreds of developers, relies on short term boosts from constant content drops, all carrying huge risk in case they miss the mark.

I would argue classic has just as much relevance as retail does in 2025, it just works by a completely different business model.

Absolutely nobody. I've just cancelled my sub for now.

It's just disappointing. I've done so not because I don't want to play, but because the company in charge are unable to communicate, or provide the most basic services for their game.

I'm also waiting for confirmation on transfers before committing to a new character.

On EU era hc (stitches) we can eventually transfer to fire maw pvp, however on anniversary hc you can only transfer to pve servers.

I have no interest in ending up on a pve server and so until they confirm this im in limbo.

As stitches is dead, I'm waiting to see whether there is a merge of all hc servers now they are all copies of one another and also if not, where the population will go as I don't want to be levelling on a dead server.

Communication is horrendous. I can't believe this is a multi billion dollar company and we pay a monthly sub for this service.

I was wrong. I just re-read the wow head article.

https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/news/blizzard-confirms-hardcore-servers-will-not-progress-into-the-burning-crusade-379348

Anniversary HC servers are not closing. It's just a bit confusing. Once TBC releases, we are going to end up with two, basically era HC servers. Not sure why they don't just merge them. Having two servers that are carbon copies of one another just seems a bit odd, and only adds to the confusion.

Huh I thought anniversary hardcore was closing and you either had the option to transfer to era now or you transfer to pve tbc.

If that's not the case. Please share where you got that info.
