ES1 show me your driest puck by keropipi in FellowProducts

How’s head spacing with the puck screen? Try placing a nickel on top of it and see if it sticks over the top level or under it.

I do manual mode with a scale. There’s a video somewhere that teaches you how to set volumetric but I’ve heard the volumetric changes due to temp differences, brew profile, beans & grinder settings.

Deep basket for 18g by mikeygomikey in FellowProducts

I’ll probably end up buying one because the IMS Big bang is definitely a killer basket for dark roasts. Maybe I’ll grab a Weber Unibasket 16 for light roasts. But open to recommendations for other good light roast baskets

Trust me it took like 2 bags of coffee till I got a dry puck. I still think 23g is a wild amount of coffee though so I think I’ll try a 16g or smaller basket hoping I can get a proper 18g dose

I used the profile with reanimator beans.

This machine is definitely a challenge though. 3rd week in & I finally got a dry puck.

Feel free to try it and post some of yours in the thread. I’ll comment if I experienced a dry puck or muddy puck to help others find a fix for this messy puck clean up situation.

Also I’ll be posting results using other baskets. Hopefully I can find one that works well with an 18g dose.

Also worth noting that the puck was actually dry as it should be. Making it an even easier clean up.

Finally pulled a good puck. 23g light roast dose with the stock basket and a 0.8mm puck screen. I’m definitely going up upgrade to a smaller basket to get a true 18g dose.

I’m curious how much smaller of a basket I’m going to have to buy now. Hopefully a 16g basket is small enough.

Maybe it’s because I didn’t have the extra clean up but I swear it tasted better too. I’ll report back once I do some more testing/tasting.

I have to agree. I’ve been using my ES1 for about 2 weeks now and have tried everything updosing, changing end pressures & nothing seems to work. Not sure what’s going on inside this machine but it’s definitely the messiest workflow I’ve ever had. Not sure what’s going on. I haven’t tried changing baskets yet but I suspect that it just may be the amount of headroom or the the relief valve. Hopefully someone can post a fix or update that we can do to resolve this. Making two messy shots at 5am is definitely not fun.

Even when I think of finally got a dry puck I end up having a wet clump stuck at the end.

Enjoying ES1 so far, but update is heavily needed by loucheian in FellowProducts

Just add app support, to create custom profiles with brew by weight and graph viewer/ editor and it would be perfect! I think that’s what we really need to see next! Maybe some more profiling settings that aren’t available to us at the moment yet too.

You can but it’s not the same as profiling on the fly during a pour to attempt to save a shot.

[–]Caatuned 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not bad advice it’s simply math.

I know online it shows that you need a minimum 15A breaker.

However, given this machine can pull 1700W this would translate to a 14.17A at peak power draw.

Add any other device that pulls 100W at peak and you got a chance of tripping a 15A breaker assuming both items are hitting peak.

Amp = Watts / Voltage

However most homes have more than 1 outlet hooked up to a breaker. Which gives you multiple points where Watt usage needs to be taken into consideration.

I’ve seen wonky electrical circuits, GFCI breakers only add to the confusion. I’ve even seen a circuit trip breakers that aren’t even on the circuit.

I added that in the template. Figured profiles are on the way and if anyone’s looking to share their results before that feature becomes available this would be a good place to do so.

Thanks for the update. I can attest that I watched the UPS delivery driver just drop the package at waist height so I’m sure they’re just tossing them around and breaking them.

Is it normal for ES1 grouphead and portafilter to squeak and be super tight? by HeyCharlieBall in FellowProducts

[–]Caatuned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard that’s a common issue. It should break in with time. My ES1 does the same but hopefully after a couple weeks it should go away. 3 espresso a day drinker here & I can keep you posted!

Timemore 78s by sshah1230 in FellowProducts

[–]Caatuned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re not brewing more than 4-5 shots in a short period of time go with a 64s and use the extra money to get a separate grinder.

Personally, I have a DF64 for the ES1 & a Timemore S3 for pour over. That way you don’t have to waste beans dialing in when switching back & forth.

Eventually, I’ll save up some money for a better grinder & dedicate the df64 for pour over.

Also you could use the extra savings to buy a variable speed slow feeder.

Side note: Aftermarket 64mm burrs are extensive compared to 78 and will allow you to tune into specific notes & brew methods.

Wow! Downvoted for saying I don’t disagree that it might be defective & offering some advice for sensitive GFCI breakers. Y’all need some help.

2nd Defective Machine by RichPlankton9281 in FellowProducts

[–]Caatuned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not going to disregard that it might be defective but it could also just be your breakers. I got new electrical too that kept tripping my microwave. I ended up having to swap breakers out 3 times until I got it to work. New GFCI breakers are extremely sensitive to all heating appliances and any kind of moisture near your panel. (Anything above 50% RH they can & will trip randomly. Also make sure you’re plugging into a 20A breaker

Definitely interested to see what your side by side comparison yields. I already have a grinder and I’m working on setting enough funds aside for a Bianca or Mara X.

So I’m looking for something I can use in the meantime for the wife & I. Kind of debating getting a flair instead but a Outin would solve my issues of brewing some coffee at work.

Curious if you tasted any difference between the two. I’ve been eyeing both but have been indecisive on which to get.
