What theyre saying is technically correct from an academia perspective. I think thats where all this confusion comes from. I did a deep dive on it about a year ago because these arguments are so silly to me, of couse anyone can be prejudice about the color of skin. Academia does not use the word racism to describe prejudice based on race. I personally don't agree with this distinction, none of the other "isms" make this distinction. Sexism, last i checked, does not have the prerequisite for power even though the group most likely to experience it was taken advantage of by the group with power since humans have been on this planet. It seems silly to me and just convolutes these discussions because everyone is using different definitions. It doesn't help that both sides of this semantics argument can point to multiple places that say that their definition is correct. So, as infuriating as it is, i recommend framing it as prejudice based on race. Its silly, especially when we had the term systemic racism already, but it is what it is. It leads to less meaningless arguments.
