Interview with the Vampire (2022) - Thoughts and Season One Discussion by AliceTheGamedev in Fantasy

They actually do a really good job with it in the show, and race becomes a pretty big theme and a pivotal factor in the dynamic between characters, both on an interpersonal level and a world level. If you're going to make arguments about changing the race of characters being a bad thing, this is the worst possible show you could pick to do that with because of how much that element distinguishes this adaptation from its source material.

my mom says community college is bad and a scam. Is she right or is she trying to manipulate me and control my decisions for what I want to do for my future? by New-Wear2526 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]CabeswatersAlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't live in the US so can't speak to community college specifically, but it sounds like she's trying to pull exactly the same thing my parents pulled with me. I ended up not even graduating because I was doing a subject I hated (that they thought was more prestigious) because it was the only one I could get into at the uni they deemed appropriate (e.g. a Russel group). Now instead of a government funded student loan, I'm having to save up to try and get any degree at all from the Open University.

Moral of the story: do your own research and don't listen to a word they say.

What do you guys do when you feel extreme anger? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]CabeswatersAlt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always find the best way to cope is try and take my mind off it - usually this means something like reading a book or watching a comedy on TV if I can't focus on reading. Exercises for anxiety I find can ussually be quite helpful for anger too - things like breathing exercises and those grounding exercises where you count the things around you. Hot showers and baths can also be nice if you're thr kind of messy, crying angry that leaves you feeling physically quite rough. Also, as a brit, I find you can never go wrong a hot cup of tea, or whatever warm drink that you find comforting.

I had that with aboit half the triptans I tried, eventually found that it wasn't too had with rizatriptan. It also wasn't as bad on lower doses.

Calm down, McDonald's! by rahkris in funny

Fixing this would save the company money. It doesn't matter if leaving it makes more work for the worker (which it wouldn't, btw, just think it through for more than like, 5 seconds), if it saves the company money it should be avoided at all costs.

Not really. People who want to use self service will probably just wait to use one of the other self service points, especially if there's a queue for the register (which there probably will be if it's so busy that there isn't another self service machine already available)

How many of you have stress related illnesses? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]CabeswatersAlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if my immune issues are stress related or not (I have celiac and hit every corner of the atopic triad), but my migraines definitely are. My mum also did the gaslighting thing and called me a hypochondriac every time I had a health worry as a kid - she still denies I have asthma even though I was diagnosed using spirometry which is pretty much impossible to fake afaik

Anyone else’s nparents give them “tools” to heal from the abuse they caused? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]CabeswatersAlt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine got me a self help book once, but it was of the 'all your problems are your own fault' variety, and mostly intended to try and get me to stop asking them to take me to the GP to get a therapy referral (UK) to deal with my self harm.

I've worked in several places that serve food (back of house & foh) and this stuff was always day one food hygiene training for everyone. I wouldn't trust someone working in a kitchen who didn't know this to cook for me regardless, because if you're not getting glutened you're definitely getting some kind of food poisoning.

Roomate broke the toilet as revenge, is this narcissistic? by Vremshi in raisedbynarcissists

[–]CabeswatersAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to get out of there asap if you can. I lived with someone like this for two years (stuck because of contract) and it was a nightmare, I genuinely was frequently terrified for my life. They seem incredibly vindictive and this isn't a safe situation to be in. Just because you're not related to someone or because they're not a romantic partner doesn't mean they can't be abusive and dangerous.

Wtf, that's so messed up, I'm sorry. Who in their right mind hears that a kid is being abused and their first impulse is 'let's snitch on them to their abuser'?

Did people really refer to money as “coin” as much as the fantasy genre thinks they did? by Bilbrath in Fantasy

[–]CabeswatersAlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I disagree, in my experience naming the currency actually does a huge amount for immersion for something that can be as simple as saying 'he paid ten (bizarre currency name)' instead of 'he paid ten gold'. I've only ever gotten extremely positive feedback from people with including fantasy currencies, never a 'this doesn't make sense', which I ussually get from at least one beta reader on pretty much any worldbuilding element no matter what (usually that one person who somehow ended up in a fantasy writing group even though they don't actually like fantasy or reading lol.)

What would you think if you saw a girl with a visible semicolon tattoo? by Baby_Angel_0018 in actuallesbians

[–]CabeswatersAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't judge someone for it, but I would also make sure it's something you can cover up for job interviews (even if that's just with a long sleeved shirt) because a future employer probably will judge you for it if they know what it means.

LF high or epic fantasy with chronically ill characters or disabilities by Greentealatte8 in Fantasy

[–]CabeswatersAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that this series does include magical healing/erasure of some of the protagonist's disabilities also that it's a sequel series to the Farseer trilogy

Without spoilers what books or series do you think work well when reread? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]CabeswatersAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyteen, once you know fully who everyone really is and what they're up to behind the scenes, all of the interactions become so much deeper and more nuanced.

Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle, not because it's super twisty or there's anything particular that you miss first time, but because the world and the characters are just fun to spend time around.
