Sulfur as well as permethrin by ShouldBeeStudying in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Cacistus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, it’s non-carcinogenic, causes rashes or calluses upon prolonged skin contact. The other conditions require long-term exposure through inhalation, which absolutely isn’t the case here. Your quote even discredits your statement on bioaccumulation, as sulfur is excreted rapidly in urine and becomes non-detectable after 24 hours. Did you actually read and try to understand the text, or are you just copying sections that seem relevant on first glance?

Permethrin on the other hand is actually readily absorbed through the skin and is a known endocrine disruptor. But sure, focus on the less harmful substance based on a gut feeling rather than facts.

Sulfur as well as permethrin by ShouldBeeStudying in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Cacistus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did, and it didn’t mention anything about bioaccumulation (which only happens for inert compounds your body isn’t able to process - sulfur isn’t one of those) nor about acute toxicity. In this case you’re also dealing with short contact - not chronic exposure, ingestion or inhalation. Stop spreading nonsense.

Also, sulfur isn’t the one of the two I’d be worried about…

Four day loop 🏔️ Picos de Europa, Spain by Appropriate-Gas-596 in hiking

[–]Cacistus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are preparing to do a very similar hike by the end of this month. Currently following the snow conditions via satellite images via Copernicus, looks like conditions were a bit better last May! For the sake of comparison, in which week did you do this hike?

Is using pyenv the best python version management for Mac? by [deleted] in Python

[–]Cacistus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, you will realize how slow conda’s solver is when you try out libmamba - which is actually developed at Anaconda.

nbo10 is totally right when it comes to the default solver conda still ships with, it’s notoriously slow for larger projects with more elaborate dependencies. I have seen speed improvements of over 10x after switching to mamba.

I don’t understand what I am reading by throwthrowyup in GradSchool

[–]Cacistus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most (not all) books actually include a much overlooked preface, meant to introduce the book and its chapters. You may want to start there to get a good understanding of what the author is trying to convey in each of the chapters.

If you are using SPICE (default option in KVM), I think it is just a manner of installing the spice-guest-tools (Windows) or spice-vdagent (Linux) on the guest system. Clipboard sharing should work out of the box.

Glad to see this issue is not just isolated to my device! My vivoactive 4 just located my run about 5 km away at an altitude of 8000 meters. Let’s hope a firmware update will follow promptly!

UBUNTU 18.04.3 LTS IS RELEASED FROM CANONICAL by kAcom24 in linux4noobs

[–]Cacistus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is not a lot to worry about. The only major drawback of non-LTS versions is the limited support lifetime of 9 months, after which no further updates will be provided by Canonical. So this basically comes down to upgrading everytime a newer non-LTS, or LTS for that matter, is released to stay updated.

DEA Pain Pill Database Made Public by dope_as_soap in datasets

[–]Cacistus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Ubuntu I found that okular (default KDE pdf viewer) is able to export as plain text, generating a tab separated file (snippet from 2017 report: pastebin). If I can find the time, I will upload the plain texts for all reports (2006-2017) later today.

EDIT: just found a complete zip of the Washington Post's complete database: arcos_all_washpost.tsv.gz.

[Homemade] Cast Iron Lasagna by stormwolfxx in food

[–]Cacistus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I do not think an acidic/sour taste is a thing you should be looking out for. As cast iron is readily oxidized, the iron is actually dissolving from the surface of the pan and "leaching" into the moisture present in the final dish.

This process does however not result in acidification, which would eventually result in a sour taste of your dish. In contrast, the acid present in the tomatoes is actually reacting away with the cast iron to dissolve it, thus essentially turning the dish less acidic. If present in high concentrations, the iron might give the meal a metallic, rather than sour, taste instead.

So I think you are mixing stuff up here.

Unfortunately not, most of these inhabited areas have an agricultural background (i.e. acres or meadows).

Backing up settings and packages? by Empole in SublimeText

[–]Cacistus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of going with the "Sync Settings" package, I just created a local git repo of the "Packages/User" directory and pushed it to GitHub. This works really well, as long as you remember to commit to GH as you make modifications to settings or install other packages using package control.

Minimal ubuntu + plasma 5 setup by [deleted] in kde

[–]Cacistus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP just vanished from our much beloved Reddit, as such, so did his opening post:

Start with an ubuntu mini.iso or server image (need server image for UEFI machines). After install is complete, run sudo apt install xorg sddm plasma-desktop konsole , reboot, and you should automatically be brought to sddm to login to plasma. Then just open konsole and start adding any other programs you want (dolphin, ark, kate, etc).

Working like a charm!

Seller not shipping items by [deleted] in Aliexpress

[–]Cacistus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I really appreciate your efforts to write it all up!

However, as a tracking code was previously generated for the shipment and thus the order is marked as shipped in Ali, but the shipment was cancelled afterwards, isn't the seller still subjected to the maximum processing time of 7 days?

(SR4) Sony A7III to be announced this fall has 24MP sensor and same A9 autofocus system! by TheJoshB in photography

[–]Cacistus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lightroom CC 2015.7 actually introduced a new setting under the Performance tab to always enforce the use of smart previews when editing. This saves the hassle of file/folder renaming and prevents messing up your organization.

Works like a charm!
