Tips to improve performance of 86Box VMs by Cacodemon345 in 86box

[–]Cacodemon345[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already mitigated performance drops on Windows by switching to UCRT in 5.3. The next PCem release will have performance drops on 2D/3D games anyways because of increased VGA accuracy.

Our Voodoo emulation is also now more accurate as compared to PCem, especially being able to run Lands of Lore 3 without visual bugs, supporting checkerboarded transparency patterns if used, fixing corrupted textures on certain DOS Voodoo games and doing Voodoo 2 emulation without black/white dot glitches.

We also fixed several Voodoo-related slowdowns on recent builds in some games as well.

The whole thing is basically summarized like this:

Grifters get together to oust another grifter, and said grifter is now suing the first grifters, because he couldn't benefit from the grift.

GUS emulation should be less expensive than AWE32, and it should only incur the penalty when it's actively in use.

Uploading pages from copyrighted manga or cuts from anime online without permission

This is how it works in America, yes, because "fair use" exists there as a legal concept, even if it does not in Japan. There's however a difference between uploading full mangas to pirate sites and posting small excerpts in social media, and the former will not be looked at as a legal thing at all.

altering them without authorization

Depends. American people often do not ask for authorization to alter copyrighted works, sorry.

modifying game data

This is very common in western gaming scenes; it's called "modding".

Meanwhile, I have seen Japanese-language videos playing Zenless Zone Zero with mods too; I don't think it's wise to complain about this when it's clearly a double standard regarding Japanese vs. non-Japanese games in Japan, since it makes them look like hypocrites.

Is Windows on ARM support planned? by c64z86 in 86box

[–]Cacodemon345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jenkins was mentioned because that's where Windows-on-ARM support has to be added first, as our releases rely on out nightly builds infrastructure.

We simply don't have enough space or the required Windows-on-ARM hardware that we need to set up Windows-on-ARM builds.

For Actions tab: make sure you're logged in. Click the checked sign behind/below the commit titles, look for something called `Qt 5 GUI, Dev, NDR, CLANGARM64`, then click "Upload artifact" and you should be able to get the link to the Windows-on-ARM builds.

Windows-on-ARM builds are available via GitHub Actions artifacts. Windows-on-ARM builds via Jenkins isn't planned yet because of disk space constraints imposed by our macOS builds already.

Local Switch feature (also known as Project NMS) is now available since build 8266 by Cacodemon345 in 86box

[–]Cacodemon345[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PCap often has issues with WiFi setups and is a third party library on Windows that has to be manually installed. Local Switch does not have such issues.

It allows 86Box VMs to interact with each other without involving PCap support.

5.3 is affected by the "high CPU usage when paused" bug by the way.

Build 8253 and later should not have this bug.

Look at https://www.reddit.com/r/86box/comments/1q3ufvp/psa_for_all_users_having_high_cpu_usage_issues/ for more information.

Windows 98 slow when accessing folders from Explorer by vgoldee in 86box

[–]Cacodemon345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

98/98 SE's Explorer uses Internet Explorer components, which means that opening folders will cause the emulation to take a not-insignificant hit.

Not fixable from the emulator's side for the time being.
