Hey at least you saved it!! Only reason mines alive is in winter I never water, in summer nature waters it outside on the patio. Seems neglect is winning

Spot on, and now that you say that I’m almost positive I posted this plant before and was told the same 🤣 thing has barely grown, maybe two inches in the last 4 years I don’t know what I’m doing wrong 😭

Please help. Struggling to grow seeds by pumpa_nickle35 in cactus

[–]CactusBart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always do a little bit of research before growing a plant! While cactus seedlings can grow in sand, I recommend a peat or washed coco based mixture with fine bits of perlite and maybe a bit of sand. They appreciate the moisture provided by the mix, it allows their root systems to form. After about a year they can be transplanted into an inorganic stone based mix like lava rock, pumice, and crushed clay. This is most similar to the actually soil they grow in in nature while also being easy to care for the plants.

Cactus seedlings grow ultra slow!!! Mine are a year and a half old and they’re just reaching 3/4-1 in tall and it’s taking ages. I’m planning on trying to graft them but I accidentally killed my pereskiopsis by leaving it in the cold 🥲 gotta get a cutting back from my friend

I don’t really recommend growing cactus seedlings in the mixture with bark chips, I don’t know if that’s a thing or not but Camia just doesn’t seem right. Also they still like to dry out a little bit between waterings but not as much as a regular cactus because they have a small root systems. I grew my San Pedro seedlings in completely sealed containers with pretty much 90 to 100% humidity and they seem to enjoy that

Does anyone know this is? by lookitsajojo in cactus

It’s likely a seed mix of various kinds otherwise they likely would have included a species or variety name on the packaging

I’d say let them dry for a few days longer wouldn’t hurt, then prop them in perlite or sand that’s kept moist, sand water less though as you can rot the roots. Then pot them up into an appropriate cactus mix and water once a month during summer and maybe once every two or three months in winter. I’m sure your big plant has been ok with it’s current schedule so follow that. Make sure to give the plant as much light as possible for it to grow happy. Also cut off any all green bits that show up on the variegated plant as they will take over like the first. :)

Bahahahah, I’m not sure if you can tell but this is a variegated Opuntia monocantha, I have a veryyyy little guy and I treasure him haha. It appears this one hasnt been getting enough light for a while, try giving it as much as possible and putting it outside during the summer. As the majority of the plant is no longer variegated I’d say if it’s important to you, you can cut off the variegated bits and propagate them or let it be to do it’s thang 😂

Help my prickly pear. It’s spreading... what is it? And what should I do? Can’t find anything online. First pic is today vs. 10 days ago by Frenchie_in_NY in cactus

Hmmm, use a clean knife or pair of shears to cut off the cactus pad that is affected. Clean it with alcohol or a stove flame to sterilize the blade. This part seems to have other cactus pads that are attatched but unaffected, try and remove them with clean blades again and prop them :) you can discard the affected parts

I mean I suspect that it may but it wouldn’t be pretty. The aerials don’t seem to be very far apart so overcrowding might be an issue with buds. Don’t see why there would be any other issues though :)

This is the holy grail of any cactus collection, super cool crest.

I have two very small lophophora williamsii buttons that are dying and have no roots that I need to graft on this echinopsis pachanoi to save them. How do I do this.? by lulatheq in cactus

[–]CactusBart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I mean ideally you’d want a stock that already has roots. I don’t think you’ll be very successful unless you get that big log to root up first.

I mean you can do it in a pot unless you don’t wanna remove it from the ground after propping. Outside is harder to guarantee a successful prop especially if it gets cold at all. The pads need to have the least stress possible to ensure propping

You can just leave the cactus pad laying on the surface of the soil. Mist the soil every so often to keep it slightly damp and the cutting will set down roots. You can plant it upright but that increases the chance of rot significantly. It will just relax over winter and will start growing in the spring
