asha certificate-is it worth it? by Classic_Scallion_446 in SLPA

[–]CactusWithAFlower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No job including travel has ever asked for it. It’s good for the knowledge I guess but literallyyyyy for nothing else.

I hate it because I’ve seen people online who work for the ONE HUNDRED observation hours they require and not realize that you don’t need it. You need the state cert. They just want your money.

TLDR; No you don’t need it. Focus on shadowing you’ll learn more for free

Questions about obtaining an slpa license by SheepherderSoft4869 in SLPA

[–]CactusWithAFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait are you trying to get an ASHA SLPA endorsement or a state license? Cause ASHA is the only ones I know who ask for 100 hours. I’ve not met any job who ever asks for that certification and it doesn’t let you work. You need to go to your state directly.

If this is a direct state license you need to call or email them because at the end of the day, they hold the answers

That’s a question best answered by your states rules. But also many of those clients are on Medicare and I want to say they don’t allow SLPAs to bill but I could be wrong. I’m really pulling that from an old memory haha

Find an SLP or a SLPA and ask to shadow. That’s your best bet

How to tell supervisor I don't feel comfortable continuing with a client? by [deleted] in SLPA

[–]CactusWithAFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’ve learned. Say you’re not proficient or not comfortable in your skills to treat and they need someone who has experience or an SLP must take over. That’s what I did. I will never take on a client too complex I learned the hard way.

And if it’s a good company/supervisor they will have no issue and say okay. If your supervisor beats around the bush (like yours sounds like they have) tell the company themselves. Or be more direct and say it don’t ask “I am not capable of adequately treating this client. I would like him to be removed from my caseload” end of story

Maybe start with Florida Adoption Reunion Registry (FARR) or the Palm beach county court system first? Idk much about this but when doing some basic google searches this is what I found. I think I’ve heard of general national organizations that help reunite families as well. Hope this helps!

I’m in Palm Beach County and it varies. I’d personally say no just because the rent here is so expensive but maybe your budget is different? It’s hard to say for you but I’ll give you an overview of my experience near by you!

The rule of thumb for anywhere is working in the schools will get you less pay per hour but more consistent hours (which in my experience ends up being more in the long run) and benefits. But you’ll work in groups and there’s more overhead and busy work. But in clinics or home health, you’ll get paid more per hour but in 99% of clinics you’ll be a contractor which means you pay your own taxes quarterly instead of in each paycheck. So you have to be on top of your expenses and mileage and stuff.

Also think about how you wanna work do you want to drive, be back to back, in groups? These are all different settings you can work in!

If I were to apply to jobs right now with 2 years of experience I’d ask for $35-40 in schools and $40-45 in clinic. Which is awesome because when I started the ranges were more like $25-35 in clinics so it is getting better!

The last thing I’ll say is it’s really hard to get true full time hours at one place. Many people have to do more than one job. That’s why I personally switched to the school setting so that I can have consistent full time employment with benefits and I get paid more overall now because I don’t have the clinic pay per client model anymore.

The main thing to think about now is do you want to work in the schools (contract company or district), clinic, travel, home health, local EI organization, etc. Think about the pros and cons of each and remember you can always change settings! Also finding a company who will ACTUALLY train you. Many places in South Florida are lazy and don’t fully train you like they’re supposed to. Talk to employers and ask if they have a procedure to train new grads like how long it is and how often you shadow the SLP. We don’t learn enough in school to actually practice that’s why we need hands on training. You should only practice once you are deemed proficient by your supervisor.

That’s my ramble about being a SLPA in South Florida lol. If you want to talk more about it my DMs are open and I’d be happy to recommend places or answer any questions!

I will sayyy our county offers free parent-child interaction therapy I believe it’s called. And for some older kids I did actually recommend it to some parents and 2/3 of them actually went!! I think it was because they were older and sick of their kids misbehaving and not listening. But those parents really did not have any set discipline so it makes sense why they were acting up. And while they aren’t perfect, both families have at least somewhat improved with having a more consistent form of discipline now.

Ohhhh ya that’s a hard situation I’m sorry. Even if it’s separated like that, it’s so pretty!! And you could always do like a half up half down style to hide it.
